  • That plane just folded right up and took a run out powder!!!

  • curtis electric props leaked oil,do to design,he flew longer than he should have,it was known that the props leaked. After this the last prototype has conventional props.

  • @thresher4 I thought that the prop went into fine pitch?

  • @TheM1a2d3d4y5 Fine pitch is used to get max rpm. This prop design had problems with oil leaking from the hub causing the rear prop to go into reverse pitch, there was supossed to be a stop that prevented this from happening but don't remember details if it wasn't on or not.

Hughes sued Curtis Electric and it was settled out of court.

  • @thresher4 Oh yeah, reverse pitch! That's what I meant. :) Thanks! I understand now. I guess if I had been in a crash like that I would might have sued someone too!

  • @TheM1a2d3d4y5 Aparently if he would have backed off the throddle on that side to a lower rpm it would have made the reverse pitch lessened to keep it flying, less drag.Hughes wasn't an experienced test pilot.

  • @thresher4 Yeah I agree, if I had been in his place I think I would have shut down the engine all together, he should have been able to make it back to Culliver City with just one.

  • @TheM1a2d3d4y5 The question also is what would fearthering it do?normally you would back off thrddles and see what side is faultering, feather it,slowly bring up good engine.

  • What piece of music did they use for the opening part of that scene?

  • @CharlieDaChoralier Toccata and Fugue by Bach.

  • The way of the future... Show me all the blueprints. Show me all the blueprints.

  • Well, it looks like people whipping out their phones to update their twitter status instead of helping isn't new. The only difference is that they used cameras for the newspaper.

  • that guy at 6:08 how fucking annoying would that be

  • This scene is the best one shot that year. To say the least

  • howerd sould of landid before the propes got mesed up but he wanted to go moer

  • The crash was caused by the propellers on the right engine to go into reverse mode. NO pilot could have flown that aircraft in that status No persons on the ground were injured. Sadly Both Pan Am and TWA are now defunked- Life is very short - no time for for greed. We could use a Mr. Hughes in our government today.

  • Why do crashes take so long in hollywood. That crash wouldve been 5 sec tops in real life

  • howard hughes could have had the best pilots in the world test fly his airplanes. instead he did it himself. he was not one of the best pilots in the world. he was lucky nobody was killed in this incident.

  • Well boys we had a great flight now let's land it on top if them houses

  • Buy this movie!

    Believe me, it`s worth it.

  • @Norwaymember I have it. It's awesome. It was worth the buy. I always wanted that movie, since I borrowed it from a friend. But I wanted to buy one. And I did. :)

  • @Dinosorable Haha!

I borrowed it from the library, but only some months later I bought it on Blue-ray :D

    Almost same story ;-)

Leonardo DiCaprio is my number 1 favorite actor.

  • @Norwaymember Is Leonardo DiCaprio the guy who played Howard Hughes?

  • @Dinosorable Yes? Didn`t you know?

  • @Norwaymember I didn't.

  • @Dinosorable but are you familiar with him?

  • @Norwaymember No.

  • inception

  • the plane would have flipped then if it didnt the wingg would have come off then boom he would be dead

    but good movie!!!

  • @epicorange747 You do know that this movie is a true story and that crash did actually happen and he survived but suffered the same injuries just as he did in the movie

  • @Elimorton IM just saying the crash doesnt seem right, alot of things that should have heppend

  • Perfect landing

  • Is the plane still going fast but it's just in slow motion? Idk it just looked like it wasn't going that fast but shit besides that that was one of the most incredible scenes I've ever seen!

  • What a beautiful plane...

  • For all intents and purposes, that should've killed Howard. If the crash hadn't, the recovery process should have. Yet, he lived another 30 years after this event.

  • There are no powerful enough words to describe this. You are watching a fantastic, timeless, powerful and legendary scene.

  • great quality, thanks mate

  • somebody remind me again why leo didnt win best actor for this movie?

  • @theajroseshow Because jamie fox is black

  • Perfect 10 on the landing.

  • modified P38

  • BEAUTIFUL plane!

  • Take notes Michael Bay...

  • @youdude88 CINEMA HISTORY...MARTY SCORSESE YOU SCORE AGAIN.....40 years ago...there it was KUBRICK...now...he have SCORSESE....tahnk you god for send this 2 genius!....IT WAS VERY FUNNY WHAT A you WROTE HERE "TAKE NoTES MICHAEL BAY"...JAJA NICE....ALSO TO SHIA LEBOUF...THAT IDIOT SAYS" MICHAEL IS THE BEST SHOOTER IN FILM HOSTORY"...WTF???

