  • it's fascinating to compare this footage with that taken in japan where the second surge here in CA was, as it was in japan, much larger than the first. and they occur on essentially the same time scale. when you really think about the mechanics of transferring that energy and motion (and preserving much of its original integrity) across thousands of miles of water, it's incredible. physics ROCKS!

  • that is some weeeird sh*****

  • Lousy video. Next time you do time-lapse, don't move the camera. Anything worth seeing was lost on you running around with 10 second shots of areas we weren't watching to being with.

  • @ChuckGoneWild Okay, tough guy. Where's your video of the tsunami? People like you suck. Have the balls to say it to our faces. You never would. Ryan, great video. It was really interesting. Chucky here must be able to follow around tsunamis around the world and take time lapses of them. Tool. Don't worry. I wouldn't be scared to say that to your face.

  • it is real i live here the boat is real

  • what is up with that boat??

  • I was there, it is very real,,,

  • y is the boat soooo small

  • The first surge is interesting. The second surge is frightening.

  • sk8bordr thats a really boat wi part of the dock still tied to it. the video was from about 15 or 20 feet above sea level

  • god the damage is terrible. i had some friends tthat have a place there and they went and took pictures a few days after. its a gohst town in the harbor. if the boats werent out at sea they were sunk.

  • Fascinating.

  • Incredible. I also have a video, but incredible. Thank you for uploading.

  • my favorite parts 2:55 with the boat & 3:33 with the lil bird just chillin on the water...

  • @homerm06 waas that a real sized boat or a toy it looked really small . or was this done from a higher vantage point

  • @Sk8bordr125 tHIS IS A FRAUD!! THIS IS NOT A TSUNAMI!!

  • fake crap

  • @theextremeful um.. how?

  • This was great !

The high speed was a very good idea.

  • I was there last summer. Such a pretty area. I think even creepier is the water going back out. Wow - what power. And yeah great vid. Just mute the audio, dorks ;)

  • laptop 0:57?

  • lmao the alarm sounds like a whistle

  • Thank God you did this in time lapsed mode because it would have taken too long to watch if it had been in real time. - - You did a fine job with this video. Thanks for posting it. - - I didn't look to see how long it took in real time but it was too quick for me if I had to deal with the power of water. I am glad you made it thourgh OK.

  • Ok, its your choice.

  • Quit censoring my post, or I am going to mark the time and file a formal complaint for censoring my post without cause. Try me.

  • Quit censoring my post. Are you a friend of thesaudilove, and share in his ignorance?

  • thesaudilove for ignorant post of the week. Yeah, the tsunami at Crescent City was boring. Right.

  • thesaudilove for non-nothing fool of the week. He ovbiously is stranger to the sea, without knowledge, and yet he makes a fool of himself in front of millions by posting his ignorance.

  • A most excellent video. I admire the camera man's courage, and caution(leaving the truck running). I'm brave when it comes to some things, but not this!

  • Loool! OMG did you see how hight that sunami was ! lol. Boooooooooooooooring!

  • @thesaudilove yeah at 3:50

  • Wow that STH-10 does sound like a Dentist's Drill so creepy sounding

  • sounds like my dentist!!!!

  • I know many Fisherman Families here and my Prayers go out to them as well as to all our brothers & sisters effected worldwide by this natural disaster

  • Fascinating footage! I don't think that's what any of us thought of when we thought of tsunamis.

  • Why would anyone say this is fake??? That just goes to show how ignorant those people are. Great video...thanks for sharing!

  • <---doesn't = don't. I'm tired. heh

  • It's not an RC plane, it's a full-sized coast guard helicopter. There were probably 4 or 5 different helicopters flying around that day, for obvious reasons. The people who say this is somehow faked are kind of funny. As a Crescent City resident who saw this first hand, I can only assume that they doesn't realize it's a time lapse or something, or are complete idiots.

  • Doesn't anybody question that if that loose boat was not a scaled down RC model, then that bird would have to be around 6 to 10 FEET tall!?!

  • The seagull in the water is hilarious

  • Fake

  • @ateaturd Dumb

  • I like the boat still attached to the pier/dock, that almost got away.

  • wow. Even sped up 6 times, that water is moving fast! Great footage!

  • Whats up with the rc plane?

  • Wow, very nice time-lapse! The perspective on this is amazing when the boat comes loose. I was able to capture some footage near my home on Monterey Bay, not as dramatic but the tsunami waves are quite apparent.

