  • My friend can you review this game again with the current patch, I would like to know how it improved or if they made it worse, I would like to know your opinion if you don't mind replying here. Thanks!

  • @wakkaboom1987 Quick review (because I lost my voice and can't speak very well). Stability if the game is greatly improved. Population and city development are completely revamped for the better. There's more "magic" in the game. Combat (if played out) is also better refined. General AI improvements, although you still have to play on higher difficulties for a challenge. Overall, the changes have been improvements.

  • I can say that FFH2 is better just by watching your review.

  • Ok my review... I wasted $24 on this game. Major issues with updating it let alone playing the game. I would seem heaps of people have an issue where the game crashes on the loading screen.

  • @Luciffrit it*

  • @Luciffrit Oh I actually threw this game in the bin...

  • hmm I installed and patched the game... and it crashes before it even loads.

  • I have one question... Is Tom Hanks doing the commentary? =O

  • Honestly, this game is really fun. If they'd released the finished and polished version with all the crashing problems fixed and all the patches in place, I would have honestly no complaints.

  • The graphics look obsolete.

  • looks cool thx (Like) :)

  • I've been EWoM on patch 1.3 so it may have been better or worse in patches 1.1 and 1.2 but I really hope if there are more patches that they make tech learning much easier until you can make an army that can actually hold it's own against a fricken spider or a wolf. I mean 7 staff wielding guys should be able to beat the living shit out of a couple of wolves. Plus if your main dude is a channeler shouldn't he have enough knowledge to already harness mana nodes or whatever those mana things are?

  • MoM sequel - Make a few more races, make it mutiplayer. Don't make it ridiculously over complicated. Overall stay close to the original MoM, it was the masterpiece, don't go screw it up like so many others have.

  • EWoM is a far cry from Master of Magic which from what I've heard they were trying to make the game similar to. I hope that the owners of the copyrights of MoM will make a sequel and do it right. Pretty much just upgrade the graphics to todays standards. Maybe add a few more songs similar to the original soundtrack something with mid-evil sound perhaps real mid-evil instruments for coziness feel. Make a more logical AI, add quest options for heroes, add tabs for the spellbook.

  • EWoM is just overly complex and progression is too slow. I understand why they made resources so sparse but really it sucks and your beginning armies are pretty much pointless. You need to learn like 7-8 military techs (100+ seasons/turns) before your armies can even ward off just the nearby wandering monsters (wolves/bears/spiders). That's just pathetic, I wish I were just joking too. I took 7 of the second level armies you get after learning two military techs and 2 wolves killed all of them.

  • EWoM - The pace of the game is just too slow, I honestly like some of the ideas they were aiming for but really simple is better. MoM, has no tech tree it's just overlord wizards learning spells nothing too complex. Your people already know the techs per se and you just need time to build the buildings to improve armies, gold and mana incomes and of course new cities. You do have a taxation system in MoM but that's about it when it comes to city progression and economy.

  • I'm already bored with EWoM and I've been persistent I've played several full games and still just don't like the pace. The armies are too weak and progress too slow. The techs take eternity to learn, even if you can get what would seem like a mana crystal node (comparing to MoM) you have to learn the techs to use it which is like a level 4 tech only like 67 seasons, that's 67 turns to learn how to build something you can't afford to start using it and that's if it's within your influence range.

  • I bought and have been playing Elemental: War of Magic for the last 4 days, I just have to say I'm just mad that they weren't able to secure the copyrights to Master of Magic, the game they created so far is just lame. It has a few elements of Master of Magic but is far too different to really be associated with that title. Master of Magic is a much, much, much better game, it definitely had it's problems, bugs, old school graphics, simple AI, but it was a far superior in fun and repeatability.

  • If you're thinking of buying this game, don't.

Just get the now cheap Civ IV and download the Fall Further mod. It's the same premise but much better.

  • Excellent review!

No funny voices or playing around.

Just raw info and intelligent insight.

    Thank you for this.

  • Looks like a Age of Wonders ripoff...

  • @isusmen Personally, I'd have a difficult time coming up with a fantasy-themed strategy game these days that didn't copy elements from other similar games. These days, it's pretty much all been done before.

Even so, you're not far off: Stardock tried unsuccessfully to secure the rights to the "Master of Magic" brand name; Elemental was originally planned as something of a remake. Age of Wonders was yet another spin on the same thing. The similarities you see are actually intentional.

