I'm of the belief that protesting against something, anything is actually a developmental phase people go through on the tail end of puberty. It doesn't really matter what it is they are protesting against, or even if they know. It's a bit like acne, body odour and dodgy facial hair. Thankfully most people grow out of it.

The police operation for this protest was called 'Glen Coe' - named after a place in the Scottish highlands. If you look up the history of Glen Coe, you'll see that English soldiers committed a massacre there - so why was the operation named as it was? Did the police plan to use violence against the crowd from the very start? It's certainly a strange name to use - is there a link?

Eye witness reports noted that it was in fact protesters that administered first aid to Ian Tomlinson.

With comments from senior officers like "summer of rage" and they are "up for it" created a hostile situation. There was little damage, and yet the police blocked people in and attacked. This is not the fault of this officer, it is the leadership.
I'll keep my eye out for the next demo and go for support. we need to stand united against oppression and the betrayal of this country.

FreezingFlame, the problem I suspect is that sometimes people quite desperately WANT to believe, so they will selectively disregard evidence. I wonder if it represents an extreme of some aspect of human nature common to us all, normal healthy cynicism taken to an illogical extreme, or rather something aberrant but established as a sub culture, paranoia as a meme. However that is obviously not the case and most likely not one of those protesting have any valid issue, rather just the urge to protest about something, nor could many hope to run a country. How can anyone have possibly thought that it would remain peaceful? Seemingly every summit exactly the same thing happens with boring predictability. Of course there was going to be violence or at least the likelihood. Once it starts the police have to contain it. They cannot deal with individuals when faced with a mob. Frankly the cases of "brutality" I've seen amount to textbook professionalism and restraint complained about by people who think freedom of speech knows no bounds.
