was probably there...used to go to the Mausoleum to see every Isles/Flyers game back then...sat in the 300s and loved getting in scraps w/ the Flyers fans that bussed down to Long Island...always a war...loved it!
I have a hard time understanding Hoyda, he get's his clock cleaned by Gillies, in decisive fashion, then he fights a guy half his size. If he had any intestinal fortitude, he would have challenged Gillies to ra rematch.
I fully understand that Nystrom was a great fighter. BUT when I watch this particular brawl, YES he was the first to come over the boards, BUT what did he do after? Basically nothing, which isnt like Nystrom.
I understand that some fighters dont have to fight in order to help the team just thier mere presence is enough. But the Islanders got rocked in this one overall.
Anyone have any insight as to why Nystrom didnt take more of a police man role in this one?
One common theme in the Flyer brawls-my man Mel Bridgeman always located an opposing player to beat the piss out of. In this case Hart who had cut him with a slash a few days before this game. Pound for pound one of the toughest ever.
That was a good one. I was actually at that game and I remember how Smitty beat down Kelly like nobody's business. (Smith was the backup goalie) Classic stuff. The Flyers lost the fight and the game.
Hoyda picked a fight with Bossy. Yeah real tough there Dave. Typical Flyer approach. They liked to jump non-fighters. This is how they operated and why they are hated.
To set the record straight, the reason that the Flyers went after Bossy was because Bossy made the mistake of trashing the Flyers in the paper the week before so let's get off this anti-Flyer propaganda. Back then you couldn't hide behind the refs like you can nowadays and you had to be held accountable for what you said. And only an idiot would say something negative about the Flyers back in those bloodbath days when the Flyers terrorized the league.
First off, this is'nt anti-Flyer propaganda. That was the way they always played back then. Flyers did'nt need a quote in the paper to act like goons. What did Dale Rolff of the Rangers say that Schultz beat him up? Again, player on opposing team least likely to fight. Is'nt Flyers and their fans motto; {if you cant beat'em, beat'em} Yea, I remember! So don't make it sound as if Flyers did'nt instigate most of time.
No one is allowed to say anything against the Flyers? Listen up ass-clown. They liked to gang up on people. They were cheap. Clarke was a dirty wus who hid behind his teammmates. There are plenty of you
tube vids showing Schultz, Kelly, Dupont, et al getting their asses kicked. So the idiot is you.
Stop putting words in my mouth--I never said that you couldn't say anything against the Flyers. But those who did paid the price. And several of the North Starts were outspoken against the tactics used by the Bruins in the mid-1970's & the Bruins beat the tar out of them because of it. And its because of your Bruins and the gang tactics they used back in the late 60's, early 70's that set the stage for the Flyers behavior. Glad I could educate little boy.
The Bruins didn't have to resort to gang tactics. Orr was a man and dropped the gloves unlike Clarke. The Bruins had tough players but they were capable of playing hockey too Something that henchmen like head-butting Schultz, Hoyda and Brown weren't very good at. The Flyers behavior was far more offensive. I'm confident that the truly educated hockey fans on here will agree.
If this is the brawl I recall, it all started when gutless Hoyda or Behn Wa Wilson jumped Bossy and it escalated from there. The feed on this video is obviously from Philly where the most biased broadcasting in hockey was found at the time. The real crime of this brawl as I remember was that Mike Bossy actually was tossed for getting beat up by Hoyda or Wilson. What the Philly feed will not show you is that Gillies or Nystrom beat the absolute snot out of Dave Hoyda. Justice did prevail.
I was at this game. Sat next to Isles bench and saw Bobby Ny lead the charge off bench. It was Behn (cant spell his name right}Wilson who was bullying Bossy. Gillies went after Wilson and Hoyda stepped in so Gillies beat the crap out of him just like he did to Schultz in'75. Those Isles never took any crap from those Flyers. Figures that Flyers feed would'nt show those Gillies fights. Of course Fat Gene Hart was biased! He had to be or else Flyers would stop feeding him tastycakes. Haha!
Uh, yeah, we really do not like the Islanders! :)
