  • MEEthane

  • what are those shrimp like creatures?

  • @stevenydc

The creatures at 2:40 are shrimp.

  • you people are all intelligent I see ,but our higher power created the ozone layer to destroy what ever may come through and harm us and i am sure our higher power thought about what may come from the planet aswell I mean think about it really ,IF YOU COULD BUILD THIS PLANET AND YOU COULD BE SO PRECISE THAT YOU COULD ALLIGN A GALAXY OUR MILKYWAY SO THAT LIFE MAY INHABIT A PLANET OR TWO ,YOU DON'T THINK YOU WOULD THINK ABOUT SHIT THAT MAY HARM AN INTIRE CIVILIZED RACE WE ARE NOT THE DINOSAURS

  • Awesome video, but..

    1) The fossil story of hydrocarbon origins is undermined by (i) the abundance of methane oxidizing bacteria/archaea on Earth, and (ii) the abundance of abiotic hydrocarbons on Titan.

    2) plants grow 2-3 times faster if CO2 is elevated to 1500ppm, because plants are preadapted for optimal conditions. Let's not worry about CO2.

    3) The creatures at 1:14 seconds crudely resembling a school of baby fish grazing on methane hydrates -- are they embryonic tube worms?

  • A possible energy source, or a possible death sentence. You're talking about releasing more Carbon than goal, oil and gas combined. As if we don't have enough problems with Co2 output in the first place....

  • @Icix1

We are not talking about RELEASING more carbon. In the graph you can see the amount of carbon STORED in the form of methane hydrate which exceeds the values for coal, oil and gas. Using these resources as an energy source increases the CO2 level in the atmosphere, but that’s true for all fossil fuels. Therefore, with respect to CO2 the main goal of course is to use less fossil fuels.

  • @marumTV

But you do realize that methane is an extremely powerful greenhouse gas right? By using it as an energy source you'd heat up the planet far faster and far more extreme than anything C02 could ever do. It also takes longer to break down in the atmosphere. Our future is not with Methane Hydrates. Heard of the Permian mass extinction? Yeah, that's what Methane Hydrates do to the ecosystem.

  • @Icix1

The methane (CH4) stored in these hydrates is the same as in natural gas (e.g. used for cooking). Burning it means: CH4 + 2O2 --> CO2 + 2H2O, the result is CO2 and water. But you are right, releasing CH4 directly into the atmosphere without burning it can be a problem (that's what happens naturally e.g. where you can see the small bubbles (video)), especially, when great amounts are released in a short time. Such a sudden release may have caused the Permian–Triassic extinction event.

  • @Icix1 The diagram in the video shows Methane Hydrates are in greater abundance than Coal, Petroleum, and Natural Gas combined. Methane (CH4) causes ten times the damage as CO2 and once it reaches the surface is unusable except as fuel. It's also a highly efficient unlike Petroleum, producing a 1:1 ratio of CO2 rather than an 8:1 ratio like octane(Gasoline). Also to be noted, plants consume CO2 faster than it's made (see oxygen crisis), the reason that surveys report 80% less CO2 than expected.
