I LOVE the way Idina plays Elphaba. She has that intense "scary" look because that is how determined Elphaba is, and because she wants to bring the Wizard to justice so badly. Idina just perfectly captures this in her face, some say it's scary, I say it's art.

What i love about idina menzel is that she is first and foremost an actress, or not first but its alwas there. you know? she never goes out of character for one second. people who were saying her elphaba was scary, thats right. you cant even tell if it is what she is really like or what she is bringing to the role. i LOVE that!

I was on a cruise about a month ago and they did this song and I talked to the girl who sang it and she said that she had to take her shoes off and ground herself before hitting those notes. i believe they did this number first before the announcement of the leading actress in a musical. so you could just imagine her tension. but this tv performance is NOT the basis for her winning the tony. it's done weeks or months before by tony voters. it's just that every nominated musical has to present a number for the awards show.
