F-4E was the dogfighting evolved variant for the USAF. It had a longer nose for internal canon, slats for maneuvering, much better than F-105, which clunker Mig-17s ran circles around. Phantom was the MiG killer of choice for the USAF and USN until F-14 and F-15.
The Kurnass (Isreali Version) of the F4 was the variant equivalent to the F-4E Improved strike model with improved engines, increased fuel capacity, redesigned nose containing smaller radar, leading-edge slats, and first model equipped with 20-mm cannon; 1,405 built for the U.S. numbers unknown for Isreal.
Stangsixer...check your facts before posting. The F4 DOES have a cannon. A rather powerful one. My father knows first hand as he we an Egyptian Mig-21 pilot who had numerous dogfights with Israeli F4s. During close range dogfights the Israeli F4 pilots' weapon of choice was the cannon. Although the F4 had superior weapons systems, it was in inferior dogfighter. Dozens of Israelie F4s were shot down by Mig-21's between 1970 and 1973...my father took one down himself.
No proven F-4 kills by EAF or Soviet AF were recorded before Yom Kippur. During yom kippur, only handful F-4s were lost to MiG-s. Mostly IAF was doing good aerial target practice.
In July 30, 1971 four IAF F-4s and for Mirage III-s met total 24 Soviet air force MiG-21MFs, five Migs vere shot down without single IAF loss.
jeff1478, for one who tells others not to "lie" you should not do so yourself. The fact is that Israel lost more than a handful of F-4's before the Yom Kippur war and dozens during.
Also, check your facts about the Soviet encounter. The Israelis did very well in shooting down all the Soviet fighters...but there weren't 24 of them as you claim. There were only 5 and all of them got shot down. So you're half way correct.
no the first f-4e was shoot down on the egyptian front against the egyptian fighter pilot ( Ahmed Atef ) and it's recorded to be done may be in 1969 or
^ Yeah, I remember when "Duke" was describing his take down of the North Viet ace, he lacked the cannons (I believe he had the USN F-4J), and it made it that much harder to win the dogfight. My understanding is that the some USAF F-4C's had external gunpods, as well as some of the USMC (F-4B) Variants. So many models to keep track of.
i thought they are going to show the whole thing, but dam, no gun kill showed. F-4E was the first model to fit with the M61 cannon in order to deal with threats in close range.
Not so true, only F-4Es had the gun fitted. USN Phamtons never had internal gun, sometimes they used gunpods, but the gunpod had really bad acuracy and the recoil damaged the pod pylons
too close for misiles, switchng to guns lol

F4E Phantom, and later models all had the built-in 20mm Vulcan cannon. As tito says, many other improvements too.

F4 does not have a gun, where do you come up with that lie ?
Every Vietnam veteran pilot wished he had a gun when dogfighting you go ask one if you meet one.
