Hi, I know apertures control light entrance and depth of field, but, I want to know How the light rays enters through the lenses, are they in cone shape, and if so, I would think (but it's not true), that decreasing the aperture, would remove some light rays coming into the sensor, thus reducing the quantity of informarion at the border of the image... how does it works??
@kamihakai Its an excellent question, I should probably make a video about it. While total amount of light is indeed decreased, the coverage of the media is the same. (And yes it is cone shaped). Wider apertures allow for more light to enter the lens, but the coverage of the media is the same.
hey everyone! see what u think of my photography please im having trouble getting people to see my work,so go to my channel and click the photography video and tell me what u think.thanks!
I recently bought a fully manual camera as I was totally fed up with my Sony point and shoot. However using the supplied manual was tedious and confusing. I stumbled across your tutorials and have to say that they are brilliant. Your explanations are crystal clear and very easy to follow. While I watch I play around with the camera and have become really confident adjusting different settings. My photos have become much better and I never use auto anymore.
@tomislavhecimovic It is the opening that allows light in depending on what type of equipment you are using, if it was the diameter of the lens entrance, aperture would never change.
in 550d, movie mode, manual exposure, and MANUAL focus after hitting the rec botton when i zoom in and out the exposure and shutter speed varies therefore making my shot shot going brighter and darker, tried hitting the lock button * before rec, but doesn seem to do the job,am i doing this the correct way inorder to lock my exposure???pls help!!!
hy guyz,i heard a theory which says: if you have an elevated number of F (ex f 32) you can have your pictures not as clearly as you ca get with an medim F number(ex. f 11). is that true or false? please reply to my comment! thanks!
@gigiboxa It all depends on the lens. Sometimes the picture doesn't come out very clean if it's wide open or small opening. I have never gone over f/18 and lower than f2.8 on a macro and f/1.8 on a prime lens.
Hello :) Thank you for your help! I have a Canon Rebel XSi and Im trying to teach myself how to ue this wonderful camera. I am trying to bring picture's that I have taken..bring them closier/crop out what I dont want in the picture...and can't seen to find the "save as" button so I may go to the store and have copies made of the exact close up picture I have fixed :) Could you please help me...Than you for your time :)
If you google: nikon d90 vs canon 50d, you'll find lots of comparisons and reviews. Both, canon and nikon are leaders in sales and quality, it's up to you: be a nikonian or be a canonian.
Excellent video tutorial on apertures and their effects. This is my first video of yours that I've viewed. I'll be sending links to friends to this to help friends and family understand how to use their cameras.
I could kiss you ... THANK YOU ... your are the first teacher that I can relate to ... I have had such a hard time understanding depth of field for quit some time, the ruler is genius. Simply Michael you are an outstanding teacher and I can learn from you.. Thank you so much
This is great!the videos are so wonderful!now i have been watching them and reading my manuals. There is one thing i am having problems with!i can take great photos at night yet i can not seem to get pictures at night of fireworks or pumpkins lit up it always is bright!!what about taking pictures of the stars?
Now, where were you when I did photography in Yr 10!?!? Ok, that was a long time ago, and maybe I've forgotten a lot, but that was a very well done video.
I highly suggest Canon 40D Crash course by Michael Andrew. (That would be me ;) ) if you click on the link to my blog you will be able to order it. It covers everything a beginner would need to know about photography, lenses and the Canon 40D. Trust me, it is an awesome DVD. :)
Hi, I need a answer, When I look through a magnifying glass it turns the image up side down, When I look through a really tiny hole it for some unexplainable reason turns the image upside down too...Why is this???
Our eyes have a lens to pull focus, Cameras have lenses to pull focus, BUT how on earth can image be pulled into focus with out a lens, like a pin hole camera or the Moken people who pull visual focus under water by constricting their Iris??? Hypothetically can a camera with a ISO of 2 million be made which solely pulls focus and magnification through a set of Apertures only???
Coincidentally im using earphone to watch this. :)

Please check @ 2:17 I thought that aperture equals focal lenght divided with diameter of entrance size, not the iris diameter.

Have you updated the firmware? If you are in Manual Exposure, this should not be happening. Also, check your ISO that it is not on "auto".

Thank you so much for this great lesson. I've just bought canon 40D and have no clue about the camera. I've no idea about apertures and f stop.
I have questions tho, when I buying a camera lens, should I only buy the kind that have image stabilizer?
I need lens that can take wide angle in close area and I need telephoto lens to take picture of flower or butter fly.
Thank you for any suggestion would greatly appreciated.
