I am an American living in Japan. The legal drinking age is 20 yrs old. I've seen more of my share of 20 yr old Japanese kids drinking, but only a couple who were even tipsy. They have very strict laws here. Playing video games and going to sushi go rounds are just as popular.
Hi, Just wondering why do you feel this rule is "stupid"? Are you under-age and living in the U.S.? My Daughter went to Ireland in the late '90's and she told me in the pubs you had to be at least 18 I believe for beer. So obviously Ireland cares at least.
I am 29. When I used to live overseas, we never get all crazy when we turn 18 or 21 just because we can "drink legally"! (Drinking age is just a guideline) Able to drink alcohol is NOT as a big of deal as the kids in the state makes it!! Almost all the friends I know in the state, once they are turning 21, what did they do?? They ALWAYS go party and drink their face off!! meanwhile my other Asian frinds were like: "Why? can't they find something more fun to do on their b-day?"
In my personal opinion, the more you suppress people of certain things, you just gonna make them want it even more. Why do u think Japan has the lowest DUI related accidents?? Ironically, they sell beers in the vending machine?!? LOL
Next, I didnt look up the stats like you obviously have, But given the facts you presented I would think that Japan has the lowest DUI related accidents not because the kids over there arent drinking but because most of the people take public transportation, walk or ride bikes.
Not to put words in your mouth but I think you are saying that if the U.S. takes away the legal age limit for drinking that the kids over here will abide and not drink!? Excuse me for being abrupt, but that's nonsense.
unless you see children at the age of 13 drunken like nothing ever seen before, you realize that they won't drink that much at their 18th bday cause they have enough of that shit...
the rule exists, but that don't means you won't be able to get drinks...

All the laws in the world won't stop idiots from risking their lives and other people's lives...
I'm glad Japan doesn't have a problem with DUI, though.
