Too many snobs out there. Most of the those who moan haven't made a name for themselves. If it wasn't for Russell I wouldn't have listened to Opera. He opened my eyes. Everyone is entitled to put their mark on songs - he did, he enjoys what he's doing and he's earning money from it. More than what other people can say for themselves.
Fair enough if you don't like it but don't judge him for it. Opera snobs aren't worth their salt and give a fantastic genre a bad name.
He's good & I lik him, but I think that he's considered as a student compared with the giants ! Listen to some other Opera singers like Pavarotti OR Andrea Bocceli OR Jose Carreras OR Placido Domingo & tens of Others . Please, do have my best regards . . . @HayleyShark Boy, you hit the nail right on the head...seems to be a bias that he doesn't imitate and/or look like your typical Italian opera singer. Russell is a unique talent with an amazing voice, range and styles....he can do it all quite beautifully, thank you.

@indah007: with that being said, i hope you can respect my OPINION on this video. dont take offense to it. at any age you are entitled to an opinion...no arrogance, just not what want to listen to, or expect to hear, when this famous chorus is sung in such a way. it's not that deep...
Viva l'Italia.

Ye Gods, ther should be a law against taking a beautiful opera chorus like this one and trashing it with a cheesy pop performance. This is opera, and moreover it is a chorus, not a solo. BTW, Watson, it's pronounced "va pen-sier-o" not "va pen-cher-o".

He should be thrown in the garbage with all those other trash popera/crossover so-called "singers" like Andrea Bocelli, Paul Potts, Sarah Brightman, Filippa Giordano and Katherine Jenkins. Yes, a pleasant enough voice, but he obviously knows neither music nor Italian and learns the pieces "phonetically". Va Penciero??? Lord have mercy! Don't audiences and critics have any musical taste or knowledge of operatic history? Why is this man making money on the ignorance and stupidity of audiences?

@philipc67 Pop opera fans don't understand the difference between pop singers who sing opera arias and real opera singers. I've been trying for ages to tell popera fans what the difference is, but most of them just beat me up with buzz phrases like "You're a hater" and "Well, if you're so great, where are your CDs." They must have a guidebook of these invalid arguments to discredit people who disagree with them.

@guasc0 I certainly agree. This pop version of one of the finest choruses Verdi ever wrote is perfectly dreadful. Verdi must be spining in his grave. The pop opera fans just don't get the difference between popera and real opera performers. Popera has merit to it's fans (I'm not one of them), but I wish popera people wouldn't confuse popera singers with real opera singers who sing roles in complete operas and who have superb technique and training...and for God's sake, never use microphones!

One of the few male singers I do like. However, I don't like mixing the two versions of La, Pensiero, I'm familiar with, together, the children's version and Verdi's original Italian version. They have different meanings. His Italian is questionable but his English is impeccable. Does anyone know who wrote the children's version?
@andre23i Yeah... amazing, as a con man. There's TWO abominable aspects, one is his voice, which should not be brought out of the immediate parochial range and the yearly neighbourhood jamboree; two, the obscene way he cripples the Italian language and accent. Singers who want to be serious about what they do learn the lyrics with the international phonetic alphabet, which gives them a diction that's at least ACCEPTABLE. This is a MASSACRE. Gheorghij
@MrsPisaroni I just pray that after two brain tumours and growing up in the back streets of Salford, you would be able to demonstrate the humility this guy does.
he doesn't pretend to be anything more than what he is, a very talented chap with an amazing voice. See the good in a person and their talent and not the snobbery you portray with your "TRAINED" voice comments. HE ISN'T TRYING TO BE AN OPERA SINGER.....................................DOH..............................
@burnell007 It was NOT a brain tumour: first time, it was a pituitary adenoma; second time, a bleeding where the tumor had been. "Humility"??!!! I don't see humility, I see HYPOCRISY; "back streets" of wherever??!!! Plenty people with that type of origin, who are not as phoney, Gheorghij
Clearly has no idea what he is singing, it's just a pretty melody to him. I try to keep an open mind about this type of performance. When he didn't even get the name of the song correct, singing "va penciero", that was it for me. That stupid expression on his face at the end made me want to slap him. Next.
Russell Watson is not an opera singer.. BUT- He does cross-over singing so beautifully, I cannot get tired listening to his music. He is in my book the best in this type of singing.
Russell Watson is NOT AN OPERA SINGER. Please refer to Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, Florez, Alagna, Alvarez, Spagnoli, Gavanelli, Furlanetto, Villazon,Hampson,Schrott,Kauffmann Et Al. He has made a lot of money conning idiots who seem unable to tell the difference between a TRAINED voice and a pleasantly average talent. Practising scales 'la,la,la,la,la,la,la does not an opera singer make. Russell is a singer who sings opera not an opera singer. There is a great difference.
@MrsPisaroni You're absolutely right. Fans of these pop opera singers can't seem to understand that we're not saying the popera singers have No talent, just that they do not have the voices, training, or technique to be opera singers.
I'm delighted that you mentioned Furtlanetto among your choices of real opera singers. He's one of my favorites. I'll hear him singhis first Baron Ochs next year.
@arpeggio1358 There's a lot of snobbery (and reverse snobbery) in the musical world. I can enjoy crooning as well as singing. Used to like Crosby, & do enjoy Watson but Jussie Bjorling's voice singing this sends me to heaven. It's a great tune. Listen Bjorling sing the Pearl Fisher's duet. WOW!
@ifuliki I enjoy some of the crooners, too. Crosby was very good, as was Russ Columbo, who died very young. I love Jussi Bjorling also. His was a really great voice. Will look up the Pearl Fishers duet. My tastes in music are pretty eclectic.
@arpeggio1358 Let me know what you think about the Bjorling/Merrill duet from the Pearl Fishers. You are likely too young to have heard Paul Robeson (excuse the assumption). If not search for him and you will have a treat coming. I can't get "How many roads" by Dylan out of my head once I hear it again.
@MrsPisaroni I just pray that after two brain tumours and growing up in the back streets of Salford, you would be able to demonstrate the humility this guy does.

