From what I here, the three Orca pods that reside near the San Juans are very playful and inquisitive, and regularly approach boats and kayaks. Such amazing creatures, how something can be so huge and gentle, but yet have the power to defend itself from virtually anything in the ocean.
Damn that is one of those things where I'm sure doing it you do that kind of scared laughing lol and after you finish having your heat attack and they are further away you just think about how amazing that was.
Certainly an awesome experience. But having spent considerable time kayaking with dolphins, I can see where the risk here was self-imposed. The animals had no good way to know where the kayakers were. If you want them to avoid you, let them know you're there, by paddling or thumping the hull. Anything less is rude to the animal - and very dangerous.
@MayRiverRat "Anything less is rude to the animal - and very dangerous." Do you really think those whales just happened to accidentally swim underneath them? The whales are highly sensitive to their environments and could detect those kayaks from a very long way away. They probably came by just to check things out.
I would totally jump off the rig no matter how cold the water was, swim with the killer whales...thats my dream since childhood...Man I have some Ennio Morricone songs from Orca on the background and I get goosebumps...I am so envious! I hardly cant wait to be in Alaska end of the year!
Wow! I would've been nervous simply because a completely wild animal got that close given the size of the kayaks, even if they are normally gentle creatures. Still, that would be the experience of a lifetime for me. I'd be living a dream! You're so lucky!
AMAZING. THIS MAJESTIC ANIMALS/ MAMMALS ARE TRULY DIVINE :)

@PrinceCharming25 "I would totally jump off the rig no matter how cold the water was, swim with the killer whales..."
...Just like that guy who stayed in sea world after closing and jumped in the tank? With a 'trained' orca that's familiar with people?
...