  • what were the Rc boats doing?

  • Comment removed

  • thanks for sharing, In noticed the r/c plane flying arouns was it taken aerial photos?

  • my ears :O

  • what's most interesting to watch is the little walkplank in the right of the video, you can see how high it goes when tide rushes in and how low it drops as tide pulls out.

  • Something is strange. FAKE

  • great vid! loved how the helicopter sounded like an RC model, and was that drill sound a warning siren?

  • Great video!

  • that sounds like a drill going thru your teeth.... eewk.

  • At 4:42 I was like WTF are you doing? It seem like you jump into the tide of the tsunami! Man that is crazy. Great work capturing the moments the waves arrive.

  • This is wacky wonderful. When the boat appears, it is shockingly small.

  • Should have sped it up by 60 times

  • If I had 12 gauge I would have shot that irritating helicopter!

  • What's with the annoying audio?

  • I don't believe this had anything to do with the tsunami. Hoax much? Oh yeah of course it is. nice little ship,

  • Cool video . You knew where to get the best shot . I love the sound track.

The boat comes out during the event to get a log ? That's good service !

  • Hard to believe that those waves came clear across the Pacific ocean. Thanks for the upload. What was the distance from your camera over to the point?

  • Hey, that truck has my last name on it! I had to pause the video just to make sure I saw what I thought I saw. Great footage! I don't mind the sound; that's what volume control is for. :)

  • Interesting view. Thanks for sharing!

  • Thanks for sharing. My family is from CC and I was very frustrated by the lack of CC coverage from Bay Area media (where I am now). Incredible.

  • WoW! that was cool. bet it was scarey though eh? i'm in Eureka, been to CC lots, and i'm glad i was home. you did good....oh brave ones! ♥

  • man that is creepy. i kinda had to chuckle at the boat that thought it could escape only to be thwarted by some wood and then the tsunami. poor boat.

  • man that is creepy.

  • Consider that earthquake was 5,000 miles away, and the energy took 12 hours to propagate across the Pacific Ocean, and there were like 8 surges at Crescent City over a 4 hour period, imagine the power!

  • around 2.40 where the boat breaks loose you get a real sense of the scale

  • interesting the first wave was not the strongest

  • Didnt know the scale of it until the boat came loose good footage!

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh

  • Wow! Thanks for sharing... Decision made... no, I don't want to own another boat, as much as I love the water... time to help those we can & support dive & fishing charters!

  • Thanks for sharing. My parents live there-right off Pebble Beach Dr., and I was watching the news here all day waiting for any video footage and nothing. It's funny how Hollywood will show these huge waves in movies, but you can see this more like what a real Tsunami looks like, and all that water does some serious damage.

  • bird at 3:50 is like "fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, FFFFUUUUUU"

  • Excellent Job! Best footage I've seen showing the surge height. We will recover. My prayers go out to all my friends who depend on their boats here in Crescent city. The struggling fishermen will be hit hardest :-(

  • I agree...great footage! I'm in McKinleyville and we had some large surges here as well, but not as dramatic. Great job at recording this.

  • Great job!

  • -Terrific 6xTime-lapse video idea, really captures the 8ft rise&fall of the Tsunami aright; --like nobody else's video actually manages to! I was not at first that impressed, until at 2:45 we see a Fishing-boat being cast-adrift replete with it's harbor-dock mooring, -which reveals the actual scale of the scene relative to the 20ft-height of the rock/Sea-break built after 1964, serving to protect the CrescentCity-harbor in N.California where the beautiful Redwood-forest resides just inland..!!

  • Thank you for sharing this. I hope you all recover quickly!

  • wow i hear the damage is much worse down there than in brookings

  • I thought the sound was hillarious.

Thanks for posting :) Amazing footage.

  • great footage! thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you for posting this. First pictures I've seen of the event in Crescent City.

  • Great vid! Thanks, bro!

  • Cool video. The sirens sound like a dentist drill. LOL.

  • 0:58 is that a fucking laptop?

  • @PoOpSqUiD must you use such language. I was taught people with limited education turn to swear words!

  • @mistygirldog1 better that than drugs if you ask me.

  • best demonstration of what happens during a tsunami. Congrats!

  • Thanks for posting Ryan. Speeding up the video gives us a good idea about just how dangerous a surge can be . . . and there's not a damn thing we can do about it when it occurs - except go for high, high ground, early.

