I would make sure to get the love going with pc and electronics (a trip to book store for a few books should be in order), then go around the web getting insight by any means (ok be ethical, in fact become an ethical hacker) then go help out uni grads with their pc and build them a proper one
just buy one of those $12 testers...plug it in and the lights come on and tell us if it's ok or not.
