This is about as close to the bone as any Australian film has yet come to an examination of dark side of mateship, sexual repression and how we related our natural environment. These themes were uncomfortable then and probably no go areas today.

I saw this movie on HBO back in the 70's and it still haunts me! The guy shows up to interview for a teaching job, many beers later after clubbing Kangaroo's at night wakes up with his pants down after being 'sodomized'. He has a gun with one bullet left. I've told people about this movie 'Wake in Fright' or 'The Outback' and they don't believe me. I want to get the DVD but it's about 30 bucks on auction sites. Anyone got a copy out there? This movie is like no other.

if u are going to buy it better to get from here in australia it has just be re released and restored i saw it on dvd last week & my opinion has only been re enforced iu am going to see it on the big screeen in 2 weeks time as i did nearly 40 years ago..

It's been at least 30 years plus since I've seen this movie. I remember all of the guys getting drunk at night and 'clubbing' Kangaroos to death. We're they really sodomizing the dead Kangaroos or is it my imagination? I just remember that these guys were doing all sorts of degrading stuff when they were drunk. Cheers from Texas!
