You keep saying control of "pitch", but wouldn't you need control of "tempo" to adjust the speed? Wouldn't pitch be for if the notes were too high or low?
@ceXhc When it comes to turntables, changing pitch will change the tempo, so it really doesn't matter which term he uses. But you are right that tempo is what's being focused on.
Excellent Words from Ellaskins. I've been DJing since 1979, and mixing old vinyl from this era was a nightmare. The BPMs were up and down more times than a whores knickers! I remember the late James Hamilton of Record Mirror reviewing dance tracks and listing the BPMs, and they went like this.. 112 Intro - 113 - 115 Break - 112 - 111 Outro!!! And you think Im joking!!!!! lol Loved this video!
@steveygee1 Eh? Brothers Johnson played on alot of stuff you heard before they came out with own shh. James Brown from the 1970's is funky but only a few tracks are actually USABLE in a nightclub, unless you have a crowd that can really get into it. I had one girl about, late 20's when I playing stuff like this and she snipped (It sounds a family reunion...)
That is the type of mixing i'm definitly into. And go mad about very often because it is so hard to do. But when it is well done (about 8 Bars or more) it is just great.
This is beautiful! Mixing is an art form with vinyl non digitised music! I am here in Florida and even in Miami the DJs today rarely use vinyl/analog but there are a few who specialise! You can't fake skills like that! Thank you for showing the Level 42 track YES IT IS PURE FUNK Johnson and King basslines needed to be married YOU R A VINYL SURGEON -RESECTION AND ANASTOMOSIS teaching the young ppl about the optimum mixing windows Mark and Larry cant be mad at this artful skillful statement
umm even though it was produced by real musicians... METRONOME!?!? I have a non-electronic one that works perfectly fine, so i dont see why they aren't on beat.
they are on beat. It's just not to the milli second perfect like electronic music... THis difference adds up over a few bars and suddenly your beats dont match
U ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT A DJ OR A SOUND ENGINEER. Its a well known fact that Funk and Disco tracks are off beat. Mainly because they weren't produced with the precision of computers and more advanced gear. The bars are slightly off and get worse gradually.
@Razunitx True, to a point... Stevie Wonder pioneered much of the analog seq and stuff, his shit tends to stay on beat much longer. Towards the late 70's drum machines started being used of course, but it wasn't until the TR-808 that changed EVERYTHING.
haha...Level 42..Funk!..haha...good video though...I mix a lot of old school funk and I ride the pitch like crazy...damn drummers back in the day cant keep up...I got an old school soul/funk mix up on my page and in my description I say about this very point..lol...ill post the first part of the mix as a video response.
Hi mate, love the videos and the hats; quick question; In this video I can see the speaker set up next to the left turntable, how do you prevent this being a feedback issue?
because the turntable doesn't pick up audio"? honestly your twisting my melon man, what do you mean? I appreciate you responding, but can you explain a little more please? My turntables pick up the vibration of my sound system and so I can't turn it up too loud or I get the loop from hell, any help or advice with this would be great. Please. Mad props to the guy in the video, do you do parties!?
Yeah and thats why (in my opinion) mixing real funk (as opposed to cutting) is far more difficult and aquires a lot more skill than all the "machined" stuff. Even more so with the real funky stuff from 65-76. Thank you !
Hey bro go0dstuff....knowledge and practise creates awesome sounds...thanx 4 ur video...I will be able to master it now...lol need to get some equipment.
Hi Ellaskins. I'm assuming that you already know this, but funk wasn't the only tempo-fluctuating dance music. A large amount of 70s disco was also NOT made with drum machines, so same issue. This can be used to advantage, however, as in the case where a track ends 5 or 6 BPM faster than it began. In this case, you can mix into a slightly faster track with both being about the same pitch deviation (such as 0%) so that both sound pretty much the way that they were recorded. Good job, and enjoy!
At 7:16 I understand you cut out track A 1/2 bar from the end because the vocals came in early. But I feel robbed that 1/2 bar from that track. In other words, IMHO the second try at 8:15 was better. Your explanation is spot on! Keep doing a great job!
As an Old-school funk musician (bass at that), much respect. Always good to understand the origin of any style of music. Continue to Funk on the 1 ...
THANK GOD, it's nice see that someone else understand the music of the pass and know that you really have too know and listen too the music of the pass in order too mix with it. I'm using my computer too try and mix some of the old skool funk and it's driving alittle crazy, because I don't have the full dj program too hook up my turntables, so I am finding it very hard too do sometimes. I think it's the lack of control. Keep up the good work.
Good tutorial, however I disagree in that the second mix was more "funktified" and it sounded better and smoother. But it's just my opinion. good stuff man, nothing beats funk not now not ever. "Keep on funkin"
It is very important to know your tunes all the way through. Especially with the older stuff. Know where the break comes in and how long you have to mix. Very cool man.
have a listen some of my mixes .... bits of pink floyd and allsorts thrown in here an there....gonna try and do a funk one .....now where is that box of records .................
As a DJ I don't rate u at all, but as entertainment, u're Ace. Does anyone agree, First mix stunk quite honestly, third mix "sounded" better, just listen! + Rip tracks into Ableton and Warp every beat so it is consistent, sorted.
I put in inverted commas because I thought that would be a good way to show that I was commenting on human drummers as opposed to a drum machine or programmer( who, although human , uses synthetic timing) also the rest of my comment tends to lean you toward that direction of understanding .
You also stated that you " hate DJ's " oh dear ! , how can you possibly apply such a term in such a broad and generalized way I will never understand ... its like saying you 'hate ' all vegetables....
Actually, I hate everything mainstream. Yes I know, back to the early 70S, Funk WAS mainstream but back then, there was hardly any crap in music, so mainstream was not as pejorative as it is now... As extreme as it may sound, I am one of those people who think good music died at the end of the 70S... Hence me hating DJs and all the Techno/Rap stuff. :-)
And in order to confuse you more, I dig Kraftwerk, Klaus Schultze and Tangerine Dream!
Such a strong word 'hate'!!..I'm not fond of the mainstream myself ....I'm Far from confused though, I understand where you are coming from a little more now .Definitely was a lot of good music about in the 70's ,and before!! , but I don't think good music died at this point...
A good tune is a good tune! whether it be Snoop Dogg , Jethro Tull , Steve Hillage or The Orb .....
Yes I know! Do you know this English band called The Groove Connection?
BTW, the two tunes you used are late 70s Funk. I am into older school than that ;-) Think The Mighty Imperials, Dennis Coffey, Betty Davis or, of course, the Godfather!
Anyway, from a pedagogical point of view, your videos are ace! I destine myself to teaching and I hope I will be able to pass on my ideas as clearly as you do. There are so many poseurs on YT, it's great to see ppl like you :-)
this is a good vid another vid to check out is one called the 45 king it really good the dj doesnot have funk but breaks beats but the way the dj mixes is the way ellaskins discribes.
I'm generally pretty accepting of people who aren't too familiar with some kinds of music, but any DJ who doesn't know what "funk" is should just give their kit away. Such a huge influence on what's around today and a huge part of music history, there's really no excuse for not knowing it. Great video though, J. I mix with a LOT of funk and this is a big help.

There are so many poseurs on YT, it's great to see ppl like you :-)
G'night!

Very informative tutorial. I really liked the introduction about the history of the music before going into the technical stuff. This was great!

I love funk!
So many young DJs now don't realise what it was like for those of us who taught ourselves to mix the old school stuff on dodgy belt drive decks!
