I ordered this guitar from Musicians Friend (Vintage Sunburst) and I was thinking about getting some Setmour Duncan Alnico-II Pros (Slash's pickups) because I really LOVE the tone and the whole "uncovered" look. Then I was gonna put the original pickups in my other Epiphone Les Paul (Studio Deluxe). What do you think?
@RolfGuitar Sounds good to me. Depending on what style of guitar you play, those stock Epiphone pickups are not bad. I just like a little bit smoother top end, a little more buttery midrange and a solid bass response. Epiphone is trying to produce a middle of the road pickup that roughly pleases everybody. Check out the stock set first, then decide what's lacking tone wise. Different pickups will get you there. Don't worry about the guitar, the construction is solid in my opinion.
Sup dude, it's been a while. Just a little update, i went with a scotch bride pad on my neck and it put such fine scratches in the neck that it feels amazing now, perfect satin feel! So thanks so much for that advice man, now another question. Do you prefer the look of the trapezoid inlays? Or the look of block inlays? (usually the block inlays include the 1st fret) I'm changing the inlays on my les paul, and i ordered both trapezoid and block, but Im not sure which to go with. Opinion?
@koofdome It really depends on what looks good to you. Who am I to tell you, hahaha! If you dig the whole vintage vibe, then go trapezoid. But if you're more into a more modern look, then block is cool too. I'm guessing right now you have dot inlay or something? Why change out?,....unless you want inlays that look more aged than the pure white pearloid look.
@Stewmade64 BTW, I'm glad that neck worked for you. It's so simple and easy to do. And when your hand eventually polishes out that dull neck from playing alot, all you do is repeat the process. Soooooooo much easier than refinishing satin. You just did the same but with old school methods.
@EssentalFx No difference, just the plus has a nice flame top maple instead of the plain wood top that's on the standard plain top. No tone difference at all. The plus top looks higher quality to me. It's just more visually pleasing. The tone will be there, just pick the one that looks best to you.
@EssentalFx Initially, no. It's not the tuners, it's the string nut. Do the first inexpensive thing, and rub a graphite pencil over the top of the of the nut, allowing pencil lead dust to drop into each string slot. Make sure there is enough pencil lead dust in each slot. This will allow a smooth glide within the slot, allowing the strings to move when tuned and not get caught within the nut. THAT'S what's causing your tuning problem. Wipe the lead residue off the nut and re-string.
@Stewmade64 If that doesn't work, you'll need to take the guitar into a local guitar repair shop if you can, and have them take a couple swipes through each string slot with a nut file. Epiphone is known for not cutting their string slots clean within the nut. The tuners are Grovers. Every famous guitar player during the 70's swapped out their stock tuners and installed Grovers. A lot of people think that the guitar is not holding it's tuning because of faulty tuners. Not true....
@Stewmade64 Here's what happens: you tune up to pitch perfectly. You start playing and after the first few string bends, you now notice that you're guitar is out of tune. You've tried everything, stretching out your strings, making sure you made the proper amount of turns around each tuning post (3-4 btw), all the slack has been taken out, and still tuning problems. Bending the string releases the tension that's catching the string at the nut. Clear the pinch & lube, problem solved.
My only experience is that the Chinese made one I got doesn't sound anywhere near as good as my friends guitar which is the same make and model and was made in Korea.
However, his is a model from the 90s, and mine was brand new in 2010.
You can probably pick up a better sounding 2nd hand guitar of this kind.
If you have the money, get a Gibson LP Studio, sounds a good bit better but not that much more expensive.
holy shit u maniac u beat the hell out of that guitar!!! thats awesome!!! i have same guitar with alnico pro 2 pickups and different toggle switch cuz the factory one was noisy and didnt always work. thinking of switching tone caps do u have any suggestions? i play mainly 80s and 90s stuff... GnR mostly... anyways, i know tone caps make a big difference if u get the right ones, but i have no idea which to get and know nothing about them. nice playing bro...very nice!!!
@6stringzstrummin Hey thanks. You're going to choke on the price but they are well worth the investment. Luxe capacitors which are offered by Acme Guitar Works.com. I wanted a late 50's Les Paul tone which is what all the great Les Paul Rock players play. Buy the 2 Bumble Bee '57-'58 caps (both .022 mfd.) These will make your Alnico II pickups sing. The Antiquities on my LP are basically those same pickups (both have Alnico II magnets like Slashes LP.)
@themrrd12345 Call me crazy, but mine was just fine coming straight from MF in a cardboard box. It's not like I'm shopping for a Gibson or Fender Custom Shop guitar. The only thing that happened to me was the the first one was sent with the headstock cracked at the angle behind the nut. Sent it back, MF sent a replacement ASAP. No problems. Plus I'm able to do my own adjustments and setups. I'm not afraid of truss rods and intonation adjustments. I get what you mean though.
@rrgert4 Mmmmm, not completely true. It's my understanding that the pots are different, BUT!!!.....it is a Switchcraft toggle switch (same that Gibson uses) and Classic 57's (which Gibson uses too.)
