  • I still love the synthisizers!

  • Wow, 1980s music was really kinda great

  • Alright, I have done a ton of looking, so help me out here. Anyone know where I can find his music? Youtube has a few songs and ebay sucks. Any suggestions?

  • @polaris30000 Well he's Canadian, so ask one :) cause I grew up listenening and loving his tunes, I can drag the tapes or 45's out

  • Awesome

  • this song is very deep

  • As the son of a WWII veteran and the nephew of eight others, I have renewed pride in my relatives every time I hear this song. I had the video on VHS and watched it so much, the tape eventually broke.

I know the Greatest Generation is not the primary user of YouTube. But, if any of you are out there, may God bless you. You embodied a greatness that we, unfortunately, will probably never see again. Your pride and courage changed the world!

  • Just finishe reading ALL the comments (7+ pages). Boy, does this bring back memories. And I would love to buy the CD/DVD when and if it ever comes out.

One question, which has haunted me since I first saw the video back on Much,

    ...

Who is the woman with the "Battleship Hat'? She seems familiar. I think she also appears in military uniform at the end.

My guess has always been Susan Vega - she was popular back then at the same time this video was made.

    Anyone know? Am I right?

  • @katbyrt Not Suzanne Vega. Gary's from Toronto -- the video was shot at the old Gooderham & Woorts whiskey factory on Toronto's water front...the veterans you see are real and the man & woman in the close-up narrative were MuchMusic staff members as they were already card carrying ACTRA members (union members).

  • Love this 80's song. Trying to pay for a download, but can't find it anywhere. Any suggestions??? Thanks.

  • was there a vid for "she's just one of the boys"? havent heard that tune in years and years....anyone got it? even just the audio

  • Such a classic song. And wow - it's aged well! The type of song you can't help but sing along with.

  • STRANGE BEHAVIOUR del 84

  • I loved this song. And damn, Gary O was handsome.

  • And still I wonder

    Is it only thunder

  • Always loved this song & artist/songwriter. Very meaningful. No new world order crap

or other leftist drivel. Wish it was re-released in CD with video. Whole album great,

but this song brings a tear at times.

  • I too am going to war. May God be on my side. To all who read this, may God be with you as well, in life and in death.

  • I AM CANADIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!! Eh?

  • Does he say "dawning of a new clear day", or "nuclear day"? Or is that a pun on words considering the subject at hand in the video?

  • It always seemed to be a play on words to me.

In many of the places where the lyrics are posted, it is spelled "nu-clear"...I suppose to emphasize the way it is pronounced in the song.

  • this tune is the shit!!!

  • Perfect song for Remembrance Day.

  • I have a channel that may be of interest to veterans.

  • Whoa. I haven't heard this in...fifteen years? Twenty?

  • More than that.

  • It's a shame the Roland GR-707 controller ( guitar ) had such slow tracking . It is still an awesome looking guitar ( controller ) !

  • thanks man - brings back grat memories ... fantastic song ....

    michael, germany

  • Great video, great song!

  • gary o had another video called get it while you can, anyon sees this that can track it down, should put it on here

  • Please, would somebody, anybody, put "Call of the wild" on YouTube!

  • i have been trying to find that song for ever online .... nothing : (

  • I was able to get an Aerial CD that is both of their albums on one disc. It is awesome. I love Moments Like This the most, and still can't find it to download anywhere, as if Aerial never existed.

Apparently he went on to write a couple of big hits for bands like .38 Special. Good for him, he deserves it with such musical talent and great hooks.

  • I have to look through my old vhs tapes, I probably have it somewhere. I loved that song and the video's funny.

  • This is a GREAT SONG !!! Many times i wore out the cassette and had to buy again. Would love it if someone would be able to post Garys other big hit"GET IT WHILE YOU CAN". Thanks in advance

  • HOLY ONE-HIT WONDERS BATMAN!!!

  • thanks so much. I recently lost my grandfather, a ww2 vet, and he and I both loved this song way back when. It was funny, listening to this song at 16/17 yrs old with my 75 yr old grampa but he loved it.

  • Hello. Great to hear you and your Grandfather enjoyed the song. He wrote the song in memory of the many military personnel and civilians who lost their lives in both world wars.

I participated in the making of the Shades of 45 video and I can tell you that many of the veterans who appeared in it had some great stories to tell and many a tear in their eyes.

    Sincerely,

    Rick O'Connor (Gary's Brother).

  • This album a number of great songs on it.

  • @riocon53 Hey Rick. My name is Craig Farraway. Gary worked with me on one of my tunes back in the early 90's. He's a super guy. Can you tell him I said hello. He'll know who I am. Cheers.

  • @CraigTube Hey Craig just saw your post , I too am a great Canadian fan of Gary's, cool to learn he worked with you . We both know I am a fan of you aswell. Cheers.

  • Brings back memories of disarmament rallies at Kitsilano, Vancouver in 1985 . It was (and still is) a favorite tune .

  • I remember the mates from the North Nova Scotia Highlanders.... CPL Albert Washington

  • thanks, kurdtss

now if we can only get it on iTunes.

  • This is a great song. I remember watching this on MuchMusic. The DJ's I remember are JD Roberts, Christopher Ward, Erica Ehm, Mike Williams, Steve Anthony. I used to live in Canada (Kingston, Ontario). Brings back a lot of memories.

