  • Hurrah! Topsy Turvy is now on NetFlix streaming.

  • a clip lasting less that 2 minutes and rthere still an advert on it - this is absolutely disgraceful

  • Обожаю!

  • With joyous shout.. I declare I love this movie!!!

  • Why do they all have such enormous foreheads!?

Other than that, this is excellence.

  • Just in case anyone might be interested... If you are an Amazon.com Prime customer than you can watch this movie in HD streaming for free anytime. I just hook up my flatscreen to my laptop with an HDMI cable and, voila, instant movie! I watch this and Gosford Park over and over.

  • they should have had a bonus dvd of the full operetta with this cast and vote this comment up if you agree

  • @knight10666 I googled precisely for the chance to see if it has since surfaced. I bought the DVD theday it came out.

  • @cyberjack1021 I'd have loved it if they had done, but I very much doubt whether that would have ever been on the cards. Leigh's films are always made on tight schedules and small budgets. I think they simply couldn't have afforded to do so even if they'd wanted to. But it is a real shame.

  • :46 best partt!!!

  • my school is doing this play and i am Pitti-Sing

  • @kelvin98wink Oh excellent, I was Pitti-Sing 50 years ago! Post some videos please!

  • I get a little giddy when they all let loose on "with joyous shout." I'm such a dork. My grandfather and I loved this movie, every bit of it.

  • The Mikado 2: Katisha & Ko Ko, Her lust for power. This could be a great sequel.

  • THe Mikado himself is mad high.

  • I hate that the DVD didn't include longer takes of some of the songs, like the rest of "A Wand'ring Minstrel, I"; that's the kind of bonus material that belongs on a DVD. Still, I love this movie as a picture of the creative process; it's up there with "Amadeus". My fave scene is Sullivan rehearsing the trio; you can see how much fun they're having.

  • @monkeymouse The Criterion Collection DVD includes the "But if patriotic sentiment is wanted" section of "Wand'ring Minstrel" as part of the Deleted Scenes bonus feature.

  • Beautiful!! I love the music, and also the serious looks of the chorus.

  • If they had used this cast to do the full play ? They would have made more money than the movie.

  • I had the pleaure of seeing the D'oyly Carte Opera Co. in Boston and NYC in 1976 and 1978. I also had met the late John Reed and Kenneth Sandford of the company, and whose names you will see most of the records. In fact I was also lucky to meet the late great Martyn Green on of the foremost comic actors of the D'oyly Carte in the 20th century. It's a damn shame after 110 years a british institution falls under the ax because the goverment would not fund them. It's a lose to us all.

  • I love this operetta and the finale is so upbeat...

  • i think this is one of the only Gilbert and Sullivan's I cant remember watching - curses being cultured to these Operas by age 6 but now not being able to remember them :( I will see it on stage again one day!

  • Shirley Henderson voice is amazing its so regal and with a slight British accent . it quivers let its strong and sharp clean and pure, paired with her facial expression she is mesmerizing

  • Shirley Henderson is amazing such regal sharp and quiver adorable voice paired with her facial expression is breath taking

  • I fricken love it

  • I had the great pleasure to see The D'oyle carte Opera Company on its last ever tour of Manchester UK at the Opera House. Brigitte D'oyle Carte had to disband the Company within a matter of Months due to withdrawl of cultural funding....What a pity these were beautifully done productions and as a young man spent 6 weeks pay to see every production sheduled for the Manchester Tour, Thank You so much

  • I'd love to see a whole production with this cast!

  • Just superb!

  • This is just so good, I am awaiting a friend transferring my video of Topsy-Turvy to DVD. If anyone has not seen this film, I strongly recommend it.

  • Last night I saw the current production of THE MIKADO at Sydney Opera House with the brilliant Anthony Warlow as 'Ko'Ko' and featuring Taryn Fiebig as 'Yum-Yum'. Warwick Fyfe was hilarious as 'Pooh-Bah' and Stephen Smith was excellent as 'Nanki-Poo'. I only wish there was a video of this production. Anthony Warlow (who starred in the long Australian run of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) . His vocal mimicing of a drowning bird in 'Tit-Willow' caused gales of laughter to the packed Opera theatre.