We're at 160' elevation near Watsonville (on the Monterey Bay). We hope that will be high enough but we know parts of Watsonville will take a hit some day. It was bad enough during the 1989 quake but large amounts of fast moving water scare the sh.. out of me.

  • absolutely wonderful video. terrible tragedy in japan. thank you for uploading

  • impressive video, but please don't risk your life making such vids!

    water is brutally dangerous.

  • Have you not heard of mute? Shit, man.

  • very cool with the sound turned off.....

  • Thanks for sharing. I'm from that area but live far away now... I really appreciate the link so I can grasp what my family/friends saw.

  • Beautifully done!

  • Did you happen to see if the F/V Winga was docked in Crescent City and if so if she was damaged. It's an old family boat that my grandfather built. and she's like part of the family.

  • Amazing footage! Thanks! We live in Humboldt County and are relatively dry here.

  • Awesome footage. Thanks for sharing!

  • round 1:23 there was a small wirpool. cool footage... I live here in crescent and it is kinda bizarre.....

  • A+ Video Thanks

  • Wasnt being rude about thesound comment..... was simply trying to warn other viewers who might have the speakers turned up. No need to be rude.

  • terrible video. SHows nothing.

  • Great footage, Screw the Haters regarding the Sound. Its called RAW video for a reason right? Thanks for sharing. we are ok down here in the bay area central cali coast :-)

  • Scary. Reminds me of 64.

  • That is super cool! Make sure The Weather Channel gets this. Maybe they'll credit you for it.

  • This video is sped up 6 times. That is why the audio is screwed up. We had the truck running in case it overtopped the bank. The water rise was not as fast as the video portrays. It is sped up to show the height differential.

  • @ryanengr I like that you left the audio, because then it's pretty obvious that the video is sped up around 6x speed (which you confirmed). When it starts to get annoying, people can just turn off the volume.

  • Wow! thanks for the info!

  • That boat wasn't full-size right? It looked like a model or the like?

  • @tedrrrrrr: that was a full size boat. NOT a model.

  • @tedrrrrrr Definitely a full sized boat. This is real.

  • That "annoying" sound is that of birds scared to death

  • Most annoying audio I've ever heard in my life

  • @coalman280 shows you don't know how to read, or turn down the sound either, some of us use this information how it is intended...quit whining like a child and use your head before you open your mouth.

  • @stirmind Hahahaha I dont know how to read because I said the sound was annoying, how does reading anything or turning down the sound change the fact that the sound is retarded?? Use my head for what?? This comment makes no sense what so ever, nice to see you ur dick must be an inch since you have to put people down by using your own pointless comments, have a nice day cockstain!

  • Comment removed

  • @stirmind Looks like ya lost! lol soooo sad :)

  • @coalman280 I was the one who removed my comment, out of respect for the videos poster, and the people who where severely affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Some of us own own boats in distant harbors, have family on the coast, etc. That is why I am grateful for footage like this. Standard news, seems to only repeat what other news sources are saying...that is why i think you should refrain from being so negative when someone is only trying to disseminate additional information.

  • really cool footage but if that was happening anywhere near me I'd be on top of a building somewhere filming right by the edge of the water is a little to close for comfort

  • Man I wanted to c more. Glad the boat go away but didn't hit the rocks. Jux love those sea gull, they r floating in the water like having no clue what so ever.

  • Unbelievable! And lots of people think a tsunami is one huge 50 foot wave like in The Poseidon Adventure, but this shows what the water really does. Scary. Great video, but stay on high ground.

  • Thanks for posting. Very interesting sped up.

  • So cool to see this...thanks for sharing!!

  • Absolutely incredible video. Thanks so much for posting it!

  • It would be so sad if these are some of the people who got swept out. Amazing, but so sad.

  • @MuggleN0More Ugh. Eureka might be getting some waves, Anyone up for some swimming?

  • @pepsiman570 I live near Eureka and we have had some good waves coming up the Mad, Eel, and other local rivers. Some damage to local boats but nothing compared to Crescent City.

  • those birds on the dock must be Honey Badgers, because they don't give a sh*t!

  • oh shit, look at that boat @2:40

  • Gotta turn the sound off...... really annoying

  • @theclaxtons420

That would be the AirRaid/Alert Sirens, Helicopters, and Emergency Response Unit noises..all a part of the video, be glad somebody got footage.
