Anybody else old enough to remember when you needed talent to succeed in this business? Now, mostly, it's the kind of business my dogs do on the grass. Business! Drop it. Good boy. Bollocks.
Major & very funny misheard lyric for me in this song & I'm wondering if anyone else hears it? When Levi Stubbs sings that "You come and you go, leaving just your pictrue behind." Does anyone else mishear it as, "You come and you go, leaving just your 'pizza' behind."? I just hope when she left that pizza behind it was deep dish, with mozzarella cheese, Italian meatballs, perhaps some mushrooms and olives!
@Surt811 That's funny! When my son was about 1 or 2, he would always stop what he was doing to listen to the them music of Fresh Prince of Bel Air. When I was a kid, I used to sit in the chair & rock back n forth to the Spider-Man theme music.
Back in those Motown days Mr. Gordy made his singers dress, talk, and act like gentlemen---at least onstage. No way would he have tolerated saggy pants and vulgar language from his singers.
@southernsugar59 that was when singers were true and inspired, they did it to actually express their feeling and entertain, plus back then blacks and whites alike were decent and respectful of the audience and knew they were role models for the rest of the world, not like now, jumping across the stage and their pants hanging off their butts and too short, and girls showing their uterus with that clothing
Oh my God ..after watching the video more closely..I retract that statement..the four tops are awesome dancers compared to those white people back there trying to dance!!!! At least they have some soul in their moves...meanwhile the whites are back there moving around awkardly and trying to figure out what to do with their hands!! HAHA!! And I am white!!
i saw this song when i was little and my mom tape me old film dancing to it when my brother was in the army and he should all his army friends lol......
Early Boy Band material! The fact is, The Four Tops couldn't really dance, never mind the backround girls. Who knows, with a bit more rehearsal to synchronise the moves these guys could have been as big as The Beetles (or Jesus!)
Boy Band material?? Vocal group, rather than compare them to Boyzone and Take That, and they were all in their late 20s when they performed this, hardly boys! Also as they said they were SINGERS, not dancers...
You know,at first I didn't want to watch this vid just because it was live, and now days singers (not all of them are this way) can't sing....so they get their voices edited. Then when they sing live it sounds really bad...but these folks, they have tatent! XD
@AerithGainsborough11 You are completely right!! Nowadays when 99% of them try to sing live it SUCKS and it is a TOTALLY different sound than you hear on the radio. I've heard some that I couldn't even tell were the same people! Back then people had TALENT...only very few of them have that kind of talent nowadays.I wonder why that is???
@memorysticky that is the point these guys dont need a band just give them a mic and they still sound unbelieveable. check out their acapella stuff on here. there is not one vocalist today that could come even close to these guys. levi stubbs is with out doubt the best vocalist ever.
@AerithGainsborough11 If I had to say why, I'd say it's because today's society revolves around physical looks of the singer (just the mainstream stuff), while back then it revolved around talent. Today if you have good looks and a barable voice, you'll get a record deal. It just so happened that the singer of the four tops was handsome, no homo.
@heavyxpress3000 What?! The people on Soul Train certainly could dance & did dance well. As for Bandstand, maybe some of the regulars could dance, but they weren't in the same league as the Soultrain dancers.
You have to understand the times, then. It was a time when whites and blacks didn't mix in public. So, the fact that a bunch of white people ran on stage, was actually a way to promote racial harmony. At the time there were race riots and and integration going on in the South. You cannot imagine the now, the hardship for the African Americans at the time. Putting the whites on stage was an attempt to stop the racial tension at the time.
@ForHizGlory06 The people behind them are horrible dancers and all the other people as well, but those people on the stage at the back are mainly back up singers.
Saw the Tops live on several occasions including brilliant times in Sheffield with Steve, Cliff, Geoff and Rog from Darlo. Good times .. brilliant times ... I love ya lads wherever you are!
Check out Bernadette too. As Motown goes this song has a rather Headbanger structure to it, as does Where Did Our Love go mentioned below. The real reason is good writing being delivered with conviction and quality. Of course your gonna like it. Check it out: I know these records nearly too well and this is not a lip sync. Much more organ on this and the sax solo is improvised differently. Arrangement is abridged .
i have this on tape,i also got there new dvd release and on the dvd duke said there singers not dancers but the for tops is dancing there butt off on here
They were really good dancers I think. I liked that they weren't overly caught up in choreography, its there but not "too" much. Their stage moves always have more of a natural feel to them, esp. Duke, who I always liked watching the most.
just brilliant!
