It's so incredible seeing the two Americans win again! It's great seeing Paul's high bar routine and Carly's floor juxtaposed. Those are two fantastic routines. If Carly had been in the floor final, she could have medaled.

not only were his last two events so strong, but Kim De Jung's parallel bars were overscored. Yes it was a very nice but it is an automatic deduction for repetition that the judges didn't take. He did the same move three times which in that scoring system should have called for at least a five tenth deduction

He won from a guy who did magnificent in ALL of his excercises ( 6 ) yet still it is Impossible he could have won, and he knew. Of course he was the world champion, did you see his routines for that championship ?

I was so surprise when Paul Hamm won the gold, I didn't expect him to earn gold, I thought he would at least won the silver. If my sister wasn't there I would have fallen off my seat.

it remains one of the WORST examples of Gymnastics being a sport depending on Judges, no way Paul Hamm could have been #1 after his vault, and he even knew.

He barely won and he was the current world champion. And unlike the woman, the men has more events to comeback on since they have six and woman have four. Also the last two events are Paul's strongest ones.

Why must EVERY successful female gymnast be compared to Mary Lou?

For the same reason every Romanian gymnast is compared to Nadia; much in the same way she popularized the sport in her country, Mary Lou Retton popularized it in the US. Being named alongside her - like Carly and Nastia - is the highest compliment.

That's a very good point. MLR was lucky Soviet boycotted the Olympics in ´84. Anyway, her vault was great.

WAS being the operative word. It's that she was the FIRST in the US to do it. It's silly to compare them.  They stand alongside each other in the history of gymnastics, but they shouldn't be compared.

Paul's comeback at those Olympics was incredible. His reaction really is priceless. I love that he didn't realize he had gold, and even when they were screaming it at him, he wouldn't believe them. Ah, I remember watching that like it was yesterday...

Great, great moment. Paul Hamm is amazing. I really wish he could've come to Beijing...

i remember watching that olympics!!!!!!! carly used to be on my gymnastics team b4 she even went to train in texas. my parents used to talk to her parents in the lobby. when we saw carly win we all cried! wow!!!!!!! i'm so proud of her.

Sorry, but I think Carly was just standard, but nothing amazing. Do you want to see amazing performances? Take a look back to 1988: Chouchounova and Silivas. OMG, those WERE unbelievable and we're talking about 16 years ago... shouldn't they have been overpassed already? Yeah, but no, they haven't been even equalized.

Agree, Carly was good and totaly deserved, but she's no Silivas or Chouchounova. Not that it matters, in fact. On the other, they are getting more and more technical and not so amazing today then ever before.

Finding out they've won is the best part here, imo. Carly's is great; she starts crying. Marta is absolutely hilarious. Paul's is just amazing; no one ever thought he'd clinch the gold!

i know, you spend your life training for that moment. you work and work and get that close and then its gone just by a few points. paul worked just as hard but... the thing with china is that the children (if they are serious about gymnastics) are taken from there home to train. its like a bording school. thats sad. then when you loose you know you've got to wait another 4 yrs. his body could fall apart by that time. u know? sad.