@AssassinsCreed515 Okay, if you want the whole vintage look of the nickel covers but not aged, go with the Seymour Duncan Seth Lover humbuckers. A bit pricey but gets you there for tone. The Antiquity and Seth Lovers are identical pickups, just a bit more for the aged process of the covers. But, if you like the cover removed look, go for SD Alnico II Pro pickups. That should cover everything.
Alright, so synthetic wool, just keep rubbing until you get down to about the wood? Will this take off the black color of the neck? sorry i ask alot of questions.... this is really sketchy stuff to be doing to my baby
@koofdome NO! Don't stop at the wood. Just dull the surface. That will get you that "satin" finish you want without disturbing the finish color or overall appearance. You just want the neck dull (non-reflective), right? Wait, is your Les Paul black? I thought for some reason it was honeyburst.
@Stewmade64 No i dont have a honeyburst, thats what i WANT. Right now, my les paul is the Epiphone Les Paul 100 in Vintage Sunburst (see my video) it has a black neck. If you check out this video called "Les Paul Studio Renovation Part 8" by a guy named sully, he seems VERY professional, check out that video please and see if he is doing the right thing please?
@koofdome Hmmm, not a big fan of that cabinet scraper but hey, everybody likes to use what's comfortable to them. Personally, I think the cabinet scraper removes too much finish. Plus I'm worried about the scraper not removing in a uniform manner, affecting the neck shape. Am I confused here? I thought you wanted a satin finish rather than remove the finish to bare wood. Which is it?
@Stewmade64 Gahhhh i dont even know anymore.... i want a satin neck but then the natural wood with a gun stock oil seal gives it a nice look. I want satin though i think, the thing is, i dont know how to get satin while still removing the glossy poly but still KEEP the black paint on my neck uno?
@koofdome With the Scotch-Brite type synthetic wool, you will get a smooth satin finish while still keeping the black on the back of the neck. There are three layers of finish on that neck: Sealer over wood (thick clear color), Black urethane, then clear coat urethane (also thick and clear.) All you'll be doing is dulling the top clear coat layer. That's the stuff that that guy was scraping off the neck. It won't take long to dull it down. In 5 minutes it should be dull to your liking.
And btw, i own a Line 6 Spider 3 and i regret alot for buying it. So digital, so ... not variable sound, so limited sounds coming from that crappy amp. I also have a Yamaha F-20 which is such a good amp, i dont know why Yamaha quitted the amp business. I can say that sometimes it sounds like a valve amp, although it uses transistors, im serious about this :))
i wasnt able to fully explore its sound opportunities, since the guy who was the owner of the paula was in a hurry and...I want to play mainly funk, ska, blues, jazz, some metal, punk...I wanna know how the stock, factory made, with no modificiations can handle mainly ska and funk, can i get that high end trebley warm tone from it? I know that you understand me what i mean :)))
@orfmor You mean the middle position on the Les Paul right? I LOVE that pickup position, BUT you need the right pickups to get THAT TONE. Crap, it's been so long since I've played that guitar with stock pickups I just don't remember. I don't remember thinking that it could not cover all that you mentioned.
My impression for this guitar, from all the videos i've seen on youtube is that its muddy and dirty...not the case in 10% of the videos where the guitar sounds excellent, solid, not that bassy...But how this guitar actually sounds in real? Can you get the good tone out of it if you dont have a valve amp, using transistor-solid amp? Can you make it sound good if you have a good experience in setting amps? I cant find this guitar in my town and check her out and see how she really actually sounds.
@orfmor Good point. Type of mic in camera being used in filming examples, crappy pedals which affect the tone, playing to loud that it distorts levels while recording, solid state good or bad, tube amp too small or too large, all change the tone. All I can say is that in person while recording this, the sound is fuller but not bassy. Very warm sounding. Solid state like a Line 6 or Crate may sound a bit sterile and bland. But my ears like warmer classic rock tones more than Atreyu tones.
@Stewmade64 Thanks alot, this is the first reply i've received on youtube, after asking a question and its so full, with good backrounded explanation. I bet half of those "Lespaulers" are children which have just bought it and they use crappy full gain distortions and max-ed trebles and so on...And yes, i totally agree, all these things u've mentioned affect the tone, in some way. Idk, i really like the look and feel of the guitar, i've once infact played one for a minute or two, but
@orfmor Unless you plan on purchasing another amp, I'd bring your amp down to the guitar place that sells the Epi Les Paul and try it through your amp.....even better, your setup if it's not such a hassle dragging your favorite crunch pedal along too. Play when the store isn't blaring fucking Sammy Hagar shit in the store so that you can hear what your playing....or worse that kid who keeps constantly playing the intro to "My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit. GEE-zus! Alright already!!!! hahaha.
Absolutely, it's a decent value for money guitar, I paid $900AUD for mine brand new and if I had stopped to $1500 (which I recently did) I could have just got a Gibson Les Paul Studio then and I reckon they are worlds apart, I know $600 is a lot of cash.
