  • Maximim RESPECT for giving some REAL history. 2 AWESOME tracks too! Nice one!

  • Does he live in a Castle??

  • this guy needs to stop talking and fucking spin already!!!! shit!

All this dude does is talk talk talk talk talk talk in every single one of his videos. Your voice is fucking boring.

  • @phishfan08

That's what a tutorial is, man. Tutorials that have long explanations with tons of information are the best tutorials you can get.

In my opinion you should stop bitching and appreciate the information this man bestows upon us.

  • Ohhhhh, so those things that lets light in my house is a WINDOW!

  • get the funk outta mah face!

  • Comment removed

  • @ogdjdeadlyb He knows, SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE

  • Ha, I love the way he kept the bit in where he goes "ooh shit" at 4:00 :)

  • Just thought I would let you know "Your Love Is On The One" 12' by Lakeside mixes perfect with the break in "Get The Funk Outta My Face"

  • Your tutorials are great!

  • Skip to 4:08 so you do have to sit thru his history class -__-'

  • This is not Funk...tihs is Fu(N)cking Shit men :-(((

  • boring!!! hurry up and mix!!

  • It's easier just to scratch it in on the breaks

  • @djfuvideo2: YEAH !

That's the way they used to do it, back in those days !

    Just like GMF did !^^

  • @SLIMKUTT yeah man thats the only way to mix funk, don't let house DJs tell you otherwise lol

  • Brothers Johnson are super sweet.

  • You keep saying control of "pitch", but wouldn't you need control of "tempo" to adjust the speed? Wouldn't pitch be for if the notes were too high or low?

  • @ceXhc When it comes to turntables, changing pitch will change the tempo, so it really doesn't matter which term he uses. But you are right that tempo is what's being focused on.

  • @beat80cj Cool, thanks. Didn't know that.

  • J how many vinyl do you have in your collection? :D

  • It's not that hard.

All you gotta do is mix on beat.

  • if u dnt knw wat funk is

    KILL YOSELF

  • Excellent Words from Ellaskins. I've been DJing since 1979, and mixing old vinyl from this era was a nightmare. The BPMs were up and down more times than a whores knickers! I remember the late James Hamilton of Record Mirror reviewing dance tracks and listing the BPMs, and they went like this.. 112 Intro - 113 - 115 Break - 112 - 111 Outro!!! And you think Im joking!!!!! lol Loved this video!

  • get some real JB's deep original funk!! this is too gay and disco

  • @steveygee1 Eh? Brothers Johnson played on alot of stuff you heard before they came out with own shh. James Brown from the 1970's is funky but only a few tracks are actually USABLE in a nightclub, unless you have a crowd that can really get into it. I had one girl about, late 20's when I playing stuff like this and she snipped (It sounds a family reunion...)

  • ever drink baileys from a shoe

  • Mate, love your teaching style, you honest and a great teacher!!!!

  • LEVEL 42!!!

  • the funk is a living creature about the size of a medicine ball but covered in teets, came from another planet and landed on bootsy collins's house

  • wanna go to a club were people wee on each other?

  • lol

  • hahaha boosh is amazing. "just face it Tony, we're lost." "ooooh we aint lost, im just a bit cloudy" "Tony you Cleff!!! we're lost!!!!"

  • lol..where's that..?

  • I'm scratchin my head saying "who DOESNT know what funk is" Great Tutor, very professional

  • well what ya gonna do

  • @HamburgerTrain11

I got a pocket full of rubbers and my homeboys do too, lol.

  • That is the type of mixing i'm definitly into. And go mad about very often because it is so hard to do. But when it is well done (about 8 Bars or more) it is just great.

  • Thank you for this, Great help... many thanks

  • not goo²d

  • This is beautiful! Mixing is an art form with vinyl non digitised music! I am here in Florida and even in Miami the DJs today rarely use vinyl/analog but there are a few who specialise! You can't fake skills like that! Thank you for showing the Level 42 track YES IT IS PURE FUNK Johnson and King basslines needed to be married YOU R A VINYL SURGEON -RESECTION AND ANASTOMOSIS teaching the young ppl about the optimum mixing windows Mark and Larry cant be mad at this artful skillful statement

  • umm even though it was produced by real musicians... METRONOME!?!? I have a non-electronic one that works perfectly fine, so i dont see why they aren't on beat.

  • they are on beat. It's just not to the milli second perfect like electronic music... THis difference adds up over a few bars and suddenly your beats dont match

  • U ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT A DJ OR A SOUND ENGINEER. Its a well known fact that Funk and Disco tracks are off beat. Mainly because they weren't produced with the precision of computers and more advanced gear. The bars are slightly off and get worse gradually.

Mixing funk and disco takes skill

  • @Razunitx True, to a point... Stevie Wonder pioneered much of the analog seq and stuff, his shit tends to stay on beat much longer. Towards the late 70's drum machines started being used of course, but it wasn't until the TR-808 that changed EVERYTHING.

  • ellaskins i think the windows you mention in your video many of us call breaks, good video!!!