  • @dcalpha007 I wasn't reffering that much to the gameplay, as soon as I saw the plot I was all like *flashback Age of Wonders 2* trololol Age of Wonders ripoff. But it seems like solid, fun game. Good review btw.

  • @dcalpha007 you seem to contradict yourself; i would say "unavoidable" instead of "intentional" and there is not one game yet created that did not have at least one element from another game, what makes any game "original" is HOW it plays it out or adds to it. in fact, that goes for anything "original".

  • @isusmen EWoM is partially a rip off of MoM, the makers of EWoM even stated that they originally wanted to obtain the copy right laws for MoM to make a sequel but Atari are a bunch of wankers so they just wanted to make a similar game to MoM. Age of Wonders really is a rip off of MoM and very likely why microprose didn't pursue a sequel for the masterpiece of MoM. Since EWoM ended up sucking I hope that Atari will get someone to make a sequel for MoM and they better not fuck it up!

  • THIS GAME IS A SHIT!IM NOT GOING TO PLAY THIS CATCRAP !!! ! ! ! O.O

  • It's worth noting that, to a large degree, this review doesn't even apply anymore. With the 1.1 patch--and with a 1.2 patch coming very soon--Elemental is now a different game than it was upon release. I personally think it's a better game, but I had to relearn everything. The single-player campaign is still dull, and the in-game "encyclopedia" is still poorly done and generally uninformative. You'll have to read the forums to really understand how to play the game.

  • You can tell you are reading your review dude... I have to "try" to understand what you're saying instead of just listening normally because your inflection isn't natural. It's tedious listening to your review because everything you say sounds the same.

  • .

thank you for this very well made review.

    i'll be getting it now.

    -.-

  • @Ididsubmititalready I'm not sure I understand your comment. Elemental IS a "4X" game; the 4X meaning "explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate". In fact, the vast majority of 4X games are turn-based strategy games. Perhaps you're confusing the the definition of "4X" with something else? "RTS", perhaps?

  • @dcalpha007 Thank you for this excellent review. Exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Details, some gameplay, and personal insights about it. Confirms my thoughts that I'll want to wait for several major fixes, or possibly the 1st x-pac before picking this up. Thanks again!

  • @dcalpha007

    lol dumbass gets ownt.

  • @dcalpha007 I typed rts in and got this. I have been eyeing it off in the game store though. Might be the first 4x that I'll own. Never really liked the genre when I first started playing games like CIV and Settlers.

Hmm I guess Disciples might fall under this kind of game, I have 2 and 3, though haven't really played them much.

  • To make things clear: This game is horrible bugged and this is not because "some retailers release the game earlier and stardock does not want this" but because stardock has no problem with releasing beta products and fixing it later with addons (which cost you additional money). It is nobodys fault but stardocks that this game is so bugged. Initial release was almost unplayable. As much as I am a fan of 4x: this review is biased.

  • why didnt they just continue with demigod? that was the only game of theirs that i have to admit is good, now they abandon it for a game that isnt even as good as the one with 5 people working on it. honestly, how could they go from an awesome game like demigod to a lame game like this which looks like a waist of time

  • @rubberduckey111 I also wish that they had continued updating Demigod, albeit not at the expense of working on new games. I would have been nice to have a few more playable characters (12 to 16 total) along with a few new arenas, but apparently there was some drama that prevented that from happening. If what I read is true, Stardock gave up on future updates because they got tired of people bitching and moaning about the new content they DID create, so they washed their hands clean of the game.

  • @dcalpha007 actually that is odd, because the game demigod is actually quite balanced as far as the characters go. it really is a team effort in the end but i kinda want to know what updates the complaints were about.

either way, they should not have dropped demigod for this game because it just doesnt look interesting at the least. at least demigod had their mascot (Rook)

i think you went a little easy on this review just cuz it is sounding like a positive review for a game that is not as fun

  • @dcalpha007 Galactic Civilisations 2 is the best of its genre. Demigod nvr did anything for mwe and this game was a huge disappointment... maybe after teh bugs are fixed... bu GC2 is still an amazing game

  • Nice review, However this game is drek, Total drek. Beware!

  • 0:38 LoL Killed by an itsy bitsy spider^^

    Great review btw....

  • @Jackalofdeath No habla Ingles? :)

  • Good review!