It's a good value for money guitar and a very good entry level guitar if you are pretty well off. Seen a lot of bands playing live with this too and it sounds good, just needs a good amp.
I still can't stop watching this video and just looking at how beautiful that color is..... I really want a satin neck though, and it DOES NOT COME IN HONEYBURST!!! I really wonder what a plain top honeyburst would look like. I'm trying to find as close as a look as jimmy page's lp
@koofdome I think you'd be disappointed in the plain top. Page has played flame topped faded cherry sunburst Les Pauls before (faded to look honeyburst.) What's with your Jimmy Page quest? He's your grandparents age and he doesn't have the chops anymore. Listen more to Derek Trucks, Andy Wood, or even Paul Gilbert. Plus playing a guitar slung down to your knees will kill your back when you hit your 30's. Don't mind me, just giving you a hard time. =)
@Stewmade64 Well the thing is, jimmy page is literally the person who made me want to play guitar. He's amazing man, and I'm tryin real hard to meet him before the old man dies, which hopefully wont be long. I'm just looking for a satin neck on a Les Paul in honeyburst. I was thinking plain top cuz in some pics, his guitar looks boxy and flat, and plain and very worn. Plus top looks too modern and stuff.
@koofdome I get it. Well, good luck finding a satin necked Epi Les Paul Standard. If I were you, do it old school by taking a Scotch-Brite pad and dull the back of the neck with that. That's what we all did in the 70's bro. There is so much polyurethane finish on that neck that it would take you about 6 re-scuffs to get into the bare wood of that neck. That should work.
@Stewmade64 Ya I have bad news, I went through with calling epiphone and they got back to me and can't get me a custom Epi LP standard in honeyburst with a satin neck.... All i want is a epi les paul with a satin neck, but in that color....oh well. I'm gonna go with this guitar and do my own satin finish to it. Have you heard about using 0000 steel wool? I'm not sure, im scared to do it, and my guitar tech said sorry dude, but i wont touch that stuff on a guitar that isn't mine....dammit..
@koofdome Don't use steel wool! Only people who know what they are doing use that stuff. Go get the stuff that they put on the back of sponges to scrub pots and pans. Hardware stores carry the synthetic wool called Scotch-Brite by 3M. It's safe to you and won't get picked up by your magnetic pickups like steel wool. Green is aggressive while the brown color is conservative (I'd pick brown.) You can't screw up. Scuff the area you want and wipe off residue. Plenty of finish to not ruin.
@Stewmade64 great advise man. the steel wool i know is some dangerous stuff, get it in your pickups, screwed. Try to wipe it off the body from flakes that come off, screwed with scratches. I was thinking maybe 800 sandpaper then moving to even 2000?? I dont know... i dont want to get to the bare wood, then ill get splinters and stuff haha. I just want a satin neck like on the Epi Traditional Pro. But im pretty sure its a kind of seal or paint over the bare wood
@koofdome Sorry I meant grey synthetic wool. Brown is more aggressive than the green. I think you'll be fine. That urethane finish on those guitars is so thick, you'd have to go to town on that thing with 100 grit to get to the wood that fast. Use the same amount of pressure you'd use to lightly remove wax from polishing the guitar. Moving to 2000 will end up polishing the finish back to gloss. Sandpaper removes too much finish. Synthetic wool has more control over your desired effect.
@Stewmade64 Oh, and check out my channel, for some reason i cant post a link to my video, but its a video of me showing off my current Les Paul with all the custom work i did to it that i'v been talkin about.
@XXXGarfield My own. I order my own specs through Steve Clayton. They are heavy gauge. Heavies strengthened my wrist muscles more and I developed my speed by using that gauge. I used to tear up mediums and used them like Kleenex during sets. Heavy gauge seems to last me a little longer. Plus I have the power to dig if I need to. Plus I get better pick slide effects (pick against the windings as you move towards the nut: like a jet descending.)
are you using a strap locks on it?... cuz my epiphone les paul standard plus top cherry sunburst came with a pair of Epiphone strap locks but it doesn't fit... help :(
@Stewmade64 True dat! I can't wait for it! It's exactly the same as yours! I was looking at the one with the darker edge at first but then the honeyburst caught my eye!
@Georgieisaporgie Wait until you see it up front in person. Amazing flame maple top and the color is really the nicest burst color I've ever seen on a Les Paul.
@Georgieisaporgie Now if you can just spend the whole day playing the guitar rather than get stuck hanging out with the relatives on Christmas, hahaha.I got a new guitar when I was 16 and all I wanted to do was play the thing. I had to get dressed up and head over to the grandparents house to have Christmas dinner. I couldn't wait for the next day just to play my fucking guitar at my leisure. Totally feel for ya.
