This song is so hauntingly beautiful. I hear Jerry progressing through his chords and just when I think i'm going to hear a chord that would round the verse out, he plays a completely different chord that is almost disonant, but works even more perfect. Be daring. Take the road, less travelled.
I keep replaying this , sooo good ! Glorious heartfelt singing from Jerry and sweet licks on his guitar. Reminds me of why Deadshows were the most important thing in my life back then . the songs were our own , the lifestyle , the partying , the friends , the trips . miracle tickets , clean doses , highways , lots , sunrises after shows . gotta sleep now ..another show tonight , then off to some other unsuspecting city ..onward and upward .to infinity and beyond
Back in "86 it was an uneasy time in grateful deadland . The shows were getting hit and miss, those of us that did have an "in" to the inner circle knew jerry was actually not really keeping a heavy habit it was really the whole band being burnt out with each other. But right before the summer tour started it was almost cancelled. And then well you know what happened and the 2nd part of the tour as well as the fall tour was cancelled. the 3 shows in oakland in Dec. it was freaking great 2 see him
Poor Jerry... His diabetes was killing him, here... Don't get me wrong, I LUV The Dead, but I'm also a nurse and I know when some one's blood sugar is out of control... Which it clearly is, here...
It must have been a huge surprise to everyone when they rolled this one out. The harmonies sound remarkably good. I watched the other clip of this same performance, and the crowd was going nuts! Understandably so...
I had this on a hand-me-down cassette back in the 89, all but lost now, i am so stoked to now see it and hear it again. Thank you for the post and THANK YOU GRATEFUL DEAD.
I've always loved this particular version. I wouldn't call it "sloppy" at all as one poster said. It rough around the edges, but that's typical. The emotion on this coming from the whole band, led by Jerry, is HIGH. And it is played well enough to support the emotion.
....I was thinking "High Time" ALL DAY on the day of this show, so I was very pleased when We Got It that night. Had a similar premonition the following year at the Spectrum with "The Wheel".
Certainly not the greatest version of "High Time" (gotta go with 11-01-85 Richmond and 6-12-76 Boston for The Goods); actually it's kinda sloppy on this evening.....but a pleasure nonetheless.
Thanks so much for posting this. God Bless The Grateful Dead!!!!
It took me awhile to find your good clean recording of this song. It has always been a heartfelt song for me. I cannot express how much hearing this meant to me.
Thanks from a not too old hippy too soon in a nursing home remembering all his friends, mostly gone. It was hard livin', but it's harder dying slow, but you gotta' ride till the Big Man says go. I guess you can be repentent without being sorry for how ya' played it. I'll find out with you all on that other bank of the river. P+L!
@KFrindik But, what if there ain't 'another side'...what if all we got is now..thats all we really know...right? Beliefs are..well..beliefs...The 'Big Man'...is another...Belief...right? All you know is that you got You. Right? You sound like you're defeated..and ...Don't be brother...I'm 62..a bonified deadhead..and I made it though..and You can make it to..I am being sincere..and telling you what I see. I believe you are putting your problems on someone else....When in fact they are only you
didn't hear this one played very frequently. i'm sure philly was quite surprised. it sounds great awesome. jerry's vocals and playing is off the charts with emotion.....
It just doesn`t get any better than that to me . Words can`t describe how much I miss Jerry . Philly couple months before He`s Gone was my last show . so to be able to see this whole show from the Old Spectrum is very special . Tears a flowin ....Love & Peace to all my Brothers & Sisters .... Tevan from Toronto

Just 3 moons later when he was in a coma - but he came back, and sang as he walked along he muddy river...
I was so grateful to see him again...
then Brent went away...
now they're standing on the moon, with a lovely view of heaven...
But I would rather be with you
