@angelmon6 Usually are in fine dirt or loose sand. They create what looks like a crater with them at the bottom, with their big jaws pointed up. When an ant or naything (I've set them off with a twig or stran of hair) they start digging the dirt out from under the ant so that he sinks looking like going down into quicksand until its grabbed and pulled on down.

These are absolutely the most awesome insects ever. Went to Pres'quile Provoncial Park and saw them there for my first time.. I spent hours feeding them. Just so everyone knows, and Ant Lion is a part of a growth stage for a dragon Fly. They are actually an Ant Lion for 5-6 years before they become a dragon fly which then, only live for 3-4 weeks, long enough to relay eggs. They can be found anywhere where there is dragon flys, sand and ant hills. VERY ADDICTING to feed!

@midrange18: Actually they are not DragonFly larva but belong to a group of insects know as Myrmeleontidae. There's about 2000 different species of "Ant Lion" and the adults do resemble Dragonflies or Damselflies however they are completely different insects. The larval stage can also last approximately 3 years in most species though I won't rule out that some could last as long as 5-6 simply because it is the food supply that generally determines the length of the larval stage.

Antlions are easy to keep. Get you a small tub and put clean sand in it. Then catch you some antlions down at the barn. You can feed and watch them build their pits. Then feed them ants. We used to do it in 3rd grade class.
