  • Swimming from Alcatraz this weekend...pumped on it. The water is about 56 degrees F, 14 C. Big sharks inside the Bay are uncommon, although there are some friendly little leopard sharks swimming about, as well as several other species specific to the region; the visibility is so awful you'll not see any of them, however. At slack tide, it's a good place to swim, with wind, swell and tide swings, however, later-in-the-day, swims can pose precarious. Know your limits!...Then, push through them.

  • yes what about sharks???

  • I want to do this really badly. What is the average water temp?

  • What about sharks?

  • Oh god! I would never swim open water! LOL fish phobia

  • you start on a boat, so you're not actually swimming from Alcatraz to the mainland. Why not start on the island?

  • It's rocky on the edge of the island and waves crash on the shore. I think it would dangerous start.

  • Check out Team Hydro. We do this ever summer to help find a cure for hydrocephalus! We need your help!