@Stewmade64 Hahaha that's what i hope for! Sadly, i'm going away skiing on boxing day and there is no way i can take my guitar with me so i'm gonna have to wait a whole week to god damn play it ahha! Ohh i knoww how you feel! It's usually the grandparents that some here though. My mum likes to put me on the spot sometimes when we have guests over and she makes me get my guitar and play it in front of a very silent audience when i don't really want to play it. I'll have to do that on Christmas...
@Georgieisaporgie Ugh! Hate that too. I'm being asked to play my kind of music in front of my ultra conservative relatives who probably won't even recognize what I'm playing or even hate what I'm playing. I'll opt out of distortion just so that I don't scare the old things, so now my guitar playing just sounds lame. If your grandparents are in their 50's or 60's, just learn how to play the 3 chord "Louie, Louie" song: Gmaj-Amaj-Dmaj...that's it. They'll think you're a rock God!
@Stewmade64 Hahahahahhahah! So your just standing there playing lead and they'll all be sitting there staring like "what the fuck?" ahahha! Hahahaha yess they'll want some clear sounds for their ears. Yeahh true hahahaha! My grandad is in his 80's hahaha! Ohh thanks mate, that'll come in handy! Then i'll know what to play for sure!
nice guitar/tone. sounds awesome through that fender deluxe reverb amp! i have an older one of these also in honeyburst plus top. love that finish the best from epiphone.
How are you I have a epiphone les paul standard left handed model had it about six years still sounds great looks like new i 've played it long time excellant guitar i recommend them also for the price.
Here is a guy that understands that the tone is not in the gear, the tone is in the guitarist. I wish I would have found this out 15 years ago when I started playing...before I wasted thousands upon thousands of dollars on overpriced and unnecessary gear. As for the Gibson vs. Epiphone debate: I have owned numerous Gibsons and the ONLY edge that a Gibson has over an Epi is the quality of materials used. Gibsons are way overpriced and the workmanship on them is garbage.
If someone is bent on having an American made Les Paul, buy a Heritage: old Gibson plant, old Gibson luthiers, plek system, better workmanship, no paying for a name. What more could you want?
@vagabond586 American made or not, it's not going to make you a better player. I don't want my pockets empty after such a huge purchase. If I could get a chambered Historic for under $2k.......(have you all stopped laughing yet???)
@Stewmade64 That's right. All of the best guitars I have owned were Japanese made. The newer Koreans are getting closer and closer to the quality of the Japanese instruments. But you are correct, a better guitar will not make you a better player. A great player is a great player, period. Obviously an instrument with higher grade woods and better fretwork is going to be less cumbersome to play, but having an instrument that practically plays itself does not compensate for sloppy technique.
@gdt001976 Yes....but I'm thinking about swapping them out after a recent mod change with a '79 Gibson Les Paul. Much better tone since the frequency roll off is a bit broader.
Holy....SHIT! That guitar fucking screammmssssss. I hate when people look down upon others whom own Epiphone LP's like they are cheap or poor or oh....u have the GENERIC thing... Generic my ass. Les was an Epiphone type of guy at first, now that's original. Epiphone's are amazing guitars. I think they are definitely making their comeback and are EXTREMELY better than Gibson's in the money to quality ratio. Epiphone's are amazing. Just update some hardware like u did, and bam. Good playing my man
@koofdome Thanks. Yeah, I had some guy come up to me after a gig and was complimenting me on this very guitar. We were doing covers songs from Zep, Deep Purple, & Cream. He said, "your guitar tone is sick!!!! Is that a Gibby or an Epi?" I told him, "Epi." He got this huge disappointed look on his face and walked away. Dumbass!!! If it's a chunk of plywood with good hardware and proper electronics and setup, who cares who made it as long as you have THE TONE. Let him drop 3k for a Gibson.
@Stewmade64 Ya, pretty much in todays world, ur throwing down a few thousand just to see the word GIBSON in fancy cursive written across the headstock. Epiphones are amazing guitars and people really underestimate them. I personally have an Epi LP 100. Yes, shitty guitar, but I put new pups in there, all gold bridge pieces (it matches the vintage sunburst haha), push pull pots for extra fun, and some really decent vintage tuning heads. The guitar screams. And i only put about 350 into it
@koofdome I mean you'd pay all that money for the guitar, then add new pickups, pots, etc. At least with the Epiphone, you'd still be way under $1000 total after the purchase of the guitar plus any high quality upgrades. Keep in mind, that Gibson Les Pauls weigh a ton. The chambered ones are a little lighter (plus the chambers help add to the sustain). But bottom line, if you're going to pay more than $1900 for a Les Paul, it better be perfect. And I'm not seeing that from Gibson.
@Stewmade64 Oh dude i totally agree with you. My Epi LP was only 150 used at guitarcenter. I put close to $400 in parts to upgrade and slightly mod it, and people are telling me, "holy shit dude... this thing plays nicer than a Gibson." That's what? A total of about $550 put into it? If I was Gibson, I'd either lower the prices down EXTREMELYYYYYY lower than what they are, or just continue being assholes selling for the amount to buy my car.