  • haha...Level 42..Funk!..haha...good video though...I mix a lot of old school funk and I ride the pitch like crazy...damn drummers back in the day cant keep up...I got an old school soul/funk mix up on my page and in my description I say about this very point..lol...ill post the first part of the mix as a video response.

  • or we could use ableton... and mix whatever we want, regardless of how shitty the drummer is at keeping a beat

  • yeah but using computer programs is phony!!! It's not real djing. Good tutorial!

  • so get the track to ur pc, then warp it, then use serato or press a vynil/cd

    now its real djing?

  • 40000th viewer woot lol!

  • damn who doesent know about funk! i feel bad for these unfunky people

  • legend

  • you are a good teacher and this is simply a great lesson.

  • Hi mate, love the videos and the hats; quick question; In this video I can see the speaker set up next to the left turntable, how do you prevent this being a feedback issue?

  • because the turntable doesnt pick up audio

  • because the turntable doesn't pick up audio"? honestly your twisting my melon man, what do you mean? I appreciate you responding, but can you explain a little more please? My turntables pick up the vibration of my sound system and so I can't turn it up too loud or I get the loop from hell, any help or advice with this would be great. Please. Mad props to the guy in the video, do you do parties!?

  • You earthed your tables to the mixer?

  • Amazing mixes bro

  • That's old school mixing for funk, so I even started for long time ! I like this, its cool.

  • cool vid j!!

  • that ws funkin good! ooo im funny =P ye an ur awesome, cheers

  • Level 42 is sick nd mark king is god at bass.

  • i like this guys, sharing all the knowledge his got,

    thx bro

  • haha higgildy piggildy xD

  • thats not oldschool funk! thats disco tunes man

  • Brothers Johnson isn't funk? Okay.

  • What the hell are ya talkin about...Brothers Johnson were funk all over

  • No fucking shit. It was sarcasm.

  • Didnt catch the ?...Sorry bout that .Sarcasm is sometimes a little hard to detect in print...

  • man don't be dissing him, he is one funny man, what u just said was right on the button, all ur interested in is your self freebird9

  • freebird9 is a crap dj

  • man, if he would stop blabbin' around, i'd love his lessons!

  • well people would not know what this ones about

  • Yeah and thats why (in my opinion) mixing real funk (as opposed to cutting) is far more difficult and aquires a lot more skill than all the "machined" stuff. Even more so with the real funky stuff from 65-76. Thank you !

  • I love this guy, no ego, just a helpful and generous human being.

    Cheers mate !!

  • EAT BROCCOLI MY BROTHER

  • scheisse

  • higgildy piggildy

  • Get the Funk out, oh man. What a tune. What a tune.

  • True..

    great tune.

  • Old school funk? sounds more like disco to me! love games?! the b side's loads funkier!nicely mix though.

  • liked the 2nd better...

    love ur vids btw

  • i want that orange bros johnson album

  • Cool Video Man

Anything from the late 60's 70's.

We called it Deep House ( Ala Funky House )

    Trust me I'm from Chicago

  • if he says funk 1 more time i will skream

  • Hey bro go0dstuff....knowledge and practise creates awesome sounds...thanx 4 ur video...I will be able to master it now...lol need to get some equipment.

  • just a question wat type of mixer desk do u use. ur awesome great job.

  • Nice work J, i would love to see you make more videos like this one, cheers.

  • Hi Ellaskins. I'm assuming that you already know this, but funk wasn't the only tempo-fluctuating dance music. A large amount of 70s disco was also NOT made with drum machines, so same issue. This can be used to advantage, however, as in the case where a track ends 5 or 6 BPM faster than it began. In this case, you can mix into a slightly faster track with both being about the same pitch deviation (such as 0%) so that both sound pretty much the way that they were recorded. Good job, and enjoy!

  • your great man!

  • At 7:16 I understand you cut out track A 1/2 bar from the end because the vocals came in early. But I feel robbed that 1/2 bar from that track. In other words, IMHO the second try at 8:15 was better. Your explanation is spot on! Keep doing a great job!

  • that was a funking cool mix.

  • Do you have some mixes that I can download?

  • Youre doing a great job. P.s miami florida us

  • Thank you very much for that education, brother. You are a talented, intelligent man and you are a good d.j.

  • much better the last shot. excellent

  • Thank GOD for people like you. I love how you said "oh shit" right before you changed the camera.

  • As an Old-school funk musician (bass at that), much respect. Always good to understand the origin of any style of music. Continue to Funk on the 1 ...

  • THANK GOD, it's nice see that someone else understand the music of the pass and know that you really have too know and listen too the music of the pass in order too mix with it. I'm using my computer too try and mix some of the old skool funk and it's driving alittle crazy, because I don't have the full dj program too hook up my turntables, so I am finding it very hard too do sometimes. I think it's the lack of control. Keep up the good work.

  • i cleary dont know what your talking about but this sounds so interesting

  • Good tutorial, however I disagree in that the second mix was more "funktified" and it sounded better and smoother. But it's just my opinion. good stuff man, nothing beats funk not now not ever. "Keep on funkin"

  • The way you cycled in Bros.Johnson right at the end sounded gorgeous to me.

  • can u do happy hardcore techno????