@burnell007 Maybe he doesn't TRY to be an opera singer, but he surely MANAGES to extract from people the ticket price... HE is the one who ought to be paying to inflict this kind of torment on human ears. Gheorghij
@Jenwillsquishyouall "Jealous"??""" I'm not in the singing trade, so I can't see what I could possibly be "jealous" about of this guy. I happened to fall across this piece of his on YT, I happen to like good music, I found him abominable as a singer and I expressed this opinion of mine in the "comments". Do I need your permission? and for sure, I'll studiously avoid clicking up again any of his exhibitions. "Jealous"... PAH!!! Gheorghij

@xxWayoftheSunxx He is NOT an opera singer. An opera singer is someone who sings IN LIVE OPERAS in opera theaters. He is a pop singer who sings operatic selections in pop way, but in no way acceptable in opera. This is a chorus by the way, not an aria. It has meaning, it's not just a pretty melody. It's sung by Hebrew slaves in Egypt. Listen to Met chorus singing it here. As to "best opera singers" - listen to Piotr Beczala, Jonas Kaufmann, Frank Lopardo, Juan-Diego Florez, Lawrence Brownlee.
Russell Watson can sing anything and it goes into my favorites. This was a lovely presentation of a classic...I wish I had known he was performing in AC. I wouldn't have missed it!
Russell Watson should be called The Voice ???? Who gave him the epithet cannot have been classically trained. Karaoke opera no more no less. True opera is done WITHOUT microphones. Distinctly average at best. Thankfully overstrain of his untrained voice has led him to give up trying to sing opera. Take the money and run Russell, your'e a brilliant con man, just pity those idiots you have duped.
This is absolutely ghastly! Please, go listen to the original chorus version (from the opera "Nabucco" The beautiful version from the Met, is on YouTube. And by the way, Russell, the words are 'va pensiero" not va penchero".
I don't agree!! I mean the translation completely spoiled the original meaning of the lyrics, which were fantastic, intense.. and making it so cheap, so phony!!!
I finally discovered by witnessing this performance that I wasn't alone with the talent I have (Voice). I've just met my match. I am truly shocked (But in a tender way)
@tOnYBersekr That one is not a "version", but the ORIGINAL; and it's that way this piece HAS TO BE presented. This one sounds like the meowing of a castrated cat with a bellyache. He has no right to charge money, he can present this pap to the circle of his immediate friends. That's what karaoke is for, and this way opf singing is no more than karaoke. Gheorghij
@Jenwillsquishyouall Poor boy, he sounds like a castrated cat... a real torment to the ear. What's the sense of having a single American tenor singing what should be a choir - and sending him to the TAJ MAHAL in INDIA of all places??!!! Americans, stick to M;ichael Jackson, Madonna, Justin Bieber... they are more like you. "USA concert"??!!! PAH!!! "Nolite ponere margaritas ante porcos", don't offer pearls to swines... Gheorghij
You are 36 years old ( at least that's what you've written in your profile ) and you write comments on youtube about how you hate a nation and its people. Pathetic !
My age has nothing to do with it! Sorry if it bother you! I do not hate any nation, specially Italy where my grands came from. But I cant stand people writing about accents, its a great effort made by Russell, an english guy, to sing in Italian!
Russel Watson would'nt sound better anywhere. Listen to the voices of Jonas Kauffmann or Juan Diego Florez singing O Holy Night by Gounod. Va pensiero should only ever be sung by a chorus. It is not a solo for a crooner.
Hehe Millions of pople world wide love his music sadly they cannot all be uniformed.........Have you ever thought that you may be out of step with the army and not vice versa....................The man is a genius Ipso facto I rest me case
Certified Intergalactic! I was surprised by the change in his voice at 1:57. He's so versatile. One time he sings like Spandau Ballet and then he turns into a Pavarotti. That's what you call real crossover!
beautiful!!!!!to my knowledge, he does not claim to be a professional trained 'classica' singer but he have a beautiful delivery of talent and shares with us. To me, he is beautiful and an eye-opener!!!why people tear him down is beyond me and i can only guess that they do not receive free tickets for his appearances. You should enjoy this delightful and sincere voiceing of any song available to the public.
I agree whole heartedly, I saw this guy at the colsten all and he is amazing- he gave me goosepimples :) I was one of the younger people in the audience but it was very well worth it! hes underrated x

