@b16dragon You could, but the bow itself would end up a lot heavier. It's better to go up to another pipe diameter and keep the bow lighter or use a thicker wall thickness pipe like shedule 80.
@BackyardBowyer i think that will be much more dificult to bend like this horse bow i think its better if you make the bow like this its a lot smoother to shot belive me
@BackyardBowyer i was wondering how mutch it would be to buy that or one of you horse bows because i want to get int archery real badly but i dont have 7000 dollars to buy a bow so i was hoping to buy one of your mabie 5 dollars or how mutch do you want because i want to buy a horse bow and mabie a jig for easy fletching :)
Great video. I just made a pvc bow for the first time and I'm glad that some one posted a vid about how to make the bends of a horse bow. I'm planning on increasing the draw weight by either using a thicker piping or layering pipes for more tension compared to using fiberglass like in Themanscave.
@xACeHeAdx Expect 40-50 pounds depending on how long your pipe ends up after bending (from tip to tip). This equates to about 20 or so pounds as far as arrow speed goes because of poor design. I hope to soon have a video up on how to make more efficient PVC bows with weights from 30-50 pounds and the arrow speed to match.
Hey, I read somewhere that you can bend the PVC pipes using boiling water as well, to avoid burning the PVC... So maybe for beginners it's better to try with steam and boiling water I guess... Also, by puting each side of the pipe in the water you could put pressure on ti to flat it using a rollin pin and make it more effective. Thanks a lot @BackyardBowyer I found this to be a great video tutorial. Sorry about my english, it's not my native tongue
@changdae11 Thanks for watching my video. I'm currently working on a bunch of requested videos, so some good string videos will be up when I've got them done.
@minichinny1 Could be the pipe you are using is brittle or old. Make sure to use schedule 40 or 80. There are thinner-walled pipes for cold-water systems that generally lack the structure needed and will tend to snap or collapse. They will also come out with a very low poundage. Hope this helps.
BackyardBowyer, I sincerely hope that you will soon sell a few of these on Ebay or Amazon. Just put up a small variety for modest prices, and I guarantee that you will have buyers. Better to buy a PVC bow for 10-30 dollars than for 100. Sheesh, I will buy one. This could be a nice way to make easy money for college, or whatever else you want money for.
For you viewers, use butcher paper or something to draw identical sides for your homemade bows, to have the same draw strength for both.
@andreyk37 Thanks for the suggestion! I'm working on more videos so people can make their own, but I might start selling them. I live in Hawaii, so shipping is tough, but I know what you mean about the prices of bows. I might just have to make some take-down bows to save on shipping!
Thanks for the tip for lining up both limbs. I think a lot of people will benefit from that. Uneven limbs seem to be the biggest problems people are having.
You are really talented, you seem to have a natural feel for bow making I'm going to buy your book from amazon and look forward to seeing more of you on Youtube keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.
@samljer Hey, sorry to hear about that. Plumbing pipe can come in either color, white or gray. I find electrical conduit is more forgiving because they put binders in it to make it softer and UV resistant. Regardless of what you used, folding and splintering is always an issue. I'm working on some new videos of making flattened bows, which are much less likely to splinter on you or fold. Thanks for watching my video!
Hey great video, i have always loved the horse bow, and nothing shoots like one, but the price tag has always put me off buy one and my skill as a bow maker only extends to simple survival bows, what advice would you give about marking out a template for the bending, in order to get both limbs even
@JrTerrorist i just finished mine up today and had the same problem. you need to re melt the two out most turns so that the bar that is holding your string is straight. if that was super confusing in words message me and ill send of video of what i mean =)
Wow, that's a really cool design. I like how it's bent in a way that it makes it easier to bend back, so your not just bending a straight piece in half, but rather a curved piece that's made to be bent. I'm going to use this design when I make a bow for my friend. Except I will use padded arrows that I make, and a thicker nylon string that fits perfectly in the arrow. This is definitely the best pvc pipe bow design I've seen so far.

1997cram 1 week ago
@1997cram Your string should be a bit shorter. The string should be under some tension when the bow is strung.

you can bend PVC into shapes by putting hot water in the tube.Would probably take less time than grilling it on a stove,
Anyway, cool idea.Must try!

litedwarf101 6 months ago
@litedwarf101 The gray electrical conduit works fine, in fact it is better for bows like this as it is less likely to break on you.
BackyardBowyer 5 months ago
@BackyardBowyer In canada, at least from where i get my PVC, the opposite is truer.
i used the gray stuff, and its folded in half, or splintered.
same schd 40, 3/4" pvc, just the color is different.

@BackyardBowyer hope they have some power too, i made this bow 3x to the letter, has no penetration
even with tested 50lb draw.
bow doesnt go back to resting fast enough, i would say 50lb draw on PVC is like 25 on a real one.
comparison wise anyway; hope the flat bows flex back to resting quicker.
i litterally bounced an arrow off a pheasant that was 25 yards away yesterday, i died a little inside lol.