  • can you mix some mariachi (mexican music)

  • where could i buy a mixer and the discs and all that

  • I'd love to hear some of your actual mixes, I really like your samples. What's your DJ name that I can look up your CD's by?

  • P.S. your samples are so good, I'd love to download or somehow find full versions of them to listen to because it's my kind of music.

  • His name is DJ Tutor, and i believe he just does tutorials, and doesn't release music.

    correct me if im wrong

  • Definitely an ideal point in terms of digitally produced music and 'real live music'.; much like how I feel about vinyl djs over cdjs.

  • Easy......

  • brilliant mixin for a track that was not made with a drum machine!!!

  • right on bro! nice one!

  • the old A&M record label , with old school funk. Most of these labels have gone outa business but the music still lives on, A+

  • It is very important to know your tunes all the way through. Especially with the older stuff. Know where the break comes in and how long you have to mix. Very cool man.

  • I reccomend every new dj try to do an old school mix and see how hard it really is!! j

  • have a listen some of my mixes .... bits of pink floyd and allsorts thrown in here an there....gonna try and do a funk one .....now where is that box of records .................

  • funk is good for the soul hehehe

  • Old Scholl Funk still alive!!!

  • thanks jon

  • As a DJ I don't rate u at all, but as entertainment, u're Ace. Does anyone agree, First mix stunk quite honestly, third mix "sounded" better, just listen! + Rip tracks into Ableton and Warp every beat so it is consistent, sorted.

  • Sounded awesome.

  • it is funny mixing when a track has used a 'human' drummer ....keeps you on your toes ;)

  • Why do you put human in inverted commas? Drummers, -musicians- are humans!

Funk died because it became synthetic.

Oh well, I'm gonna stop before ranting heavily :-)

Although I hate DJs, I must admit I like watching Ellaskins's videos! He's very good at explaining things and he is... Humane.

  • I put in inverted commas because I thought that would be a good way to show that I was commenting on human drummers as opposed to a drum machine or programmer( who, although human , uses synthetic timing) also the rest of my comment tends to lean you toward that direction of understanding .

You also stated that you " hate DJ's " oh dear ! , how can you possibly apply such a term in such a broad and generalized way I will never understand ... its like saying you 'hate ' all vegetables....

  • cont ..........

Sir , funk , is not, dead !!.

  • If you consider a type of music 'dead' if it is not currently mainstream ( as I can only presume that you do, judging by your comment )

Then please , take a week off an re-evaluate your opinions :)

  • Actually, I hate everything mainstream. Yes I know, back to the early 70S, Funk WAS mainstream but back then, there was hardly any crap in music, so mainstream was not as pejorative as it is now... As extreme as it may sound, I am one of those people who think good music died at the end of the 70S... Hence me hating DJs and all the Techno/Rap stuff. :-)

And in order to confuse you more, I dig Kraftwerk, Klaus Schultze and Tangerine Dream!

    :-D

    Have a nice day!

  • Such a strong word 'hate'!!..I'm not fond of the mainstream myself ....I'm Far from confused though, I understand where you are coming from a little more now .Definitely was a lot of good music about in the 70's ,and before!! , but I don't think good music died at this point...

A good tune is a good tune! whether it be Snoop Dogg , Jethro Tull , Steve Hillage or The Orb .....

Music is music and may we dance on

    peace and love

    mm

  • To DJmisplacedmarbles, Bravo!!, Funk is just getting started!

     j : )

  • Sorry dude, Funk is far from dead, we still do have reall bands you know. j

  • Yes I know! Do you know this English band called The Groove Connection?

BTW, the two tunes you used are late 70s Funk. I am into older school than that ;-) Think The Mighty Imperials, Dennis Coffey, Betty Davis or, of course, the Godfather!

Anyway, from a pedagogical point of view, your videos are ace! I destine myself to teaching and I hope I will be able to pass on my ideas as clearly as you do. There are so many poseurs on YT, it's great to see ppl like you :-)

    G'night!

  • this is a good vid another vid to check out is one called the 45 king it really good the dj doesnot have funk but breaks beats but the way the dj mixes is the way ellaskins discribes.

  • cheers and thanks for another great vid.

    Peace

  • whats the chances - bros johnson - im dj johnnee johnson & your NY hat im born &raised there.

    great vid as always

    Practice

    N

    Enjoy

  • well done it sounded pretty damn good.

  • I'm generally pretty accepting of people who aren't too familiar with some kinds of music, but any DJ who doesn't know what "funk" is should just give their kit away. Such a huge influence on what's around today and a huge part of music history, there's really no excuse for not knowing it. Great video though, J. I mix with a LOT of funk and this is a big help.

  • "...hickledy pickledy"

  • yeah luv it

  • nice(5)*****

  • Nice (5)*****

  • nice (5)*****

  • Thanks a lot ellaskins! I'm just sending in my Technics 1200 for repair, and when it comes back i hope to use your techniques!

  • yaya first view and comment

  • nice!

  • Very informative tutorial. I really liked the introduction about the history of the music before going into the technical stuff. This was great!

  • I love funk!

So many young DJs now don't realise what it was like for those of us who taught ourselves to mix the old school stuff on dodgy belt drive decks!