@Stewmade64 Also, im not sure about you, but the man himself Jimmy Page is my biggest idol. I'm trying to find a les paul similar to his, but the color or his Les paul #1 is such a weird color iv almost never seen. Also, I know he uses different pups in the neck and bridge position, and also push pulls on ALL 4 knobs which is strange, but does your guitar have any of those mods added to it?
Epiphone is being called today the new Gibson but better. I have the plain top its simply a Brilliant les paul. Todays Epiphone is most certainly better than Gibson. Its a shame that Epiphone guitars are so UNDER PRICED!
@LesterPaul01 BB's from Luxe (Acme Guitar Parts, no joke.) Some may think sounds too warm but it's what I remember Les Pauls sounding like in my head.
I have a 2009 plus top. I paid $620 for mine and its simply a Brilliant les paul (stock) why in hell would you even concider removing or changing any thing on this fantastic guitar.
@stratdem True. I think the guitar as is would be fine but I just wanted a smoother sounding pickup. My tone doesn't require full saturation distortion, which btw works fine with the stock Epi Les Paul pickups.
@stratdem I agree. They are not some cheapy shit like we had in the 80's copies. Plus the weight of the guitar doesn't kill your shoulder after a night's gig.
@neverdia1 Any Gibson Les Paul or Epiphone Les Paul no matter what price, all LP pickguards are removable, unless the guitar style doesn't include a pickguard (for example Slash's Signature Gibson or Epiphone Les Paul.)
@Stewmade64 Thanks! Also I really like ebony's but I noticed they seem to get covered in fingerprints? Lol this will be my first epiphone so I don't want to get it wrong :-)
@uberwolf1 Honeyburst. Cherry looks too bright in my opinion. Under bright stage lighting, honeyburst turns into cherry anyway (according to most pics taken of our band.)
Help please. I have just bought the exact same guitar and the wound D string is impossible to tune. All over the place. Sticking and pinching in the nut. Do i smooth out the bottom of the slot, or make it wider, or angle it towards the peghead. What is the best way to stop it pinching.
@yetikeeper DO NOT WIDEN THE STRING SLOT!!!!! Best thing is to take to an experienced guitar tech or shop and let them properly take a few passes with some nut files. Each file has a different width that coincides with the string gauge you're using. Poor man's method was to take a piece of 600 grit sandpaper and fold once, and then run the corner of the folded side and make a few passes through the string slot. But the D string slot is pretty slim. But yes, the problem lies in the nut slot.
@JONASDBEST No problems. If your guitar is new, you can return. Weird because Epiphone uses Switchcraft toggle pickup selector switches for their Les Pauls. But anything can happen in that cheesy cardboard box they ship those guitars out in. Only a small round styrofoam disc is placed on the toggle during shipping. It might have taken a hit. Also could be something simple: unsoldered wire at the switch. Is the signal cutting out in a certain toggle position or just dead?
Have you ever played 57 classics and the 57' classic plus? If you have could you tell me how the differ from the antiquities? I really like the slightly rough edge that the antiquities have. They sound more paffy than the 57's. I like the 57s but they are maybe a little to smooth. Rock on.
@LesterPaul01 yeah, the SD Ants have a bit more grit but not too much. 57's and +'s are okay. But Seymour uses old school manufacturing plus collaborated with Seth Lover himself before passing away a few years back. I like Seymour Duncan's quality control in addition to his hands on involvement with those Antiquities. Can't say that about the C and C+ 57's. When I find the tone that pleases my ears, I don't go wandering looking for something else. Just my opinion and perception.
Great guitar, better guitarrist ;)

@RolfGuitar Sounds good to me. Depending on what style of guitar you play, those stock Epiphone pickups are not bad.

You just did the same but with old school methods.

do you think there is much difference to Epiphone lp standard plus hb (honeyburst) ?
im just getting a new one atm, but dunno what to buy. ( some epiphone lp still )
any recommendations?
EssentalFx 1 month ago
@EssentalFx No difference, just the plus has a nice flame top maple instead of the plain wood top that's on the standard plain top. No tone difference at all. The plus top looks higher quality to me. It's just more visually pleasing. The tone will be there, just pick the one that looks best to you.
Stewmade64 1 month ago
@Stewmade64 okay, thanks for help =)
EssentalFx 1 month ago
@Stewmade64 oh i forgot, does this guitar stay in tune enought well u think?
EssentalFx 1 month ago
@EssentalFx Initially, no. It's not the tuners, it's the string nut. Do the first inexpensive thing, and rub a graphite pencil over the top of the of the nut, allowing pencil lead dust to drop into each string slot. Make sure there is enough pencil lead dust in each slot. This will allow a smooth glide within the slot, allowing the strings to move when tuned and not get caught within the nut. THAT'S what's causing your tuning problem. Wipe the lead residue off the nut and re-string.
