Property taxes which are run by the states are just as screwed up as the national sales tax. As far as the tax on food, here in Illinois I think we only charge 1% on food items and 6.25% on everything else. One thing to note, when we buy imported items we are essentially paying taxes of foreign countries. At least with a national sales tax, we would pay our own taxes first, giving us a level playing field.
