The one thing about stand up that bothers me is that you hear the same routines so many times. But David Cross is great no matter what, even though I heard 90% of these jokes before.

I think hes better than hicks in the funny department, he tends to stick more to the jokes as opposed to the philosophy. Hicks was awsome but he spent to much time trying to make the audience think instead of laugh.

Which is why he wasnt as good of a comedian as David Cross, Doug Stanhope George Carlin. If you devote your act to making people think, you destroy your ability to make them laugh which is why hicks was booed so many times. Comedians are Philosophers by nature but their profession is also to make people laugh, Hicks just spent to much time wiht the philosophy and not the comedy. I love bill hicks, i just think there are better comedians out there.

i think you should look at his career chronologically, because he started out mostly comic, not brilliant but hilarious all the same. after about 1993 when he grew his beard and was diagnosed with cancer, he began to get more philosophical than comedic, and that is my favorite Hicks. so it was really just later that he was mostly philosopher/social critic Hicks, closer to death
