My instructor discovered it, asked who was running that lathe, and told me "If you ever do that again, I will bury this t-handle in your ass and drop you." I never did THAT again. lol

Im a machinist too and here is my two cents... had that been in reverse, kiss your shin good bye and luckily it was at the slowest rpm. First off it is a "engine lathe", machinist use it to cut metal. I just want to say thanks to the "idiot" and his friends for filming/posting this little video. I am a machinist instructor and have not had much luck finding videos to demonstrate what these machines can do to a person. Should you happen to still be alive, could I request that you take on a milling machine, drill press, bandsaw next.

If the gap hadn't been there he would have likely been unharmed. The chuck key would have jammed against the bed or popped out instead coming back around and hooking on to his foot. Regardless, whether you're using a lathe or a power drill you NEVER start it with the key still in the chuck.
It really begs the question what he was expecting to happen / what he was trying to achieve. I mean, it's not like these things aren't rated at several horsepower...
I have seen the aftermath first hand, found a friend with his arm torn off, he died 4 days later in the hospital. Stupid to even think he had a chance.

Im a machinist too and here is my two cents... had that been in reverse, kiss your shin good bye and luckily it was at the slowest rpm. Had it been higher like 300 plus, Im sure the ending would not include kids laughing. Oh and how lucky that the jaws were closed and not opened enough to catch the jeans!

First off it is a "engine lathe", machinist use it to cut metal. I just want to say thanks to the "idiot" and his friends for filming/posting this little video. I am a machinist instructor and have not had much luck finding videos to demonstrate what these machines can do to a person. Should you happen to still be alive, could I request that you take on a milling machine, drill press, bandsaw next.

@FrozenInCND If you're a machinist, you should have noticed that the "machine" didn't cause this. The asshat behind him pressed the start button on purpose. He was smiling as he did it and then everyone laughed, like it was a big joke.
The joke will be on the company if the dude is injured and decides to sue. And the dimwit who pressed the button should have been fired on the spot.

@FrozenInCND Well said. I only realized after watching this three times that he was pretty much having an intentional tug of war with the machine. Initially I thought he was trying to free a stuck key and the machine turned on "somehow."
Let's try to win strength contests against machinery...what could go wrong?

If the gap hadn't been there he would have likely been unharmed. The chuck key would have jammed against the bed or popped out instead coming back around and hooking on to his foot. Regardless, whether you're using a lathe or a power drill you NEVER start it with the key still in the chuck.

Not a wood lathe, machinist lathe. That gap between the gearbox and the lathe bed saved him from worse than what he had received.

I have seen the aftermath first hand, found a friend with his arm torn off, he died 4 days later in the hospital. Stupid to even think he had a chance.