Stewmade64 1 month ago
@Stewmade64 If that doesn't work, you'll need to take the guitar into a local guitar repair shop if you can, and have them take a couple swipes through each string slot with a nut file. Epiphone is known for not cutting their string slots clean within the nut. The tuners are Grovers. Every famous guitar player during the 70's swapped out their stock tuners and installed Grovers. A lot of people think that the guitar is not holding it's tuning because of faulty tuners. Not true....
Stewmade64 1 month ago

6stringzstrummin 2 months ago
@6stringzstrummin Hey thanks. You're going to choke on the price but they are well worth the investment. Luxe capacitors which are offered by Acme Guitar Works.com. I wanted a late 50's Les Paul tone which is what all the great Les Paul Rock players play. Buy the 2 Bumble Bee '57-'58 caps (both .022 mfd.) These will make your Alnico II pickups sing. The Antiquities on my LP are basically those same pickups (both have Alnico II magnets like Slashes LP.)

@GreyBandanna i got it at guitar center for 369$ but its usualy 400-500$ whatever u do dont buy it online pick it up at the store so u can test it
themrrd12345 1 month ago
@themrrd12345 Call me crazy, but mine was just fine coming straight from MF in a cardboard box. It's not like I'm shopping for a Gibson or Fender Custom Shop guitar. The only thing that happened to me was the the first one was sent with the headstock cracked at the angle behind the nut. Sent it back, MF sent a replacement ASAP. No problems. Plus I'm able to do my own adjustments and setups. I'm not afraid of truss rods and intonation adjustments. I get what you mean though.

Will this take off the black color of the neck? sorry i ask alot of questions.... this is really sketchy stuff to be doing to my baby
koofdome 2 months ago
@koofdome NO! Don't stop at the wood. Just dull the surface. That will get you that "satin" finish you want without disturbing the finish color or overall appearance. You just want the neck dull (non-reflective), right? Wait, is your Les Paul black? I thought for some reason it was honeyburst.
Stewmade64 2 months ago
@Stewmade64 No i dont have a honeyburst, thats what i WANT. Right now, my les paul is the Epiphone Les Paul 100 in Vintage Sunburst (see my video) it has a black neck. If you check out this video called "Les Paul Studio Renovation Part 8" by a guy named sully, he seems VERY professional, check out that video please and see if he is doing the right thing please?
koofdome 2 months ago
@koofdome Hmmm, not a big fan of that cabinet scraper but hey, everybody likes to use what's comfortable to them. Personally, I think the cabinet scraper removes too much finish. Plus I'm worried about the scraper not removing in a uniform manner, affecting the neck shape. Am I confused here? I thought you wanted a satin finish rather than remove the finish to bare wood. Which is it?
Stewmade64 2 months ago
@Stewmade64 Gahhhh i dont even know anymore.... i want a satin neck but then the natural wood with a gun stock oil seal gives it a nice look. I want satin though i think, the thing is, i dont know how to get satin while still removing the glossy poly but still KEEP the black paint on my neck uno?
koofdome 2 months ago
@koofdome With the Scotch-Brite type synthetic wool, you will get a smooth satin finish while still keeping the black on the back of the neck. There are three layers of finish on that neck: Sealer over wood (thick clear color), Black urethane, then clear coat urethane (also thick and clear.) All you'll be doing is dulling the top clear coat layer. That's the stuff that that guy was scraping off the neck. It won't take long to dull it down. In 5 minutes it should be dull to your liking.
Stewmade64 2 months ago
And btw, i own a Line 6 Spider 3 and i regret alot for buying it. So digital, so ... not variable sound, so limited sounds coming from that crappy amp. I also have a Yamaha F-20 which is such a good amp, i dont know why Yamaha quitted the amp business. I can say that sometimes it sounds like a valve amp, although it uses transistors, im serious about this :))
orfmor 2 months ago
i wasnt able to fully explore its sound opportunities, since the guy who was the owner of the paula was in a hurry and...I want to play mainly funk, ska, blues, jazz, some metal, punk...I wanna know how the stock, factory made, with no modificiations can handle mainly ska and funk, can i get that high end trebley warm tone from it? I know that you understand me what i mean :)))
orfmor 2 months ago
@orfmor You mean the middle position on the Les Paul right? I LOVE that pickup position, BUT you need the right pickups to get THAT TONE. Crap, it's been so long since I've played that guitar with stock pickups I just don't remember. I don't remember thinking that it could not cover all that you mentioned.
Stewmade64 2 months ago
My impression for this guitar, from all the videos i've seen on youtube is that its muddy and dirty...not the case in 10% of the videos where the guitar sounds excellent, solid, not that bassy...But how this guitar actually sounds in real? Can you get the good tone out of it if you dont have a valve amp, using transistor-solid amp? Can you make it sound good if you have a good experience in setting amps? I cant find this guitar in my town and check her out and see how she really actually sounds.
orfmor 2 months ago
@orfmor Good point. Type of mic in camera being used in filming examples, crappy pedals which affect the tone, playing to loud that it distorts levels while recording, solid state good or bad, tube amp too small or too large, all change the tone. All I can say is that in person while recording this, the sound is fuller but not bassy. Very warm sounding. Solid state like a Line 6 or Crate may sound a bit sterile and bland. But my ears like warmer classic rock tones more than Atreyu tones.