I have been playing this for a while, and i think it is a good game despite of the bugs. It has gotten a bit better.. but still there are some strange bugs. The most annoying bug is one that sometimes allow the computer players to go negative on their economy.. and recruit units all the time.

Anyway, the game has tons of potential and will be fun to try in multiplayer.

I think it is okay that they release it a bit unpolished.. and do not go Diablo 3 or jagged Alliance 3 style..

  • This looks so crap.

  • There's no company that beats Stardock where patches and updates are concerned.

They always tlisten to their customers and act on whet they hear.

  • great review:) im excited and also glad the old 4x genre is still strong. getting it from impulse

  • Umm frogboy said this is just book one in the campaign and basically acts as an introduction, that more books will be added for free through patches.

  • Excellent review! I like your style.

  • great review, thanks

  • if it wasn't a bug ridden shitstorm (at v1.06) then it would be worth playing.

and then they'd have to balance the game and implement an AI. right now there's nothing inside resembling one.

  • not that much of a game...like it was said the "Campain" is very very very boring, the movement in the game is very hard (it was too much for them to give you scrolling through the keyboard), battles are repetitive so most of the time you just say oh @#^# lets do auto battle...

the only good point which i like in the game is the city control which is like Civilization games but other than it, it is just dull.

this game is more like 6/10...

  • This is hardly a review - there is very little actual editorial content, ie. judgment. It's mostly a description of what is in the game and how the reviewer was able to win. Which is fine, but not terribly useful for making a purchasing decision. In nearly 11 minutes of video, I don't think the reviewer ever addressed the questions: is it fun? and is it worth buying?

  • @Iantis Skip to 10:22 where he goes to his conclusions. He does give his opinions throughout but sums them all up at the end.

  • Comment removed

  • Great review! Thank you for taking the time to write and present a concise review that is both refreshingly objective and yet has a healthy dose of opinion. We need more reviewers like yourself in the biz instead of the grammar failures that work at IGN.

  • Great review!

One question: You mentioned that the maps aren`t really random as in other games, because there are only a number of seeds. Does this mean randaom seeds for the map itself or just some seeds for the initial starting location? TIA.

  • @Upuauta At this time, an answer to your question is hard to give. Brad Wardell, Stardock CEO, has stated that they are already working on changing the seed system. As I understand it, instead of seeds, there will be randomized "chunks" of land (for lack of a better term) that will work as interlocking, interchangeable puzzle pieces; those pieces can then be put together in almost way to create random shaped landmasses that will provide balanced play.

  • @dcalpha007 Thx, for your answer. I will keep an eye on this promising game.

  • this is actually a very good review ,way better than ign and gamespot.

  • Awesome review, I was in tears after the campaign and incredibly uninteresting tactical combat but will definetly focus on skirmishes some more before making a final decision on whether or not this game was a disappointment. Your speaking voice is very review-suitable

  • That's a very informative fair review, I have been following the game for the past year, and I can't wait to get it with the arrival of my next paycheck. The fact that, it's stardock behind it encourages me even further. They deliver contineous tremendous support for their games long after they have been released, I own both galciv2+expansions and soase+expansions, two superb titles from stardock.

  • great review

  • very disappointed with the release of this game. hopefully stardock will be able to patch it up to something good in about a year or so. I'm going to have to wait till then :/ Right now I guess i will have to look forward to Civ5. I really wanted to like this game. I was really keeping an eye on this game's development with such high hopes. The launch was, unfortunately, a total disaster. This game should NOT have been released in such an unfinished state. My faith in Stardock has been shaken :(

  • Very good review!

    I simply love this game!

its sooo addicting and keeps me coming back for more!

Yes its rough around the edges but its so fun!

Just skip the Campaign and go straight to sanbox/continous mode!

  • way better review than a gamespot review

  • What's weird about this game is that it seems to fly pretty much under the radar. I mean I want to like it, but I would need a lot more information about it. Don't get me wrong, your review of the game is great and fair! But I was wondering why there isn't almost any information about it, or a demo. Even the game's HP is a bit vague. Or is it just me? Thoughts or advice anyone? :-)

  • @BloodDemon293846 As far as not hearing much about the game, consider these factors: it's exclusive to PCs; it's self-published by a small developer; and it's a turn-based-strategy game, which is a genre that just doesn't garner the same attention that flashier games do. There are always exceptions, with the obvious example being the Civ games. Genres also wax and wane in popularity; TBS and hardcore sims were once some of the biggest sellers for PCs, now they are harder to come by.

