  • Coincidentally im using earphone to watch this. :)

  • Hi, I know apertures control light entrance and depth of field, but, I want to know How the light rays enters through the lenses, are they in cone shape, and if so, I would think (but it's not true), that decreasing the aperture, would remove some light rays coming into the sensor, thus reducing the quantity of informarion at the border of the image... how does it works??

  • @kamihakai Its an excellent question, I should probably make a video about it. While total amount of light is indeed decreased, the coverage of the media is the same. (And yes it is cone shaped). Wider apertures allow for more light to enter the lens, but the coverage of the media is the same.

  • How come i'll always turn deaf when i watch this video

  • How come i'll always turn deaf when i watch this video

  • This was a triumph! I mean... thanks for the camera tips.

  • @jellywillreturn i was gonna make that reference. I want you gone dammit! lol

  • struggling to hear you!!! turn the volume up!!

  • @gavlemab Portal nerd and proud of it! :D

  • Whenever I hear "Aperture" I think "Aperture Science"!

  • @airbendingavatar1 :D portal nerd :D

  • now your thinking with portals

  • omg it's like this guy is trying to sound as quiet as he can. i don't want to sound rude, i mean it is a helpful video, but it really annoys..

  • @ 2:30 how do you figure out those numbers?

  • I thought this had something to do with Portal 2

  • very nicely done.......thanks

  • hey everyone! see what u think of my photography please im having trouble getting people to see my work,so go to my channel and click the photography video and tell me what u think.thanks!

  • I recently bought a fully manual camera as I was totally fed up with my Sony point and shoot. However using the supplied manual was tedious and confusing. I stumbled across your tutorials and have to say that they are brilliant. Your explanations are crystal clear and very easy to follow. While I watch I play around with the camera and have become really confident adjusting different settings. My photos have become much better and I never use auto anymore.

  • Finally ! At last I understand depth of focus. Thankyou.

The wall of focus makes it easy for me to remember.

  • Did I got something wrong or did you?

Please check @ 2:17 I thought that aperture equals focal lenght divided with diameter of entrance size, not the iris diameter.

  • @tomislavhecimovic It is the opening that allows light in depending on what type of equipment you are using, if it was the diameter of the lens entrance, aperture would never change.

  • Have you updated the firmware? If you are in Manual Exposure, this should not be happening. Also, check your ISO that it is not on "auto".

  • in 550d, movie mode, manual exposure, and MANUAL focus after hitting the rec botton when i zoom in and out the exposure and shutter speed varies therefore making my shot shot going brighter and darker, tried hitting the lock button * before rec, but doesn seem to do the job,am i doing this the correct way inorder to lock my exposure???pls help!!!

  • Excellent presentation!! the only prob I had was the volume was really low :/

    Thanks!!

  • thank you!!!

  • Great video but it is very hard to hear you Michael. My Macbook Pro's volume is at MAX and so is the Youtube player...

  • Wow, this was VERY helpful. All your videos are helpful! Thank you!

  • hy guyz,i heard a theory which says: if you have an elevated number of F (ex f 32) you can have your pictures not as clearly as you ca get with an medim F number(ex. f 11). is that true or false? please reply to my comment! thanks!

  • @gigiboxa It all depends on the lens. Sometimes the picture doesn't come out very clean if it's wide open or small opening. I have never gone over f/18 and lower than f2.8 on a macro and f/1.8 on a prime lens.

  • This had helped thank you :-)

  • Great video tutorial, thanks!

  • Fantastic tutorial.

  • i have a 50d

    im a canon person though.

great camera if you have the money..

  • If you google: nikon d90 vs canon 50d, you'll find lots of comparisons and reviews. Both, canon and nikon are leaders in sales and quality, it's up to you: be a nikonian or be a canonian.

  • Hope this help, but I've been looking for the one that has the biggest image sensor which in your case the nikon has the biggest one

  • D90 of course eriq, if you have the cash, if not, aimfor d60 or d80.

  • I prefer Nikon's but each to their own.

  • thank you! great tut!

  • Ill have a DVD coming out on this in about 3-4 weeks. Best wishes! M

  • You tell me...how would you get more light into your camera?

  • Thanks Michael, that was VERY well explained!

I will recommend your video lesson to every Photography enthusiast i Know

  • Now, where were you when I did photography in Yr 10!?!? Ok, that was a long time ago, and maybe I've forgotten a lot, but that was a very well done video.

    Thanks.

  • the best mentor and educator i found in the entire you tube for digital photography.thenks a lot micheal..!!

  • Thanks a lot man. Really helped me out!

  • Thank you so much for this great lesson. I've just bought canon 40D and have no clue about the camera. I've no idea about apertures and f stop.

I have questions tho, when I buying a camera lens, should I only buy the kind that have image stabilizer?

I need lens that can take wide angle in close area and I need telephoto lens to take picture of flower or butter fly.

Thank you for any suggestion would greatly appreciated.

  • I highly suggest Canon 40D Crash course by Michael Andrew. (That would be me ;) ) if you click on the link to my blog you will be able to order it. It covers everything a beginner would need to know about photography, lenses and the Canon 40D. Trust me, it is an awesome DVD. :)

  • Hi, I need a answer, When I look through a magnifying glass it turns the image up side down, When I look through a really tiny hole it for some unexplainable reason turns the image upside down too...Why is this???

  • Our eyes have a lens to pull focus, Cameras have lenses to pull focus, BUT how on earth can image be pulled into focus with out a lens, like a pin hole camera or the Moken people who pull visual focus under water by constricting their Iris??? Hypothetically can a camera with a ISO of 2 million be made which solely pulls focus and magnification through a set of Apertures only???

  • Very helpful video!! Thanks for posting!!

  • This is very helpful, thank u very much. And the voice... Why my school teachers didn't have such a voice?

  • this is the first time all of the aperture stuff has actually made sense. thank you so much.

  • this is handyfreakingdandy.

and yes! the smaller the aperture the higher the number, totally backwards :P i'll check out the rest, thanks :)