Stewmade64 2 months ago
@Stewmade64 Thanks alot, this is the first reply i've received on youtube, after asking a question and its so full, with good backrounded explanation. I bet half of those "Lespaulers" are children which have just bought it and they use crappy full gain distortions and max-ed trebles and so on...And yes, i totally agree, all these things u've mentioned affect the tone, in some way. Idk, i really like the look and feel of the guitar, i've once infact played one for a minute or two, but
orfmor 2 months ago
@orfmor Unless you plan on purchasing another amp, I'd bring your amp down to the guitar place that sells the Epi Les Paul and try it through your amp.....even better, your setup if it's not such a hassle dragging your favorite crunch pedal along too. Play when the store isn't blaring fucking Sammy Hagar shit in the store so that you can hear what your playing....or worse that kid who keeps constantly playing the intro to "My Own Worst Enemy" by Lit. GEE-zus! Alright already!!!! hahaha.

@Stewmade64
Seen a lot of bands playing live with this too and it sounds good, just needs a good amp.
iWillRateYouNow 2 months ago
I still can't stop watching this video and just looking at how beautiful that color is..... I really want a satin neck though, and it DOES NOT COME IN HONEYBURST!!! I really wonder what a plain top honeyburst would look like. I'm trying to find as close as a look as jimmy page's lp
koofdome 2 months ago
@koofdome I think you'd be disappointed in the plain top. Page has played flame topped faded cherry sunburst Les Pauls before (faded to look honeyburst.) What's with your Jimmy Page quest? He's your grandparents age and he doesn't have the chops anymore. Listen more to Derek Trucks, Andy Wood, or even Paul Gilbert. Plus playing a guitar slung down to your knees will kill your back when you hit your 30's. Don't mind me, just giving you a hard time. =)
Stewmade64 2 months ago
@Stewmade64 Well the thing is, jimmy page is literally the person who made me want to play guitar. He's amazing man, and I'm tryin real hard to meet him before the old man dies, which hopefully wont be long. I'm just looking for a satin neck on a Les Paul in honeyburst. I was thinking plain top cuz in some pics, his guitar looks boxy and flat, and plain and very worn. Plus top looks too modern and stuff.
koofdome 2 months ago
@koofdome I get it. Well, good luck finding a satin necked Epi Les Paul Standard. If I were you, do it old school by taking a Scotch-Brite pad and dull the back of the neck with that. That's what we all did in the 70's bro. There is so much polyurethane finish on that neck that it would take you about 6 re-scuffs to get into the bare wood of that neck. That should work.
Stewmade64 2 months ago
@Stewmade64 Ya I have bad news, I went through with calling epiphone and they got back to me and can't get me a custom Epi LP standard in honeyburst with a satin neck.... All i want is a epi les paul with a satin neck, but in that color....oh well. I'm gonna go with this guitar and do my own satin finish to it. Have you heard about using 0000 steel wool? I'm not sure, im scared to do it, and my guitar tech said sorry dude, but i wont touch that stuff on a guitar that isn't mine....dammit..
koofdome 2 months ago
@koofdome Don't use steel wool! Only people who know what they are doing use that stuff. Go get the stuff that they put on the back of sponges to scrub pots and pans. Hardware stores carry the synthetic wool called Scotch-Brite by 3M. It's safe to you and won't get picked up by your magnetic pickups like steel wool. Green is aggressive while the brown color is conservative (I'd pick brown.) You can't screw up. Scuff the area you want and wipe off residue. Plenty of finish to not ruin.
Stewmade64 2 months ago
@Stewmade64 great advise man. the steel wool i know is some dangerous stuff, get it in your pickups, screwed. Try to wipe it off the body from flakes that come off, screwed with scratches. I was thinking maybe 800 sandpaper then moving to even 2000?? I dont know... i dont want to get to the bare wood, then ill get splinters and stuff haha. I just want a satin neck like on the Epi Traditional Pro. But im pretty sure its a kind of seal or paint over the bare wood
koofdome 2 months ago
@koofdome Sorry I meant grey synthetic wool. Brown is more aggressive than the green. I think you'll be fine. That urethane finish on those guitars is so thick, you'd have to go to town on that thing with 100 grit to get to the wood that fast. Use the same amount of pressure you'd use to lightly remove wax from polishing the guitar. Moving to 2000 will end up polishing the finish back to gloss. Sandpaper removes too much finish. Synthetic wool has more control over your desired effect.
