Wow! I worked at The Whisky from about 80 until it closed in 82. I'm interested in touching base with others who worked there at that time. I was a sound guy and I made a bunch of bootlegs from the monitor board but since I didn't really like the metal bands (Ratt, Quiet Riot aka DuBrow, Great White aka Dante Fox, etc) I gave all those tapes to a security guy, don't remember his name. I kept all the punk/power-pop band tapes but unfortunately they were destroyed in an accident in about 84 or so.
I remember The Whisky always had this big ugly smug mother fucker with a Dee Dee Ramone haircut at the door. I hated this guy. I wonder where he is now. I'd like to talk to him.
Somebody who likes Chicago and Captain & Tenille! It's true, that's all there was on the radio! NO WONDER punk happened! Hilarious! I was totally unaware this existed! Thank you!
@modjohn i still can't understand why punk was thought of as so "distasteful" back then. sure, if you were a fan of chicago or the captain and tenille, you probably would have a hard time getting into punk. but you'd think that fans of the (early) stones, who, and kinks would have been able to appreciate this kind of music. in retrospect, punk was only about a half step removed from the "mainstream" of hard rock. punk (as rodney points out) is really part of a time-honored rock tradition
@jonbecker03 I think that a lot of people who'd been Kinks/Who/Stones fans eventually started getting into the more musical 60's punk/garage bands like Rodney did, which was another movement that he (& Greg Shaw) spearheaded to a significant degree. I, personally, was never much into 'safety-pin punk' (for lack of a better term), but loved the 60's punk like Pebbles, Nuggets and a ton of other comps. Having said that, I'm sure I missed some cool stuff.
Unbelievable. Thank you for sharing this. I grew up in SoCal and was too young to go those cool late 70s shows at the Whiskey. I never knew this mini-doc existed even though I was pretty keen to what was happening in the scene. Amazing.
I remember the "whisky" from way back in the "sixties" when I went there as a teenage "flower child" ...I had fake ID and got in to see bands like "The Byrds" and "The Doors" there, and even bands like "Question Mark and the Mysterians"..this video is very nostalgic! Thanks for sharing it! Cheers!
Thanx for this...it's great! I love The Quick and used to see them alot back in the day.I would love to see some footage of them which there does'nt seem to be much of!? They need to put out The Quick's "Mondo Deco" album on CD!!
There is a CD of a lot of live and studio material by The Quick....I love it , "The Stones playing a menal institution and interacting with the patients....". That would have been The CRAMPS , BUT , THAT HAD'NT HAPPENED YET. ...I ' D THINK MOST BANDS WOULD CONSIDER $200 A SMALL FORTUNE , TODAY, ESPECIALLY ON A WEEKNIGHT.
Someone alerted me that "The New Wave" piece was posted on YouTube. People I work with can't beleive I was ever that young. I still love the old bands though and, judging from the listed comments, it appears many people still do. I had forgotten what a nice job you did shooting and editing that film.
Hi Andrew, yeah, the interest in this caught me by surprise...and WE wound up capturing a moment of pure Americana (with a little help from the UK of course)...good to hear from you!
wow ..the cob webs are coming off the memory cells (whats left of them .)anyway I can tell you since I worked at the whisky then ,77-81 , we had to walk joan home that night and she only lived across the street ! we had to promise her a burrito from the gas station across the street ! oh yeah , I remember it well !
damn i do remember kwest it played everything from rock to new wave aka punk,i was only ten couldnt go,started going to the punk rock in 79,damn those were the years i remember most days of my wasted youth!!!
I remember Kwest it was an awesome station, alot of my punkrock freinds were at this gig, they were from South Gate,Ca.SGP!damn i was only 10 yrs old,got into the germs in 79.
omg. I thought I've seen everything I could possibly track down (video that is) from my early days in the mid 80's up until me joining myspace a few months ago....but NO....here's this piece of fucking history!!!!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this! You have made my day. Just seeing Darby not being the center of attn is priceless...lol.....

I did too. I was probably there with ya. I went to dozens of shows. They were my very favorite band. They introduced me to a lot of roots music... remember their version of Eddie Cochran's "Nervous Break Down"? They were a perfect band.
I don't remember it as a Kim Fowley night although he produced The Quick...whose album I have a copy of. We certainly would have interviewed him if he had been present!
whoooo, hoooooo... that's me at 3:46 and again at 7:12 playing guitar with The Zippers. I'm to the right as you face the stage.... "hey ya ma, I'm fuckin' immortal"
Hey I think I saw you at the New Wave '79 show at the Palladium, Aug. 1979 with Cats, Naughty Sweeties, 20/20...Alot of slam dancing, no seats just punkers running around...Was that you?
You're right, she was adorable in the intro...but as I mentioned before, her interview was incoherent... as of this writing I don't know if the out takes from this mini-documentary still exist!!

Thanks for the comment. By the way, the interviewer was also a fiercly knowledgeable DJ from Long Beach's KNAC 105.5 FM in it's "free-form rock" days who went on to KWST on Sunset. I believe they used a bit of Rodney's interview in "Mayor of Sunset Strip" which came out one or two years ago.
He was right about DEVO.
