Lots of lovely girls named "Linda" in the 60's decade. Forget about the famous ones---plenty of beauties who were sung to by Jan and Dean! Linda didn't have to be famous and/or be considered a "beauty" --beauty is in the eye of the beholder--to be sung to as in this song!
Always wondered if Paul ever did a version of this just for grins. It must have been novel to have been married to a woman who had 3 (counting both versions of this and "My Love") hit records written about her.
OMG.....I remember many many years ago the local radio station was having a contest...they played this song and the first caller that got the artist right won 4 free tickets to the NY State Fair...I wasnt the first caller but I WAS THE FIRST ONE to get the answer right..cant believe how many dummies said The Beach Boys...by the way..the NY State Fair was totally amazing !!!!!! : )
Jan & Dean rocked the early 60's. Linda was a perfect example of their tight harmonies. I saw Dean last year 2009 with a Jan & Dean surf tribute band and he still had it.
The song was actually written when Lawrence was in the service during World War II, taking its name from the then five-year-old daughter of his attorney, Lee Eastman. (His daughter was Linda Eastman, future first wife of the Beatle Paul McCartney.)
Linda is a Latin word meaning beautiful. Interestingly this song was written back in the 1940s for a little girl named Linda Eastman. Linda grew up to become Linda McCartney.
Their sounds are similar, but it didn't seem to bother either of the groups. They were all friends, even performing together on "Barbara Ann". I loved em both and still do.
Not a bad song????? It's a classic to me. Jan & Dean had a sound and style that no one could ever copy. I love the beginning. Nothings better than hearing comments and sounds before the song starts. RIP Jan.
We saw Jan and Dean in the early 90s at Great Adventure in NJ. They are my wife's favorite group. She was only born in '66 but saw the movie DEAD MANS CURVE and fell in love with them and their music. I was lucky enough to have had the pleasure of taking her to see J&D and we got to meet Jan. Believe it or not when they did this song in concert, Dean said "This song sucks!" We still love their music and miss Jan very much. Long live J&D's music.
I think that it may have actually been Eastman herself who said that the song referred to her. Alas, it was a long time ago, but she was quite well known due to her father's wealth, and she did appear in those appropriate showbiz/gossip columns so she was quite well known.
Yes. J&D's 1963 version of the Hoagy Carmichael song was indeed about the future first (and revered) Mrs. Paul McCartney. Linda Eastman (McCartney) and J&D were good friends.
The song was written by Jack Lawrence, who died March 15th at 96. His attorney was Linda Eastman's father, and it really was written for her (in 1946). She was six-years-old at the time. Many recording artists have covered this son. BTW, Jack Lawrence also penned "All or Nothing" and :If I Didn't Care."
The title of this song is my name, but it's spelled Lynda...not the comman spelling (Linda). When someone asks me what is your name, I tell them it's with a Y and they think the Y is at the end which would be Lindy.
Currently having a long distant relationship with a lady named Linda. Just the way I feel about her. Jan & Dean have been a favorite of mine since the 60,s. This is not their best song, but it is good, great video.
Just listen to the begining of the song. I really do "hate my name" I wanted a cool name like Lauren or Rachael by no, i got stuck with this one. i really do like the song. I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area so I'm a "Surfer" girl at heart.
I came along a generation after Jan and Dean were popular, but when I was a teenager, I discovered them and I have been a fan ever since. Theirs was a sunny and then stormy story...And their music is crisp and clean. Love it still!
@ventues97 I grew up in Cali when Surf Music was out. Were the Ventures a group of three or four or were they a complete band? I saw one video when there were three or four members but hear an orchestra in all of their songs.
Love it!! Jan and Dean were phenomenal. What would the Sixties have been without them. All their songs still hold up; so glad to be able to hear this one again after all these decades. Great!
This song was originally a hit in 1947 for Buddy Clark. It was written for a then 4 year old girl named Linda Eastman who would grow up to marry Paul McCartney!!

It's a song (early 1963) about Linda Eastman to become Mrs. Paul McCartney a few years later (March 12, 1969)

I think Jan and dean were trying to find their place in music here by experimentation. It doesn't seem to be working as well as they wanted.

Linda is not a spanish name in fact it is not derived from spain. LINDO is NOT the same as LINDA

@Jalyn319 It is Spanish. Lindo is the masculine form for pretty or beautiful and Linda is the feminine form.

Great, this song was composed to Linda Eastman (Linda McCartney)when she was five years old. The song was a payment for a debt with Linda's father.

"Linda" is a fine name for a fine song.
It's a Spanish name, you know. The meaning of it translates as "beautiful."
Another example of the use of such a word in a song is the classic Mexican song MI CELITO LINDO (My Beautiful Little Heaven).

I love Jan & Dean!
Linda is a classic J&D song!
They belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Jan & Dean created and started so much that became the steps for others to follow!
The Beach Boys were a part of the Jan & Dean sound.
It did not stop there.
By the way, Jan & Dean had a LOT of hit songs of their own!
Hall of Fame?
NO QUESTION!
