I'm not sure it started in denmark, but danes have been dancing this as a folk-dance early on.

Interesting you say that... The class we were taking involved a variety of different Scandinavian dances, so i would not be surprise if some of the costumes were not Danish. Nonetheless, we were told that particular dance was Danish! :)
