“You can’t play nothing on modern trumpet that doesn’t come from him, not even modern shit. I can’t even remember a time when he sounded bad playing the trumpet. Never. Not even one time. He had great feeling up in his playing and he always played on the beat. I just loved the way he played and sang. " - Miles Davis about Armstrong
@harrisonaard1 You know what's odd? My favorite album is Insomniac by green day, and a few weeks ago I learned that it was released the same day that I was born
With even a mediocre tune Louis could make it swing, put his own stamp on it. What a musician, and only he could pull this off. While many might ridicule him for doing this song, I bet none of them could do as well. Envy turned to criticism?
fantastic tune. but im curious about the comedy routine by his sidekick. isnt that method with making the eyes standing out something taken from the minstrel-show tradition? Or was it a common comedy routine? I get a vibe when i see it that is somehow uneasy.
@tripjet999 i dunno, he was 70 when he pegged out, not a bad innings. a legend and the 'king of new orleans' often imitated, never beaten. a true entertainer.
Me too! It's amazing how a song like this just gets stuck in your head forever. And even when I worked in a CD store with a BIG jazz section, I don't think I ever found this on CD.
Cheers to Doctor D! He is still broadcasting.
I tuned in for the funny stuff, but I realize that I learned a LOT of musical history along the way. Long may he reign!
Wow holy crap! I heard this once in something like 2nd or 3rd grade. This song has stayed wit me since then. Now I get to hear it again today! Wow! This is such a feel good happy song as Satch was a musician. Also. Does anyone know who the clarinet player is? He looks like a well known in jazz that I might have seen before.
is a fantastic happy tune, i know it for nearly 40 years as a record. Tonight i saw it for the first time on video and remembered the happy times in my childhood, when my father bought the record.
I think the clarinetplayer is Buster Bailey,
he joined the AllStars in 1965 and to stay until 1967 when Joe Muranyi came.
I believe the pianist is Marty Napolean and the drummer is definitely Danny Barcelona. Not sure who the bassist is - does not look like Arvell Shaw, who was Pop's regular bassist.
The clarinetist is Buster Bailey, the bassist is Buddy Catlett & the pianist is Marty Napoleon. This was taped in September, 1966 & it aired in April, 1967.
I was always wondering where the Cheesecake Shop got their song from :P Now I know! (Shop in Australia if you're wondering... and the best place to buy a chocolate mudcake... mmm)
This makes me happy :D

I think the bassman must be Buddy Catlett, he joind the AllStars as regular member in 1965 and stayed until the end 1971.
I never saw Louis and his Band live but would give my last shirt for having the chance to do!
Have a happy swingin' new year!