I have never heard it 'crooned' before but it is OK. It is a wonderful piece. Watson also has a fine tenor which he demonstrates here.

AMAZING RUSSELL WATSON
andre23i 1 year ago

KostiKorff 1 year ago
MrsPisaroni 1 year ago
@MrsPisaroni You're absolutely right. Fans of these pop opera singers can't seem to understand that we're not saying the popera singers have No talent, just that they do not have the voices, training, or technique to be opera singers.
I'm delighted that you mentioned Furtlanetto among your choices of real opera singers. He's one of my favorites. I'll hear him singhis first Baron Ochs next year.
arpeggio1358 1 year ago
@arpeggio1358 There's a lot of snobbery (and reverse snobbery) in the musical world. I can enjoy crooning as well as singing. Used to like Crosby, & do enjoy Watson but Jussie Bjorling's voice singing this sends me to heaven. It's a great tune. Listen Bjorling sing the Pearl Fisher's duet. WOW!
ifuliki 1 year ago
@ifuliki I enjoy some of the crooners, too. Crosby was very good, as was Russ Columbo, who died very young. I love Jussi Bjorling also. His was a really great voice. Will look up the Pearl Fishers duet. My tastes in music are pretty eclectic.
arpeggio1358 1 year ago
@arpeggio1358 Let me know what you think about the Bjorling/Merrill duet from the Pearl Fishers. You are likely too young to have heard Paul Robeson (excuse the assumption). If not search for him and you will have a treat coming. I can't get "How many roads" by Dylan out of my head once I hear it again.

@balbannock lol what the hell do you mean could use training? he's one of those best opera singers i've heard in awhile.
xxWayoftheSunxx 1 year ago 2

MissManchester10 1 year ago
Russell Watson should be called The Voice ???? Who gave him the epithet cannot have been classically trained. Karaoke opera no more no less. True opera is done WITHOUT microphones. Distinctly average at best. Thankfully overstrain of his untrained voice has led him to give up trying to sing opera. Take the money and run Russell, your'e a brilliant con man, just pity those idiots you have duped.

Gheorghij

You are 36 years old ( at least that's what you've written in your profile ) and you write comments on youtube about how you hate a nation and its people. Pathetic !
StalloneTM 2 years ago
My age has nothing to do with it! Sorry if it bother you! I do not hate any nation, specially Italy where my grands came from. But I cant stand people writing about accents, its a great effort made by Russell, an english guy, to sing in Italian!
macerto 2 years ago 3

Russel Watson would'nt sound better anywhere. Listen to the voices of Jonas Kauffmann or Juan Diego Florez singing O Holy Night by Gounod. Va pensiero should only ever be sung by a chorus. It is not a solo for a crooner.
