The truth is ..

Any reasonably intelligent/ coordinated child can play this music if only they have the desire or willingness to learn.

Labeling them prodigies and geniuses serves only to discourage other children who might not view themselves as such.

@avq5 yes, its true anyone can learn how to play piano. but still, the fact that he essentially didnt need any teaching and the fact that he can play by ear at such a young age makes him a prodigy. i doubt most children even know what a prodigy is let alone care if they are one.

@avq5 I hate to say it, but you are completely wrong. As an individual that has played an instrument for 16 years of my 20 year life there is something that sets apart prodigies. I have played with people who will be better than me no matter how much I practice. I am not saying it's impossible to be great without having that X factor, but there is something that sets kids like this, Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi, etc. apart.

Holy crap!!!!! This kid is a musical genius!!!! He's up there with Mozart and Beethoven! Mozart and Beethoven started planning when they were like 4 or 5 and were musical prodigies. This kid was only 6 years old when he was on the Tonight Show. I think we're gonna have another Mozart on our hands ladies and gentlemen!

Some people are good at something, others are good at other things. As far as we know, this little kid can become a highly famous classical concertpianist, while Emily Bear might be a composer. That's two different things.

this boy is not a piano prodigy. there are many children who can play very well when they are his age. They are extremely talented but not prodigies. Emily bear is a prodigy because she is very good at piano and she was born to play the piano. She has composed over 150 pieces of music and is better-known then him. There is no proof that this boy has composed lots. The entertainer is only grade 3!

I feel sick about "child prodigies", its the most degrading thing ever. Bet this kid spends hours practicing and doesn't even play. My primary school teacher used to say: "there is a time for work and a time for play, and play time is as important if not more than work time" and then we all would go outside. If his parents are from Russia, bet this is their ticket into US. Disgusting.

I agree with you that this kid isn't a "prodigy" but I can say they are both talented. Examples of prodigies in my definition - Midori Goto, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Perlman, Zukerman, du Pre, Leila Josefowicz, Hahn to name a few prodigy heavyweights (when they were kids) and more recently, Nobuyuki Tsujii, Lang Lang (and Mark Yu)
