LMFAO @ mince pie in the eye lol lol. Ive just watched the movie (again) and this is so close in so many ways regarding the characters, the accents, the set, the costumes and the speech patterns. Brilliant!
First watched this in 2000 when it aired. I was 16, and I'd never seen Brief Encounter. But I roared with laughter. The mark of a great parodist (French and Saunders can do this too) is that you can 'get it' even if you're not familiar with the source.
I was finally compelled, at 27, to watch Brief Encounter for the first time (a fantastic film, btw). Now I marvel at V's talent: she perfectly respects and recreates the tone of the film, and makes it funny. It's complete genius.
If one can disregard the crudeness that Victoria often displays in her parodies, her humour can seem somewhat refreshing and entertaining. If she could disassociate herself from the flow of her colleagues who seem to rejoice in crudeness and perversity, she might be on to a good thing. Her education and acquistion of things beyond normalcy, might then be put to better effect.
@avuncular300 and thats Miss Wood I'll have you know, not Victoria. Dont be so famiar, dont you know theres a war on. I think that you have missed the point of this suberb, intellectual and clever parody my friend, and try running comments through a grammar check as they do not 'scan' at all. Hope this helps. A tin of Orange Pekoe I keep for the middle classes, sheer genius.
Aw that was hilarious!!! Brief Encounter is my favourite film and this is the first parody I've seen - too funny!!! Their voices and mannerisms are so spot on! Well cast too! - WOW!
This is fantastic... The more times I watch this, the more hilarious lines I find. The mincepie bit is so so hilarious. The original is one of the best-written scripts ever. So moving. Check out the movie.
If you like this you must type in Harry Enfield Norbert Smith and find his own parody. It'sa mock documentary of a hack English actor. The version of Hamlet as rewritten by Noel Coward is also good value. Thanks for posting, I love Victoria Wood but I hadn't seen this.
It is so evocative of those days if you were living in the South. Beautifully-written. Nowadays, of course, they just woulda gone off & had a sh*g, but it was all "forbidden love" in those days. Wonderful film.
@bootsamou I agree- I'm not a big fan of romantic movies, but I really like Brief Encounter. The last 5 minutes are so heart wrenching, that they didnt get to even say goodbye to one another. And not because of a cataclysmic event, but just because the wrong person arrived at the wrong time- felt very realistic, to me, at least/ and I was born in the 80's!
About 20 years ago, I think. It was a sketch show called "Victoria Wood on TV". There's another great parody of Brief Encounter by Harry Enfield. Look for "Norbert Smith - A Life Part 5" in Related Videos.
I didn't think I'd like that, being such a huge fan of Brief Encounter, but I thought it was quite funny, and I particulary liked Michael Parkinson! That was a part he was born to play! haha
Not Michael Parkinson, but the ever-superb Duncan Preston playing Stanley Holloway in the original film of Brief Encounter. DP plays him as "standard yorkshireman 628B", for which read "Michael Parkinson".
This is one of the GREAT parodies of classic cinema. The whole feel of thew film is absolutely 100%
Watched this several times now ~ the mince pie bit still has me absolutely wetting myself ~ and I keep finding new things like "Shall I hit you over the head with a carp?". Brilliant.