  • He's gonna take you back to the past......to fly the shitty planes that suck ass...

  • I especially like the music that was chosen for this scene, If you are having trouble finding the same version used in the film, check out this video. > J.S Bach - Toccata And Fugue in D minor (Orchestral Version) <

The part used in this scene starts at 3:08, the whole song is 9 min long

  • Extraordinary movie, well directed and acted! It is one of my favorites! Howard Hughes is my favorite aviator, to bad he digressed in his later years.

  • What happens after when they take pictures I didn't see.

  • damn it scorsese

    you are so damn amazing

  • I would say that's a successful landing.

  • This event happened today, 65 years ago. R.I.P. The incredible Howard Hughes!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LOOOOOOOOOOL THIS SCENE IS SO FUCKING FUNNY!!!!!!!

  • @skittlesareyum48 Unsuccessful troll is unsuccessful...

  • Leonardi diCaprio is a great actor. The part where he screams is very realistic! He's good at playing the crazy guys!

  • Bach, Toccata and Fugue in D minor, organ is the symphony i guess

  • WHAT A MACHINE!

  • thnx thts a good find ..no word on just the symphony its self or composer??

  • Howard Hughes was very lucky to survive that, broken bones, a collasped lung, internal and external bleeding and trauma topped off with 3rd degree burns.

  • DiCaprio is to acting as Hughes was to aviation. Masters of their respective crafts.

  • @Vegna24

The plane crashed because the oil pressure dropped so low that both props in the right engine reversed. If Howard stopped the right or both engines, he may of been able to land at Beverly Hills country club

This plane didn't go into production, but a second prototype was produced

There are two props per engine because it is a fast plane, at least as far as piston engine planes of 1946. Its called countrarotating props. Of course, jet engines were born in 1945.

Also, the song is the f

  • @SCJohnson77 Hughes also recieved money from the government to build XF-11s but he never delievered because of his crash. After that the program never recovered.

  • watta crap effects?

  • What a brutal scene this is.

  • The first time I saw The Aviator I thought he was going to die after this..., but then I remembered Howard Hughes died in the 70's :S

This scene is sooo intense that it's difficult for me to look at the screen >.<

Leo is the best... I don't know why he hasn't won an Oscar yet... it looks like the Academy has something against him...

  • 3 Questions:

1: How did the plane fail? What happened to the engine?

2: Do they still make these planes?

3: Why is there 2 propellers per engine instead of 1?

  • @Vegna24 If you search for the HF-11 on Wikipedia there's a good article all about it there - and what happened. Hope that's some help!

  • Always fasten your seatbelt.

  • Obviously the plane engine had troubles BUT, I have read Hughes was to only fly the plane for 15 - 20 minutes, not near 2 hours. Plus he wasn't following safety procedures or training protocol. In all honesty, sad to say, his fault. Shame too.

  • nigga got raped...

  • What kind of injuries did he get in the results to the crash? It looks near fatal. The only thing I know of is a broken leg and severe burns ... what else?

  • @Vegna24

    Brain damage.

  • @Vegna24 3rd degree burns, broke all of his ribs, shatter his leg, displaced his heart from his left cavity to his right cavity, and broke most or all the bones it his face

  • What was his reasoning in not wearing seat restraints whilst flying? Surely this would make the slightest aerial manoeuvring highly dangerous as he would be thrown around the cockpit? I don't understand.

  • Random Dude: What's your speed, Howard?

    Leo: 292!

Random Dude: Alright, take her back to 200.

    Leo: No damn way!

  • Comment removed

  • I cannot imagine the pain that Hughes went through...:(

  • @cubanangel1985 He had a crushed collar bone, multiple cracked ribs, crushed chest with collapsed left lung, shifting his heart to the right side of his chest cavity, and numerous third-degree burns.

  • @cubanangel1985 Every time I think of crash landing, I think of this particular movie scene.

  • Não está em D minor... fuuuuuuuuuu

Mas continua fantástica, em qual será que está?

Gostaria de poder baixar nesta versão.....

  • I can't believe that people said Scorsese had lost it watching this movie . It's a very good movie with several extremely powerful scene like this one . And it's much better than the epic mess called gangs of new york or the appaling rip off which gave him the oscar . The real weakness is Becksinsale

  • @nedalnekbrad i agree with all your points. It's completely what i think so too. And we we are both dead right.

