I count 4. Fat, Fate, Father, Idea. I think the last one is not properly called a sound of A, because it won't make that schwa sound as a stressed vowel. So there are properly three sounds of A.
Well if they transition the consonants the way I tell them to, it makes it alot easier for them.
The thing about the English Language is that no grammarian agrees 100% with another.
It's imperfect, in constant evolution, the most live language today, constantly changing. The way you speak English today will not be spoken 150 years from now.
Grammarians and linguists don't even agree on the amount of sounds in the english language.
