well it depends how you use the flahses, i know a portrait photographer who does lots of on location photos, hes proffesioanl, worked for top mags and stuff, he has 3 nikon sb-600s, 2 sb800s and 3 sb-900s. depedns what photography you do really

@Kinneballer36 well, it's all pro gear. over a year later everything still works just fine...though i don't tend to throw it, i think.

i do own a 24-70. it's a fine lens, but i still prefer more shallow depth of field (f1.4) in more of my lenses. though, if i couldn't only bring ONE lens then it would probably be the 24-70

Yup, but the preflash that triggers from d700 (and d300) appears in the exposure. It's slight, but it's there. Try shooting in a mirror and you'll see it in the photo. I used that feature all the time when i don't have the su800 though

D700 has an on bord flash, witch You can use as a comander to triger any of camera flash-p to 3 or 4 of them I think. Maybe You knew that i don't know.

@CrazyJimKU yes, as does many of the nikon bodies including the d90 and d300(s). however, it has a very annoying preflash that fires to trigger the other flashes, which even if is set to not show up in the exposure...does. so, i had the extra money and went for the ir trigger as it removes the preflash factor completely. i believe it has a better range too...though still line of site.