  • What I didn't understand, is that these guys are smart enough to design a airplane, but on its first flight, they decide to fly it over Beverly Hills? Didn't they have test ranges back then?

  • @douglas787 no they didn't

  • And did i mention this is art? :D

  • The funny thing is that, even if he didn't crash and the air force still bought the plane, they'd have never had the chance to use it before it became outdated.

And the crash was caused by the contra-rotating prop suddenly rotating the other way. So nothing would have kept it from crashing :/

  • best "pain" sequence ive seen dicaprio do

  • just so you know, he says "goddamn" A LOT in this movie

  • I will never forget this scene. Even if I close my eyes, I have shivers when I hear him scream!!

  • one question, shouldn't houghs plane had a emergency parachute ejector so he could have ejected before he crashed and saved his life from those injuries?

  • @MrShapiroman At that time, that technology had not been invented.

  • @rockgod2131

    what about jet engines?

  • @Vegna24 There were experimental versions that were being tested, but none were put into production.

  • wow...makes you not want to become a pilot, huh?

  • I don't know how to fly, but by God, that's an impressive airplane!

  • I remember watching that the first time. Man that's intense.

  • @yonigga223 Saw it last night on TV. Agreed. Didn't know the story of Hughes. Really thought he was going to die.

  • to malow 1234...sorry cant reply properly-laptop broke. send me private message on my chanel.

  • Geez Even home is not safe! The lady in the kitchen must've had Jedi skills to move before that engine when through the kitchen window LOL I would've just looked out of the window and probably get clobbered by that thing!

  • if it didnt stay level with full rudder and aileron why he didnt kill the live engine?

  • @dimis01 You should've been his air traffic controller that day.

  • @yonigga223 He was his engineer you stupid farmer

  • You should always wear ur seatbelt

  • Dude....That Crash is Insane!

  • Roger that houston , we have crashed and fucked up all kinds of shit , over and out charlie alpha tango 41 .

  • i meant living directors...dead i'd say ,david lean hitchcock -although over rated-,goddard -dont know if he's dead.

  • great living directors...scorsese is a great genius, i wouldnt put it past him to nail the sun in the sky. i...a great admirer of his work, thought there was NO chance he could evolve any more, that he had reached the ceiling, then he comes with shutter island. this film destroyd me. i went to see it 8 times in the first week and i m still reelling from the shock. good directors, yeh, a couple, de palma is one, not sure even of a second. good but not great ...

  • @sayff1 hmmm that is very interesting, i found shutter island one of his least accomplised films, i prefer some of his smaller films sometimes such as maybe mean streets and king of comedy.

  • although without a doubt scorsese's purely cinematic instinct is unsurpassed, and in my opinion unsurpassable, especially when it comes to his PAINFULLY beautiful imagery, for me he is much more than that. he is a whole keliedascope of thing, in his work there is great literature, great art, wonderful feel for music, and last but not least, a powerful undercurrent of religious obssession. for me he has been a great educator.

  • Howard Hughes is one of the most Legendary men that ever lived...

  • wonderful.

  • And I want one of those so fucking bad.

  • poor little leo. :(

  • is this really Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor ? im having trouble finding this part of song

  • @fre3zing I found it on another YouTube vid; type in edwin lemare and you should see a vid for edwin lemare tocatta and fugue (philharmonic organ rolls). Transcript of Lemare's recording. Right at 1:37 on that vid, you can hear the sequence.

  • Leo is so cute.

  • If he had shut the starboard engine down after it's propellor reversed, he could've saved the plane and made an emergency landing.

  • what is the song name?

  • @alvarolualco Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor by Bach

  • what is the song ,s name?

  • what is the song ,s name

  • what is the song ,s name

  • didn't make a plan, forgot his FMOST and FMMM, tisk tisk tisk..

  • damn...lovely background music...but then the scene ends horribly...it's awful watching all that stuff happen to him...

  • I love how the last two words he said before the engine flopped was- "to descend".

  • I've always wondered if it's true about him buying those pictures of Kate and Spencer. I've never been able to find it anywhere.

  • I remember watching this movie and laughing at the crash scene. Of course, if you had directed the scene to be as swift and brief as a real crash, it would be hard to potray to the audience what it must have "felt" like.. I'm amazed he even survived the real deal. Imagine being tossed in your car at 150 mph towards the beverly hills suburb without airbags and surrounded by highly flammable liquids :p Ouch...