  • jd roberts now on cnn as james roberts

  • Actually its John Roberts

  • I had to see this video, as the song has been stuck in my head for 3 days. I actually heard it on the radio for the first time since 1986. Ottawa's oldies station, Oldies 1310 is playing this song, back when they were a top 40 they played it to0.

  • Damn, where is "All The Young Heroes?" I once owned this CASSETTE!

  • Classic Canadian rock tune!!! Brings back memories, like when Erica Ehm was the resident hottie at MuchMusic!

  • Erica Ehm was a scank! If you wanted hotties you needed to have a satellite dish watching MTV back in the 80's where you would have seen Martha Quinn and Nina Blackwood.

  • iLOVE This song!!!

  • let's get this song on iTunes!

  • Poignant video in remembrace of those who fought so that we my be free. And John McLeod of the Overdrive Blade is the young soldier. Kudos to Gary O - a great song and video.

  • Gary O and the Zone- Call of the Wild. He's a wedding crasher, sort of like "I Knew the Bride When..." Really cool guitar riff. Has Anybody seen it recently?

  • Great song, as is Call of the Wild....I was lucky enough to be there when the album was recorded. I have a copy of the Call of The wild video somewhere.

  • I thought YouTube claimed to have every video in existance? I've gone looking for my favorite CanCon and dimly-remembered videos, only to be left hanging... quite amazed that Bourgois Tagg was so easily available, though...

  • 'The restless sky'? That sounds almost Lovecraftian.

  • Wow!!..I did not know he wrote "Back where you belong" I just tuned into Gary O for the fallen soldiers of WW2. It is Remeberance day in Canada today. All my love to the brothers in arms of the allied forces that performed their campaign on D day. I thank all the British, USA, and Canadian regiments for defeating what could have meant a terrible future for us. God bless you all Lads!

  • Ra! Now lets see if we can defeat the new Nazi regime.

  • Don't forget Russia.

  • he wrote back where you belong for 38 special- and other songs for alice cooper- he also wrote other songs for bands in the 80s...

    still lives in toronto canada

  • Didn't Gary O used to be in another band, previous to this? Possibly the guitarist?

  • It's sad really...the whole WWII. 35 million corpses later, nobody's learned a damn thing. Ob well, looks like more where that came from. Smoke 'em if you got 'em boys! WHo knows what future our leaders will be sailing us into. CHeers!

  • Well said, well said.

  • Brilliant song! Love seeing the Vets in the video too! .....Love your freedom?? Thank a Vet!......

  • V66 circa 83?? :V66 Boston MTV like station in th 80's

  • Gary's (Strange behavior) lp was such a great album

so I don't understand why RCA did not re-issue this

lp on cd. You would think with all the retro 80's stuff being so hot that this would have been a no brainer for the record label.

    Take care all.

    Bruce.

  • Great song, my favorite was 'All The Young Heroes' and Gary O sang a great cover of 'Pay You Back With Interest' as well.

  • Love the Pay you back with Interest. Saw him perform that live with Dee Long of Klaatu in the 80's

  • I really love this song. Does anyone know where I can buy an MP3 of this song? I tried Puretracks and Itunes, but they don't have anything by Gary O.

  • I found it on isohunt. Do a search for "shades of 45" and dl the torrent for either "VA-Heard it on the Radio" or "Music - 101 Classic Canadian 80's Songs". Both have the song.

  • Great Song, great Album. But the Killer is "Get it while you can", this Song were a Cult-Classic in the bavarian Rock-Clubs in the 80´s.

  • I still like Gary O's "Call of the Wild" better. I haven't seen or heard that one in a while!

  • Gary, if your reading this, contact Stan at Non-Stop,

he'll give you my number. ~JC

  • This song should be entrenched in the Canadian psyche.

  • Is that the one with Dave McCormick and Red Robinson? I managed to play it on RealPlayer....very cool!

  • Oh man you are right, I forgot all about that show, it was brilliant! It was Dave McCormick who also hosted the show, I loved the blend of commentary, history and songs....I actually have some episodes taped (somewhere on cassette now that my brain remembers it....I think I have Led Zep, the Police, Chilliwack...)

  • I really only remember him on 14 CFUN in Vancouver then he appeared on GRT..

  • As far as I can remember Terry started his career in radio as a DJ, spending two decades at stations including CFUN and CHUM. He moved into television as host of CBC's video show "Good Rockin' Tonight" before joining MuchMusic in 1985.

  • 5 stars. many trips on the hockey bus with this.

  • A classic song. SO underrated and neglected it's sad.

  • I'm Gary's brother and I'm so glad you like the song. I totally agree with your comments.

    Rick O'Connor

  • One of the best songs and videos from a Canadian artist I remember as a kid growing up in Vancouver....it was all over Good Rockin'Tonight and Video Hits....

  • I remember in Grade 6 our teacher taught us poetry with this song. The song is so full of meaning and powerful imagery.

    eg.

The pun "dawning of a new clear/nuclear day"

"God is on our side, and whatever it takes we got to turn the tide, I'm coming home, we can laugh again"

  • cool. u gotta find Paul Janz' i go to pieces. this is jus awesome its like my 80's mixed tapes come to life. Remember tapen with ghetto blaster off of tv episode of Good Rockin Tonight..lmao.
