Unfortunately RKO was going under at the time whichmeant production had very little money for the affect. I myself, a Verne fan, would love to see something properly done with technology of today (even if the science behind it is a bit flawed, its still great fun to read.) Be a great steampunk film to try.
@superstarjonesbros Yes, Space Mountain: "De La Terre a La Lune" in Disneyland Paris was based off of Jules Verne's original novel, "From the Earth to the Moon". The current "Mission 2" version of the ride has kind of separated from the previous theme a bit. The concept was brilliant of them to use though, in my opinion.
In this movie the only thing faithful to the original novel it's only the name of Jules Verne. what a missed chance with great actors like Cotten and Sanders!
I saw this late 50's as a kid, they never show it on TV, thanks for the post I'll watch it later and see how it compares to 50+ years of memory. I remember being enchanted with it as a 7 year old.