  • damn i thought i was watching a war movie this is intense! very very well done

  • Ooooo weeeee at 5:36! Soldier to the rescue!

  • The camera angles and shots during this scene are PHENOMENAL! Leo is such a GREAT ACTOR...

  • man I feel so bad for Hughes cause after the crash his OSD just went out of control from there and things for him started going down hill from there because of the medicine he was given in the hostptial that made his OSD worse if they had any medication for OCD at the time I think Hughes would still be alive today and I think it's a damn shame he did not live very long and that he died in 1974 if thats right and sorry if I got the facts wrong Howard Hughes is the greatest plot of all time!!!

  • did he have a seatbelt?

  • Amazing that Hughes survived that. And what a shame that the XF-11 program didn't recover, such a beautiful aircraft.

  • Damn, Leo's amazing in this scene.

Fuck it, hes amazing in every scene

  • i read that the starboard engine went into reverse so thats why it crashed or something

  • @TheWhiteOwl23 Yes the contra rotating propellor on the starboard side leaked oil after 45 minutes due to a design flaw. They knew this but maybe forgot that issue. When it leaked out the rear prop when into reverse pitch causing drag on that side.Had he killed the engine he would have been able to control the drag and land it.Hughes wasn't a trained test pilot.

  • That reporter was an asshole.

  • what is the name of the song?

  • Comment removed

  • @alvarolualco Bach - Toccata & Fugue in D Minor.

  • Did he survive

  • Shit I've never seen Leo get so fucked up in a movie...

  • @Deancho well....he froze to death in Titanic, he got shot in the rib and died in Blood Diamond, he got shot in the head in the Departed, he poisoned himself and died in Romeo and Juliet, and he supposedly got stuck in a dream in Inception....he pretty much gets fucked up in every movie. lol but hes still a great actor

  • @M0vi3ComicGamerGuy you forgot that he gets a lobotomy in shutter island...

  • Problem with the special effects is that the plane looks like it's crashing at 20 mph.

  • @oncall21 No, it probably crashed at about 70 or 80mph. Effects look pretty realistic to me...

  • qui est le compositeur de cette musique

  • A U.S. Marine saved his bacon from getting too crispy, Semper Fi & Hoo Rah...

  • How many other aircraft have the steering wheel thingy for a joystick?

  • @tsuyoshi15 almost all boeing aircraft today.

  • @tsuyoshi15 just about every plane that isn't a fighter plane lol...

  • i love this move and this part is one of the best plane crash scene ever!!

  • @patrick2665 - have to agree, astonishing scene!

  • starting song?

  • @Rwy02 read the description

  • @fallingwatersnz my mistake.

  • Lol at shit special effects

  • @Swannyuk1094 shit special effects?

  • @Goobelham Yer, when he crashes into the house and that, the special effectsare shit

  • First and foremost....Considered himself an Aviator.

  • what is this song in background?

  • @Hegoita toccata and fugue, however i dont know if its in D minor bc of the changes in instrument for a movie or not.

  • love this movie!!

    the songs are fantastic

do u know the name of this song in the beginnig

  • What a pity, those houses where so beutifull...

  • this is so painful to watch...

  • Comment removed

  • I remember this scene, it was really painful to watch.

  • wow, that looked pretty real. i'm not a huge fan of DiCaprio, he's an ok actor, but he does a great job in this scene, it really seems like he got hurt.

  • If he'd shut down the starboard engine, or at least idled it to lessen the effects of the reverse-pitch oscilation, the incident couldn't have happened.

  • this music made me love this movie more!

  • @camposi toccata of bach i think

  • @darklightnessful

toccata of J. S. Bach I know .... this strings-version is especially awesome!

  • brilliant scene- perfect in every way. In my opinion Dicaprio deserved the oscar for this movie over Jamie Foxx.

  • beautiful plane,hh was a top man huge balls

  • That is some scary stuff--I live about 2 miles from the Los Angeles airport, smack in the middle of the airlines' landing path! About 30 flights an hour pass right over my house, so low that I can clearly see the landing gear. I literally hold my breath for 10 seconds as each plane passes overhead.

  • Leonardo Dicaprio is wesome actor, his coop witch Scoorse is great add into movie world

  • DiCaprio has really come a long way. A truly skilled actor.

  • Leonardo is such a tremendous actor! combine him with Scorsese and you know your going to get a masterpiece.

    @tornhill1 thnx 4 posting!
