just realize that this was before 2 world war... people went to this film and though: it will never happen again....its good film and it was horible but now is a new world...we dont have to worried about wars....and it just happend...
I agree I just finished it for a project in highschool and im a freshman we dont like to read but this book changed my whole way I feel towards books.(its gold)
No Glory for heroes is an award winning short film that looks the psychological affects ww1 had on soldiers and how it would affect many for the rest of their lives!!
This flick was a truly staggering achievement for it's time (circa 1929, a period just before the Crash that coincided with the dawn of the ascendency of technology making a soundtrack possible, consigning the silent movie to the annals of history). If the acting seems a bit stilted and melodramatic, well, it's worth keeping in mind that with the addiition of a soundtrack, the motion picture industry was in the midst of reinventing itself; many silent screen stars didn't make the transition to
This flick was a staggering achievement in it's time (circa 1929, which saw — and retains a strong sense of the horror and, ultimately, the futility of mankind's greatest following
Universal Pictures' Greatest Achievements: All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) Psycho (1960) Spartacus (1960) To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) Jaws (1975) National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) The Deer Hunter (1978) The Blues Brothers (1980) E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (1982) Back to the Future (1985) Out of Africa (1985) Backdraft (1991) Jurassic Park (1993) Schindler's List (1993) Apollo 13 (1995) The Mummy (1999) A Beautiful Mind (2001) Seabiscuit (2003) Ray (2004) King Kong (2005)
@CaesarRedsox There's is no doubt that Universal is responsible for all the first horror/monster movies, and that they were all groundbreaking achievements, but I just think the movies that I mentioned were all a little more poignant. All the horror/monster movies are DEFINITELY in the top 50.
@cinemapsycho91 I can agree with your statement, but like you mentioned, theres no denying their lasting impact in the world of horror films. Anyways, I haven't seen All Quiet on The Western Front(original). I've only seen the late 70's remake, which I quite enjoyed.
@cinemapsycho91 I catched the original flick on the TCM channel the otherday and I gotta say, this is probably as close to a real representation of war on film. I love the way it was shot, almost had a documentary like feel with the combat scenes. I thought some acting was a bit stiff in some parts, but it was hauntingly good!!!!
@CaesarRedsox Glad you liked it!!! Definitely agree with you, but as far as the acting goes, it was the early 1930's, and film was slowly moving away from the silent film era of the 1920's, and actor/actress's performances weren't really getting recognized. It was Universal Pictures' first film to win for Best Picture.
@cinemapsycho91 Thats the impression I was getting through out the film. I think this movie might beat out The Thin Red Line as my all-time favorite war epic lol.
i'm 14 and i gotta say...this film is pretty impressive, and i didn't get bored ones, i would top this as the second best old film, my first is King Kong from the 30's
actually, this was the first "Best Picture" in history, because the one's before it were "Best Picture Production", and "Best Picture [something else]", 1930 was the first time the category was just called "Best Picture"
Second best war movie i have ever seen. The best imo is Full Metal Jacket. Thanks imdb top 250. I would never have seen it if the list never had existed!
Never able to fully lift himself from the shadow of his tyrannical father, Julius "Carl Junior" Laemmle was still able to bring this personal project to fruition....at the tender age of 21. The film garnered Universal it's first Oscar for best picture....that honor should have gone directly to "Junior".but Carl Sr. accepted the Oscar on behalf of his company Universal Pictures. Junior went on to produce many films during his short reign as Universals production chief...most beloved his monsters
I read some exerts from the book and watched part of the movie in my humanities class. I finished the rest of it on YouTube since i don't own. But I really enjoyed the movie and judging from all the comments i believe everyone else here does as well. And it also seems like we all understand the outlying meaning for what was intended by the film. A message about war and what it does to a human being mentally and physically.
I agree that this is one of the best war films ever made. I think it depicts what was going on at that paticular point in history. It also reveals how far along we have came in technology but how the same ideals of divide and conquer still exidt and probably wont change any time soon.
before i saw the movie i was all like patriotic and wanting to join the military like the guys were in the begining and stuff but after i saw the movie i was like not so eager to join and i didnt see war being action i just saw war as being bullshit

One of the movies with an anti-war message in it. Probably hated by republicans. (rimshot, cheap one)

@CaesarRedsox Yes, you have to check out the 1930's version. It's early film-making at it's very best.
