Does anyone know approx when this performance? I take it that Ace has left the building by now, cos the hippie on bass (still an impressive player) is a quantum leap sideways (neither up nor down) from the Mod that was Ace. This must have been the invention of Grunge!
@caerphillykid: This performance is definitely 1970. Jeff Lynne is in the band as is bassist Rick Price (the hippie on bass as you stated). This single came out in early 1970, soon after the "Shazam" album was released. But the song was included on the "Looking On" LP which came out in Dec. of 1970.
@Rasurusan: I just got the remastered CD of "Looking On" today and GOOD GOSH IS IT AN EPIC ALBUM! That record will cleanse your mind and soul by the time it's finished.
Love how they cut to the announcer chick right in the middle of the solo like that...comedy! The Move were one of England's best bands of this era. Shame the U.S. didn't take hold of them as they should have.
@MattHatter I agree, the U.S. should've caught on to these guys. In a way the Beatles were a curse. After Beatlemania the U.S. wouldn't give great artists like The Move and Wizzard a chance. They saw them as Beatle ripoffs.
@donn409: Yeah that could have been the case. Their manager didn't help them with his publicity stunts. He could have been focusing on getting the band a tour of the U.S. in 1967 instead of that whole postcard of the prime minister thing! They were on a major label here in the U.S., A&M Records but the band didn't release the debut album until April of 1968 when they had been issuing singles since Dec. of '66. Whereas The Who found the right time to strike, The Move didn't.
Yes, just seven songs on the LP.1: Looking On, Turkish Tram Conductor Blues, What?, When Alice Comes Back To The Farm, 2: Open Up Siad The World At The Door, Brontosaurus, Feel To Good."Feel too good, What can you do, what can you do.."
F.T.G. is my favorite from the album, Bev's tophat work and drums, the falsettos, the rushing beat that just keeps on picking up speed, the oboe! Crazy.
Totally amazing how, after 30+ years of being a hardcore ELO fan, that there are still great segments like this that come to light. Thanks for the great post!
well I suppose half the number is better than nothing - even with the stupid woman in the middle of it.

Cheap Trick used this riff in the bridge of their cover of "California Man." And did a cover of the actual song later on. This rocks!

Not heard this since I was a nipper. Liked it back then, and I guess the Faces did too - it sounds like the template for 'Stay With Me'.

The DeLeo brothers of Stone Temple Pilots fame cite the Move as an inspiration to their musical style.
Nothing new really, but the Move inspired a lot of great musicians year later.

A vary short period Jeff Lynne with only
a moustache. They were making Looking on at that time. But there is no band portrait
in the original vinyl sleeve as I remember.

Lightning Never Strikes Twice. But it´s
included in many later CD- versions.

Although all the seven tracks are Moveish
can you imagine seven so different songs
in one album ? The last one is surely
recorded by only two takes. Only Wood and
Lynne are playing on Feel too Good. Espacially
the long last episode sounds very improvisal.
