He may go to prison, but if he does, he is not going to get to do any social activities since there are many in-prisoned people who want's to kill him. For example homeless people would commit a crime just to get a place to live for a couple of months, a warm, cosy bed to sleep in and free food. They NEED a place to rehabilitate, and this Norwegian prison seems to fit the bill. I think this kind of treatment towards criminals is rather effective. If they are forced to have crappy living conditions in facilities of poor quality, they'll come out angry and vengeful. But still I wonder about the quality of their schools and hospitals...:/

@shmaveyea I never stated it as a fact, merely as an opinion. Criminals, no matter how large their crime is, are mentally and psychologically disturbed in some degree. They NEED a place to rehabilitate, and this Norwegian prison seems to fit the bill. Like I said before, it would do nobody good if they are resentful towards people who forced them to live in facilities of poor quality. Yet even after having said all this, I still believe criminals don't deserve this great a treatment.

For those of you that think Breivik is going to a prison like this, you are very wrong. He will most likely be put in an asylum were they will study and try to reason with him, and since the damage that has been caused to his brain, might never go away, he will be stuck there for his entire life. Wich is better then just killing him right away, we need to study him, so that we'll be prepared wen simmilar things appen again, though i hope they never do.

remember, norwegians don't believe in punishment. it will never bring prisoners back to a "normal" life if you torture them for years. that is the main idea with prisons like these, and there are plenty of them in norway. the first day a prisoner comes to a prison, they start therapy and consulling to prepare them for a functional/legal life after the time is done.

@fysj yes, and the reason people might mock, is that the Norwegian system actually works. For all the harshness of the American system, and the punishment that people seem religiously to believe in both in England and America - their systems have a very low success rate in terms of recidivism. I can understand why that might annoy them, having come to Norway from England, but at the end of the day it does work. So society wins by doing it this way. I fully support it.

This is a new prison, we need more prison cells here in Norway. But its still a prison. The inmates are locked in their cells most of the time. They are not free to walk around outside playing ball and having a piss. We are looking at the bigger picture, the inmates are still human beings, yeah they fucked up, broke some rules. Serving the time, and after served time they go back out, in the Society. Like human beings, not like monsters made by the state, like in the US and A.

I think they've made the prison that nice to treat them like everyone else. If they get treated really shitty, anger might build up and they'll want revenge. I think the prisons in Norway focus on helping people integrate into the society again, and make them not repeat a crime. It's more about helping people get a better life. I think they've succeeded on that, and therefore the low crime rates.

Retribution and deterrence are not the only responsibilities of the prison system, incapacitation and rehabilitation are just as important. Statistic reflect that areas that have adopted these methods such as the case in Norway, experience far more positive results in terms of repeat offending, re-assimilation into society, prison violence/drug use etc. It may seem counter intuitive, but this is the most effective and beneficial way of running a prison system.

The reason i say relative, is because you could technically have all you need to live, but compared to others in the society they are not that great. The police force is not what determines punishment, that is up to the judicial and correctional system. These people still get arrested and removed from society, so protection isn't an issue. And there is nothing to suggest these prisons act as an incentive for criminals to commit crime. In fact, severity of punishment is one of the last factors people take into account before committing an offense and I guarantee the crime rates compared to a traditional prison system are much lower

We have a police force, which is undermanned and is restricted in the weapons they can use while criminals can always find weapons. of course the prisons act as an incentive, people(especially immigrants) will do crazy things when angry and this prison is not going to

I guarantee you that even if you had prisons modeled on Medieval torture chambers, the crime rate would not decrease by a single percent, and would most likely increase. All the objections you have raised are to do with social economic issues and the policing, which has absolutely nothing to do with the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of a prison system. I'm a Justice student man, and I promise you the statistics are in favor of these prisons. Look up any journal article on this.