  • i am so jealous....i have exams and cannot go see it....sob sob

  • Ahh, The Mikado is such a great piece of work. I'm going to be playing the title role in a few months.

Though I do prefer the Act I finale to the Act II finale.

  • my history teacher was in this =| Lmao

  • What role and what scene is your teacher in? Just curious.

  • nooooooooooooo waaay!?!! :O:O

  • Hey, Cocksucker. Just read....no, that's wrong....just deciphered this deeply offensive comment - it's English, but not as we know it. What kind of fucking moron watches videos he clearly despises? Shouldn't you stick to Biggie and Tupac, and whatever other worthless, dead Rapper scum your uneducated, Nordic, Smurf-fucking ass gets a kick out of?

    You're the fucking retard, cockwipe.

As you might say - 'HaHaHaHa LOOOOL'.

    What a fucking Assclown.

  • There's a beautiful irony, lost on your ignorant ass no doubt, in your inference that I am immature when your use of grammar, spelling ability and formulation of argument bear all the hallmarks of a backward child.

Gilbert and Sullivan don't need me to defend their music, it has endured for over a century and is likely to do so for many more - long after assfucks like you are long forgotten. How about a 'lol' for that one? Or maybe even a ROFL, or a LMFAO?

    Goodnight Cockend.

  • Johnny, I agree with you, I love this play, specially right after they say yum yum...the choir goes up and down with their voices is genius, absolutely genius of a play!

  • daniel....saying that this is bad music, is very very uneducated and ignorant of you. I would not have called you all these names, but Johnny must be a total passionate opera lover...I can empathize with him, get out of this site if you hate it so!

  • ha ha ha....I find your comments hillarious. I agree with you, it is a great play and it speaks for itself, they don't need anyone's negative comments.....cockpipe...that is a new expression for me....you are very funny! did he get mad at you?

  • I weep for the future of my generation.

  • Just got Topsy Turvy from Amazon, over two hours long but loved every single second, couldn't commend it enough. God I'm proud to be an Englishman!

  • i love this opera. Gilbert and Sullivan are brilliant!!

  • This is the period piece movie of all period piece movies!

  • Comment removed

  • I've ordered Topsy Turvy from Amazon to fill in the bits that aren't up in clips ! This must be one of the best endings to any opera.

  • GOD I LOVE THE THEATER...

  • here here

  • Shirley Henderson goes from Hamish Macbeth to Harry Potter to Mikado....she will go far in her acting career so versatile.

  • With joyous shout and ringing cheer inaugurate their new career with joyous shout and ringing cheer inaugurate their new career!

  • Isn't it moving? Mike Leigh has re-created the D'Oyly Carte Company - so like his own company of friends/players - in the 1880s, battling against all the difficulties that performers encounter. The final tracking shot celebrates theatre, film, Gilbert, Sullivan, Mr Leigh and all who contributed to this sadly-fading-from-memory triumph. Theatre is so poignantly ephemeral: Mike Leigh captures an exquisite moment...mind you, Gilbert would have been walking the Embankment, terrified of failure.

  • Beautifully worded and so true, GrenvilleT

  • This film is in my top five favorite. It was brilliant.

  • The bits and pieces of this masterpiece found in the movie Topsy Turvy are the best I have ever seen or heard including the D'olyly Carte Company! What shame that this cast did not put a full production together that could have toured or put out on a DVD. There is nothing out there that could come close!

  • Catchiest song ever

  • brilliant finale!

  • Only the second scene where, in full feature, we can both see and hear "Daughter-in-law Elect" Louise Gold briefly above the other voices, and considerably taller. Why has it taken so long for this former Muppeteer to be heard outside of London. She stole the scene in "Miya Sima"

  • Whether it is the best scene or not, the close of the film has always fascinated me. Shirley Henderson's rendition of "The Sun Whose Rays Are All Ablaze" is positively mesmerizing. I wish someone would post that.

  • I couldn't agree more Shirley Henderson version is 'as good as it gets'

  • I find this finale to be the most inspired finale I've ever experienced. I never see it without it stealing my breath away!

  • best scene in the movie.

    which is saying enough.

  • yes, the choir is beautiful at the end and is creates a sense of transcending happiness.

  • On the Opening Night a critic compared the sensation created by this song in the theatre to bubbling champagne :)