Stewmade64 2 months ago
@Stewmade64 Oh, and check out my channel, for some reason i cant post a link to my video, but its a video of me showing off my current Les Paul with all the custom work i did to it that i'v been talkin about.
koofdome 2 months ago
@XXXGarfield My own. I order my own specs through Steve Clayton. They are heavy gauge. Heavies strengthened my wrist muscles more and I developed my speed by using that gauge. I used to tear up mediums and used them like Kleenex during sets. Heavy gauge seems to last me a little longer. Plus I have the power to dig if I need to. Plus I get better pick slide effects (pick against the windings as you move towards the nut: like a jet descending.)

I'll have to do that on Christmas...

@Georgieisaporgie Ugh! Hate that too. I'm being asked to play my kind of music in front of my ultra conservative relatives who probably won't even recognize what I'm playing or even hate what I'm playing. Stewmade64 3 months ago
Gibsons are way overpriced and the workmanship on them is garbage.
vagabond586 3 months ago
@vagabond586 Agreed.
Stewmade64 3 months ago
If someone is bent on having an American made Les Paul, buy a Heritage: old Gibson plant, old Gibson luthiers, plek system, better workmanship, no paying for a name. What more could you want?
vagabond586 3 months ago
@vagabond586 American made or not, it's not going to make you a better player. I don't want my pockets empty after such a huge purchase. If I could get a chambered Historic for under $2k.......(have you all stopped laughing yet???)
Stewmade64 3 months ago
@Stewmade64 That's right. All of the best guitars I have owned were Japanese made. The newer Koreans are getting closer and closer to the quality of the Japanese instruments. But you are correct, a better guitar will not make you a better player. A great player is a great player, period. Obviously an instrument with higher grade woods and better fretwork is going to be less cumbersome to play, but having an instrument that practically plays itself does not compensate for sloppy technique.
vagabond586 3 months ago
Quick mod question -- did you keep the stock pots when you installed the new caps?
gdt001976 3 months ago
@gdt001976 Yes....but I'm thinking about swapping them out after a recent mod change with a '79 Gibson Les Paul. Much better tone since the frequency roll off is a bit broader.
Stewmade64 3 months ago
Holy....SHIT! That guitar fucking screammmssssss. I hate when people look down upon others whom own Epiphone LP's like they are cheap or poor or oh....u have the GENERIC thing... Generic my ass. Les was an Epiphone type of guy at first, now that's original. Epiphone's are amazing guitars. I think they are definitely making their comeback and are EXTREMELY better than Gibson's in the money to quality ratio. Epiphone's are amazing. Just update some hardware like u did, and bam. Good playing my man
koofdome 3 months ago
@koofdome Thanks. Yeah, I had some guy come up to me after a gig and was complimenting me on this very guitar. We were doing covers songs from Zep, Deep Purple, & Cream. He said, "your guitar tone is sick!!!! Is that a Gibby or an Epi?" I told him, "Epi." He got this huge disappointed look on his face and walked away. Dumbass!!! If it's a chunk of plywood with good hardware and proper electronics and setup, who cares who made it as long as you have THE TONE. Let him drop 3k for a Gibson.
Stewmade64 3 months ago
@Stewmade64 Ya, pretty much in todays world, ur throwing down a few thousand just to see the word GIBSON in fancy cursive written across the headstock. Epiphones are amazing guitars and people really underestimate them. I personally have an Epi LP 100. Yes, shitty guitar, but I put new pups in there, all gold bridge pieces (it matches the vintage sunburst haha), push pull pots for extra fun, and some really decent vintage tuning heads. The guitar screams. And i only put about 350 into it
koofdome 3 months ago
@koofdome Let's see you do those mods on a Gibson, then you're out even more money.
Stewmade64 3 months ago
@Stewmade64 wait, wat do u mean
koofdome 3 months ago
@koofdome I mean you'd pay all that money for the guitar, then add new pickups, pots, etc. At least with the Epiphone, you'd still be way under $1000 total after the purchase of the guitar plus any high quality upgrades. Keep in mind, that Gibson Les Pauls weigh a ton. The chambered ones are a little lighter (plus the chambers help add to the sustain). But bottom line, if you're going to pay more than $1900 for a Les Paul, it better be perfect. And I'm not seeing that from Gibson.
Stewmade64 3 months ago
@Stewmade64 Oh dude i totally agree with you. My Epi LP was only 150 used at guitarcenter. I put close to $400 in parts to upgrade and slightly mod it, and people are telling me, "holy shit dude... this thing plays nicer than a Gibson." That's what? A total of about $550 put into it? If I was Gibson, I'd either lower the prices down EXTREMELYYYYYY lower than what they are, or just continue being assholes selling for the amount to buy my car.
koofdome 3 months ago
@Stewmade64 Also, im not sure about you, but the man himself Jimmy Page is my biggest idol. I'm trying to find a les paul similar to his, but the color or his Les paul #1 is such a weird color iv almost never seen. Also, I know he uses different pups in the neck and bridge position, and also push pulls on ALL 4 knobs which is strange, but does your guitar have any of those mods added to it?

@Stewmade64 hey m8 did you have any problem with the knob for the pickup selection?
JONASDBEST 4 months ago
