I'm from Mexico City, and everytime I go to Atlanta, I just take Marta from airport to Chamblee. Walk 10 minutes, and I'm in my friend's house. If they go to pick me up at the aiport, they will make 1 hour from Chamblee to airport, and 1 hour back. That means 2 hours VS. 30 minutes.
is marta really going away because of budget cuts??? cuz i'm planning on taking it next summer to go to ga state univserity. If it's not then can someone tell me how to use it? i'v only seen it in the movies where people put coins in the machine, or do theey use tickets now?? how does it all work?
Marta is not as bad as people make it out to be, yes marta made some cuts and are going up on the weeky, and 30 day passes but thats because the state of Georgia dose not help out with money that marta needs. I have been to other big cities and trust me marta is better than most.
Does anyone know if MARTA is planning on adding additional transit lines to the system in the future? And if so, what is the construction time frame? I would love to see more lines for MARTA!
Does anyone know If marta is planning on adding additional transit lines to the system in the future? And if so, what is the time frame for construction? I would love to see more transit lines for ATlanta.
I am going to be riding MARTA when the AMS's 90th Annual Meeting comes to Atlanta from January 17th to the 22nd. I am going to be coming from Indian Creek Station.
'weatherscience': I'd agree unless it's deteriorated very recently. And parking at Sandy Springs for $3 per day (in '06) while flying out of Hartsfield was such a convenience.
As long as you are inside of I-285, the rail system is pretty effective...espeically during rush hour. but the rail really needs to be expanded considerably outside of I-285, but Cobb, Gwinnette and Clayton counties fought tooth and nail to keep MARTA out...started their own county-based bus systems. Yet those same county residents complain about he traffic. we have some odd social politics in this city. Other than that Atlanta's great. Dragon*Con rocks.
Hey, you know what, you're wrong. You basically say that if you aren't poor- you should drive. Thats a failed mentality that has fueled America's car culture for the past 50 years and led to the degredation of America's public transit infastructure. Just because its public doesn't make it "for those other people" - Public transport, and the infastructure around it, is infastructure that can save us from driving, take cars off roads, speed up commute times, and has many economic benefits.
MARTA is pretty good. I felt pretty safe and it was clean. I have only had a few reliability issues. I can say it is a Hell of a lot cleaner than "The T" in Boston.
MARTA's alrite. i mean its really clean and safe but its also really unreliable. it gets you to where ur going but you allmost always have to take a bus and a train. i use it to get to skool everyday. a trip that in a car would take about 15 minutes takes an hour and a half on marta. I think it would be a lot better if they would expand the rail. unfortunately due to major budget problems that expansion has come to a halt. :[\\
@ktaristocrat you also have to look into the cause of the budget problems. Your state as well as neighboring counties who's residents use the system don't want to pay for it. The original planned Expansion projects to hapevile, the atlantic station, and emory university have never became final with Marta's board of directors. But in the near future (not specified when) they may be LRTs or BRTs.
i tell all of yall the best subways in the usa is atl Marta d.c. Metro L.A. Metro Baltimore Mta Miami Metro all the other subaway systems are all dirty the stations look like crap like nyc mta chicago boston nyc mta should clean their trains and remodel their stations
Just got back from Atlanta. I didn't need a rental car, thanks solely to MARTA. MARTA is the best thing since sliced bread. It took me everywhere I needed to go, the trains run frequently, it is cheap, and the stations are visually very interesting and clean -- and it goes to the airport. Why oh why can't the NY Subway go to La Guardia and Kennedy? This was my first time using MARTA and I am now a major fan of this system. AND NYC could learn a thing or two from this system.
I agree, even though NYC has one of the largest systems in the world. Chicago and NYC have had there airports and train systems for around the same length of time. If Chicago managed to run a line to Midway (city's version of La Guardia) and O'Hare then there is no excuse. This may be one of the reasons why Chicago won the 2016 USA Olympic bid. Atlanta having a line to it's airport also helped landing of the 96 games.
I'm going to Atlanta for vacation next week, and I'll be sure to ride the MARTA as much as I can. Besides DC, it looks like one of the nicest train systems I've seen. The map makes sense, the trains look clean, and the stations look well lit. Plus it looks like the train can take us to all of the parts of the city we want to see.
Not just Atlanta, quite a few cities have light rail service that only serves the city and not the neighboring suburbs. A lot of people in this country spend hours in their cars because transit systems are just a handfull of miles short of serving a nearby community. Too much politics involved.
same in chicago the longest u gotta wait on a bus or train is ten minutes and the suburban buses and commuter trains u can get any where anytime city, suburban, and the whole chicagoland area witch compromises northeast illinois, southeast wisconson, northwest indiana, southwest michigan thats how extensive the mass transit is here.
Marta trains really do not go to many places. It is old, outdated and needed to expand 15 years ago. Now it is pretty much useless to most who live here.
I fly into Atlanta in the morning. Catch the train to Buckhead/Peachtree. Walk two blocks to the office. Have everything I need within a 10 minute walk. Marta makes Atlanta one of the few cities in North America where I don't need a car, and that means a lot to me!
@dsmith1962 I am very glad to see this said by someone. I myself have been wondering about relocating to the Atlanta area, and due to a disability, cannot have a drivers license. Maybe living around there or at least kind of close to the DT area there would not matter that I didn't drive? Public transit does indeed make good economical and environmental sense to me too.
Don't forget that Marta is a system that is almost 100 years younger than the first CTA line ever built and it incorporates technology that had not been dreamed of back then. It is sad but true that passengers of Marta seem to apprieciate their trains more than some rogue riders of CTA. But I will say CTA is better now than it ha been.

@slamnxgirlxjulie No, it's not. It's just increasing the fares. I think it's $2.00 for one trip.
