@Bogmire11 yes it is called Dormancy, you can try to skip dormancy but your plant will be less strong and will have a shorter lifespan. You may think your plant is dead but it is most likely dormant. You do not feed it bugs dormancy but you still keep the soil moist. There is a lot about dormancy and not enough room here to tell you, I suggest googling it :)
I use my old fish tank with a fluorescent light. Didn't want another fish so I got a fly trap. I found a seller on ebay. It only had 3 good traps and 2 that were dying. I trimmed it up and kept it up with distilled water and the light set on a timer for the proper amount of light. Within a few weeks the plant had really took off. Growing new and larger traps. Unfortunately, a month later, I had to put it in dormancy(December). Will take it out in March.
@masterquadbiker Wow, it's been a while since I had posted that. But I have three plants now, one of them is the original plant I started with. I use an aquarium fluorescent bulb. And like i said two years ago...use the timer to simulate day/night cycle...this includes daylight savings time when the days get shorter. Once they start getting less daylight, it should get them ready for dormancy. And in November I put them in a ziplock bag, seal it, and put them in the bottom of the fridge
@SgtGarand ah ok thanks ill keep that in mind, i have a desk lamp and i could get a compact florescent light for it and just keep it over my VFT for so many hours a day...would that work ?
I do have a question. It is not humid where I live (Oregon), and we don't get much rain during the summer. Can I keep the plant outside in its plastic container (with air holes) to keep the moisture in? And rain water is hard to find in stores around here. Is there a way to "purify" regular water to equal rain water?
and as for water,i dont worry about rain water but here in lousiana we have a place that distills water so it is really cheap at wallmart .68 CENT for a gallon jug
yea one day i walked in wallmart looking for distilled water because my rain water was running low and you should have seen people staring at me i got all the jugs i could hold!
thanks that was actually very halpful..... but i have a question are those new power saving spiral bulbs ok for the plant because iv had my VFT for about 2 weeks and the new VET heads are dying and my big heads are fine im so cunfusd please help.

hey expert village doesnt kno wht they are saying most of the time, all there recording videos are shit.
Try a 200 Watt MH lamp about a yard off the plants.
They will soon develop that coveted deep red color on the entire plant. just make sure you keep them from drying out.

you will have to see where it grows best but for the water situation just look at the video on watering a venus fly trap
