I wonder how Ivor Bolton manages to make a regular big opera house orchestra sound so stylish and authentic. I mean, that applies to his other Baroque opera productions at the Bavarian State Opera, like the Kasarova Orphee and the Roschmann Rodelinda. Too bad this is not available on DVD... It looks to me that I'll never be able to see David Daniels' Nerone...
I have to agree with you, vitellia. In better times Bolton was a regular in Florence and he always managed to evoke gorgeous sounds from the MMF orchestra.
When i first heard that this final duet was not in fact written by Monteverdi I was shocked, horrified and upset. But does it actually matter. does it really matter if it moves us today who wrote it.
I'm in two minds and feel uncomfortable about it, anybody like to join in the discussion?
I don't think the original composer of the duet would mind, really. After all, had it not been included in Monteverdi's opera, it'd probably not be playing still today. :o) The practice of borrowing music was so prevalent in those days (Vivaldi's Bajazet used a lot of music of other composers, and even Rossini used 3 numbers from another composer in his original version of Cenerentola more than a century later).
May I say how hilarious to call this angelic. Do any of you even know who poppea and Nero were. This like most are pretty and meaningless. Fluff

Who cares who wrote it !! it is soooo beautiful. Try Jaroussky/Rial's version. Better, I think.

Antonacci is NOT out of "pitch": I own the complete recording and both she and Daniels are near perfection.

You do have to admitt that with Nero, Seneca, Drussila and Poppea it was for the first time that historic persons where put " on stage".

Antonacci is out of pitch.
David Daniels is perfect, as usual.

No, his voice is rather lower and more contralto-ish nowadays.

Nice, but not as good my recording (Arleen Auger as Poppea, I forget who as Nero). I'll upload that one of these days.

The original composer is said to be Benedetto Ferrari. (Buy the CD with his "Sansone" by Alan Curtis and Il Complesso Barocco for more information;)
