I don't see that it really matters who has control of the last dregs of oil. Why should we risk so much terror and war over something that will last a few decades at best?
Sooner or later there will be no more oil, at all. We will have to get used to it at some point. What difference does a few years make if we're not preparing for the inevitable anyway?
@anatoriac -- What difference will a few years make if we're not preparing for the inevitable anyway?
Actually, according to our own Department of Energy, a few years might make more difference than you think. Learn about the Hirsch Report (published in 2005)...it says that if we start preparing for the decline of oil at least ten years before the world hits the Hubbert Peak (the point of decreasing production), the impact of the transition would be reduced.
"...if we start preparing for the decline of oil..."
But we're not! If we were to actually DO something then yes, we'd need time. And a few years would make a difference. But if we're not doing anything about it anyway, it doesn't really matter whether the collapse happens in 10 years, or tomorrow.
@anatoriac -- You're quite right in that respect. We're not doing anything, despite the fact that people in our own government have said that we need to...and as long as we insist on doing nothing, the effects will be the same whether the planet reaches the Hubbert Peak tomorrow or ten years from now. The savage irony is that the people in corporate American who are refusing to make changes for fear that it will cost them money are ignoring the fact that they'll lose everything if they don't.
Note to future self: Watch 2012 and laugh on new years day, 2013. Watch this on new years day 2017 before going out and driving like I've sat on a wasp.
Would like to walk to work but our transportation system is run on cars which is making it difficult to reach places to just walk and our public transportation is slow as hell I like it when you can reach places on foot like asia
It won't be surprising if the US goes to war with Venezuela or some other oil nation using the "war against terror" quote. Being a world super power i wonder how far the US will go to have the most oil.
only the Americans get all wound up about it you stupid idiots need to grow up. And stop consuming over double o what every other country consumes per person
What is being put into question is the whole economic model which is based on ever increasing production and consumption. This is the wall that is being hit. My guess is that maybe 50% of trucks on the road are delivering non-essential goods and this will quickly come to a stop when mother nature steps in: 'OK children. Party's over'
The remarkable thing about that list of product made from oil is that most of them can be made from the hemp plant. Funny how the hemp plant is still illegal in the USA. Maybe because big oil owns Washington DC and big oil does not want the competition from hemp.
@chadberry75 Oh yeah, hemp oil can be used to make plastics and it is a non-toxic process and the end product is healthy compost. Just google hemp plastics or check it out on wikipedia. I was surpised when I first learned about it too.
It's not just our cars that would be S.O.L. Most plastics that we use in our daily lives are made from oil derivatives. Maybe more of us should've studied to be Chem-E majors.
@MopDMTBARTL There is nothing like oil in this world, nothing. For the modern world its like a type of "holy water" in a way. Nothing else can match it through its versatile applications. Even if we don't need it, its too irrestible for people to ignore for long.
I agree. I have a good paying job, but I don't mind taking public transit sometimes, even when I have my own car. I drive a Corolla so gas is actually cheaper than public transit. I do want to live closer to work so I could walk or bike instead :)
Huh, obvious mistake, Johns Chevrolet is not Diesel powered, so why the fuck did he want to store up Diesel? Hmmm, unresearched English interpretation of the US, the whole thing was filmed in the UK on a budget of $50. Good job it was not that shitty Duramax engine anyway, it would have overheated and seized up.
Too late to turn this off now, but JFC, this is utter shit.
4:22, when I came to USA in 1988 from Taiwan. I am so surprised American live their life horizontally. I can't f**king understand why all the retail stores such as Wal-mart and Targets are all 1 floor. The parking lots are gigantic enough to hold a football game. I never understand the reason. Is it because the building code? or a conspiracy by auto and oil companies that we have to live this way?
I'm hoping that regular radio with annoying DJ's will at least be a thing of the past by 2016! Hopefully cars will be fully intergrated with computer systems that will give you all the information you will need on demand.
The world has been LIED to by the oil companies. The oil companies own,or control most of the patents for alternative fuels.Ask yourselves why, when a man designed a car, than ran 2oo miles on 4 ounces of water, when he made it public,he died a very sutton death, with many questions as to what killed him.
@b2flyer1 Because it's not true. Simple as. Water is a very stable chemical, it can not be used as a chemical energy source. End of. If you wanna disagree, we all look forward to you scientific paper that has completely disproved the laws of thermodynamics.
@Xandergy : B.S. the controlled media, show the sheepal public, the truth they want the sheepal public to know..TRUE,,no paper NEEDED,to prove, the Japanese,DO have a car that runs on water..
@b2flyer1 Although I think we probably agree on the poor quality of reporting in America, I would point out that some media outlets have run with this story, not that it lends in any credence. You see, chemically water is very stable, that is why there is so much of it on the Earth. It's the same reason Nitrogen makes up most of the atmosphere, the N2 bond is extremely strong and thus stable. There is energy in water, but it is released when H2 and O2 bond forming an exothermic reaction.
@fairyheli2 We are!.. Slowly. People started to demand more fuel efficient cars during the fuel shortage a few years ago. In LA Vespa sales exploded. My family just sold their minivan which got 14 mpg and got a Ford Fiesta which gets over 40. I walk to work. Just wait until another gas crisis. People will change when they're forced to.
need fuel?? biomass is the future, along with nuclear for electricity. also Americans: please stop driving HUGE cars like SUV's, try microcars and mopeds that do 70mpg+ instead of big cars that do 7mpg+
@shaolinadr The Japanese attacked the US because we cut off their oil supply. There were other reasons for the wars, Korea and Vietnam were containment, but still, don't overgeneralize history.
yeh but if germnay was to be great she need energy tht was one of the main reason for i vading russia , a natural country with all the resources u need to build an empire

@shaolinadr hahahaha! wow... take your own advice and dont make comments about things you dont understand, you just make yourself look like a complete idiot lol
@shaolinadr What do you call Hitler's obsession with the Caucasus oil fields, the Anglo-American involvement in Iran, and so on? Every war is about resources, energy among them...and while it might not not have been about oil, oil certainly drove the conflict. Hitler wanted autarky -- economic autonomy, and that was impossible without controlling more oil.
Why not have a trailer on the back of a bicycle. This requires hardly any oil and is much more efficient then pushing a shopping cart. See there are things we can do that are not as bad as people think. We should cut our use of unnecessary car trips NOW!
Maybe its just me, but bicycle use has grown in London, and in Europe, while oil is used in many things its primary use is transport. Things would be not so bad if people choose to bike more often.
@CyberAthletethefirst Transport fuel can also be deasil. The biggest sole use of oil is for fuel for vehicles. We can make the remaining oil go much further if we ride bicycles when we dont really need to drive. Besides, think of the health benefits and reduced pollution.
