Maybe Royce had jet lag? IMHO Royce wins mostly from a pshychological advantage in that he trains in a sparring system, not an MA. When someone challenges you like that, like BJJ vs SOME ART, the SOME ART has a lot to lose and that's a lot of pressure to be put under. It's hard having to pull back punches and instinct for the sake of rules, and end up spending more time thinking about what you CAN'T do than fighting.

Sakuraba broke something in Royce's lead leg with those kicks (could've been something in his ankle- you get the idea I'm sure), Royce had failed consistently for 6 rounds to do anything but have the pace and setting of the fight dictated by Sakuraba, and could no longer realistically expect anything short of an act of god to allow him to win would be my guess.

One of the greatest open matches ever. Both parties fought with their hearts and Royce did the right thing at the end, he was respectful and swallowed his pride. Helio even shook the hand of Sakuraba! I love this sport.

why wouldn't he shake sakuraba's hand out of curiosity? Sakuraba had just beaten Royce in a fight that used a set of rules dictated by the Gracies to favor what they perceived to be Royce's advantages. And not just beaten, but defeated without ever really looking like he was in trouble. All of the nonsense about Royler not really having lost was shown to be worth it's weight in gold, I'd say the least I'd expect from a dude who's supposed to be a class act is a handshake.
