it's fascinating to compare this footage with that taken in japan where the second surge here in CA was, as it was in japan, much larger than the first. and they occur on essentially the same time scale. when you really think about the mechanics of transferring that energy and motion (and preserving much of its original integrity) across thousands of miles of water, it's incredible. physics ROCKS!
Lousy video. Next time you do time-lapse, don't move the camera. Anything worth seeing was lost on you running around with 10 second shots of areas we weren't watching to being with.
@ChuckGoneWild Okay, tough guy. Where's your video of the tsunami? People like you suck. Have the balls to say it to our faces. You never would. Ryan, great video. It was really interesting. Chucky here must be able to follow around tsunamis around the world and take time lapses of them. Tool. Don't worry. I wouldn't be scared to say that to your face.
god the damage is terrible. i had some friends tthat have a place there and they went and took pictures a few days after. its a gohst town in the harbor. if the boats werent out at sea they were sunk.
I was there last summer. Such a pretty area. I think even creepier is the water going back out. Wow - what power. And yeah great vid. Just mute the audio, dorks ;)

A most excellent video. I admire the camera man's courage, and caution(leaving the truck running). I'm brave when it comes to some things, but not this!
I know many Fisherman Families here and my Prayers go out to them as well as to all our brothers & sisters effected worldwide by this natural disaster
It's not an RC plane, it's a full-sized coast guard helicopter. There were probably 4 or 5 different helicopters flying around that day, for obvious reasons. The people who say this is somehow faked are kind of funny. As a Crescent City resident who saw this first hand, I can only assume that they doesn't realize it's a time lapse or something, or are complete idiots.
Wow, very nice time-lapse! The perspective on this is amazing when the boat comes loose. I was able to capture some footage near my home on Monterey Bay, not as dramatic but the tsunami waves are quite apparent.
Great video, obviously the footage is real, it still takes a lot of balls to stand there considering no one really knew for sure how large the surge would be entering into Crescent City.
what's most interesting to watch is the little walkplank in the right of the video, you can see how high it goes when tide rushes in and how low it drops as tide pulls out.
At 4:42 I was like WTF are you doing? It seem like you jump into the tide of the tsunami! Man that is crazy. Great work capturing the moments the waves arrive.
Hard to believe that those waves came clear across the Pacific ocean. Thanks for the upload. What was the distance from your camera over to the point?
Hey, that truck has my last name on it! I had to pause the video just to make sure I saw what I thought I saw. Great footage! I don't mind the sound; that's what volume control is for. :)
Consider that earthquake was 5,000 miles away, and the energy took 12 hours to propagate across the Pacific Ocean, and there were like 8 surges at Crescent City over a 4 hour period, imagine the power!
Wow! Thanks for sharing... Decision made... no, I don't want to own another boat, as much as I love the water... time to help those we can & support dive & fishing charters!
Thanks for sharing. My parents live there-right off Pebble Beach Dr., and I was watching the news here all day waiting for any video footage and nothing. It's funny how Hollywood will show these huge waves in movies, but you can see this more like what a real Tsunami looks like, and all that water does some serious damage.
Excellent Job! Best footage I've seen showing the surge height. We will recover. My prayers go out to all my friends who depend on their boats here in Crescent city. The struggling fishermen will be hit hardest :-(
-Terrific 6xTime-lapse video idea, really captures the 8ft rise&fall of the Tsunami aright; --like nobody else's video actually manages to! I was not at first that impressed, until at 2:45 we see a Fishing-boat being cast-adrift replete with it's harbor-dock mooring, -which reveals the actual scale of the scene relative to the 20ft-height of the rock/Sea-break built after 1964, serving to protect the CrescentCity-harbor in N.California where the beautiful Redwood-forest resides just inland..!!
Thanks for posting Ryan. Speeding up the video gives us a good idea about just how dangerous a surge can be . . . and there's not a damn thing we can do about it when it occurs - except go for high, high ground, early.
We're at 160' elevation near Watsonville (on the Monterey Bay). We hope that will be high enough but we know parts of Watsonville will take a hit some day. It was bad enough during the 1989 quake but large amounts of fast moving water scare the sh.. out of me.
Did you happen to see if the F/V Winga was docked in Crescent City and if so if she was damaged. It's an old family boat that my grandfather built. and she's like part of the family.
Great footage, Screw the Haters regarding the Sound. Its called RAW video for a reason right? Thanks for sharing. we are ok down here in the bay area central cali coast :-)
This video is sped up 6 times. That is why the audio is screwed up. We had the truck running in case it overtopped the bank. The water rise was not as fast as the video portrays. It is sped up to show the height differential.
@ryanengr I like that you left the audio, because then it's pretty obvious that the video is sped up around 6x speed (which you confirmed). When it starts to get annoying, people can just turn off the volume.
@coalman280 shows you don't know how to read, or turn down the sound either, some of us use this information how it is intended...quit whining like a child and use your head before you open your mouth.
@stirmind Hahahaha I dont know how to read because I said the sound was annoying, how does reading anything or turning down the sound change the fact that the sound is retarded?? Man I wanted to c more. Glad the boat go away but didn't hit the rocks. Jux love those sea gull, they r floating in the water like having no clue what so ever.
Unbelievable! And lots of people think a tsunami is one huge 50 foot wave like in The Poseidon Adventure, but this shows what the water really does. Scary. Great video, but stay on high ground.