  • Im new to this 4x games. You mention this game brings nothing new. I was wondering. What other games have heroes and dynasty with a lot of magic?

  • @Devalon The number available titles increases the further you go back. As far as a specific feature such as a Dynasty, I'm drawing a blank. But for turn-based, fantasy themed strategy, the recent King's Bounty series is fun, Dominions 3 and the Age of Wonders games are very good, the earlier Disciples games were good (been hearing bad things about #3, though), and Master of Magic is a classic. Oh, the Heroes of Might & Magic series has been decent. And for sci-fi, Galactic Civilizations 2.

  • @Devalon Also, if you want a good 4X game that isn't fantasy themed, you can't go wrong with Civilization. Civ 4 is excellent and has great expansions, but Civ 5 is right around the corner (2 weeks or so). Tough choice there; Civ 4, being older, is always available at a bargain price. Civ 5 will probably be the full $50 between now and Christmas, and the earliest opportunity for a price break will likely be a Christmas sale through an online retailer, such as Steam.

  • @dcalpha007 I know of civ4. I hated it. Because there was no connection to my civilization like Elemental War of Magic. This game has a character I design myself that I can use in every game. Thanks for the reply. I'm checking the game sout out.

Also I hope the developers or moders find a way for a playable multi-player design.

  • Great, concise review. Thumbs up.

  • Hey great review man! Way better than Gamespot does them, seriously.

  • Thank you for this extremely helpful and thorough review, as well as your reasonable response to the early release problems.

  • wow great review style. subbed!

  • i'm sure Stardock will make this game at the same level as GalCiv and Sins oaSE were, just be patient

  • Very well thought and professional review, actually told me everything I needed to know about the game. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

  • This game seems nice. Play this till civ 5 come. Problem is if it run on my low spec pc.

  • The way i see it is civilization with magic thrown in. Seems like a fun I'll give it a try. Thank for the thorough review. Covered everything. Subbed

  • So many people complaining about bugs and the fact it's unfinished. Have you ever played a 1st release from stardock before? I mean come on they always release their games like this. Gal civ, Gal civ 2, even sins was buggy and unfinished upon their first releases.

The fact remains that they like to release it this way so they can continue tweaking it with proper feedback from their customers.

It worked well with the aforementioned games and it will with this one too.

  • Thank you for this review. Sovereign based strategy was something I've only seen in Age of Wonders. That game is practically ancient, and yet it's still a favorite of mine. I'm glad to see these old school ideas haven't been completely abandoned.

Stardock has created a good foundation to make additions onto the game. Maybe they'll create better storylines later. The AI and city mechanics all functioning properly though. That's essential for this type of game.

  • @musicallie44

Yeah, AoW and AoW:SM were great games! I played in the time of 1994 to 2003 Matser of Magic and AoW then. In EWoM I'm missing known races, detailed landscapes and an atmosphere! Thats the important part of an fantasy game: atmosphere!

There are good ideas, but without MP the game is not so good as MoM! :(

  • @vicbrother Hopefully, multiplayer will turn out to be a great addition to the game. I could be wrong about this, but my understanding is that MP will only feature auto-combat, at least to begin with; tactical combat apparently needs to be tweaked before it can be included in MP. I have no idea how many people are actually interested in MP, because it's going to require a great deal of patience, even with simultaneous moves. You're still looking at games that will last hours and days.

  • @dcalpha007 Only auto combat?? AoW:SM was great with the tactical battles in MP. I fight many times with many people in big AoW-MP-games and it was great to see a fight of other players and chat with the other ones. Ok, the games runs 4 to 6 hours, but that is ok on weekend. It's an 4X-game, not an "RTS"-rush-and-win-without-brain-and-strategy-game ;)

  • The game's pretty much unplayable - for so many reasons.

  • Very positive.

Eeeeexcept its horrible in reality. No manual or tutorial, disgustingly bad performance, broken AI, unfunctional UI, untransparent game mechanics and broken math, missing map generator, and as expected - general lack of SOUL, as is the usual standard for Stardock-developed games. Even blander than GalCiv2, i didnt thought it possible, but there it is...

Overall : pre-alpha, that people are conned into thinking is a release. A constructor instead of a game.
