You are welcome. Their story continues through their generations. Nate Saint's grandson is now continuing the work, which means alot in the structure of the Waodani/Acua culture. When in Denver, Colorado recently, I saw a teen Bible training center dedicated to Jim Elliot. None of those 5 men would have thought this, in 2009. The Lord is working in this one area from 1956 to 2009. That is a powerful proof of an almighty God. A human being could not, even in all kindness, keep that going.
I have long thought, as a single woman, that I would have a gun for self-defense. I always have. But after this movie, I have started to wonder if I should not. There was also a case recently of a woman held hostage who witnessed to her captor, through rape and beatings. But he was saved. It is a decision which is difficult. To take another life or not, as in this situation, they could have fired directly into a person and did not.
Self-defense is our first reaction. I talked to my father about it. It is a tearing question, for certain. They were 5 very fit young men, able to fight and kill in their own defense. Jim Elliot said, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." He meant this, through WW2 and until the day he died on the sandbar with the others.
Another is "love your brother" but in this, which many videos do not show, is they were spending time together in laughter, friendship, before the killing. A Waodani person lied, about an incident with one of the Waodani girls, for their own purpose, that led to the "false revenge" killing of the missionaries, who were innocent. To have kids' fathers speared, the young son was accepted in a familiar manner into the tribe, since the other kids all had their own fathers speared, like a brother.
From such a tragic beginning comes these powerful spiritual lessons of life, for those who experienced it first hand, and now for us.
A thought: forgiveness to me is a form of self sacrifice - imo the highest of all human offerings - because it requires that a person surrender every natural instinct and defensive mechanism he or she possesses in order to live in enlightenment while walking side by side with one's God.
Jesus both forgave and sacrificed himself so that this enlightenment could be at hand for us all. To conduct oneself in this manner is truly godly. I understand why you are so deeply drawn to this story.

I like how, in the start, you had Mincaye recalling the events of the killings. Very moving to see his feelings about it.

I admire your thinking in your comment, River. "Turn the other cheek" do you think?
