Schnittke's music is so amazing. I'm so glad I found him when I was an angst-ridden teen. It's ashame that most americans don't know his work, let alone real music.
Schnittke wasn't "Soviet Composer" ... he was more like "World Composer" ... maybe even bigger ... it's time to realize that NON OF THOSE GIANTS where "Soviet" ... there's nothing "Soviet" in his or Gubaidulina's music ... as for "Soviet Composers" here's the list of few names > Lenin , Stalin , Putin ... all that Soviet Crap!
schnittke's music changed my life forever, his choir concerto, psalms of repentance, and piano quintet have been the most profound musical experience i've ever had.
I remember going to the American premiere of his second cello concerto with Rostropovich performing and with Seiji Ozawa conducting at Carnegie Hall...
The thrill was that Ozawa and Rostropovich helped Schnittke on stage after the concert (Schnittke was very ill at the time)...
It was a schock to see Schnittke with long white hair (a la Franz Liszt) - he passed away shortly after on my birthday!
@ChalieChaplin No, he was being held on each side by Rostropovich and Ozawa; perhaps he was in a wheelchair before that but he walked (with their help) very slowly...
He looked much older than his age (about 57 at the time)...
thanks for uploading this, im obsesses with this composer and am glad to see a doco on him, even if i dont speak french or russian, so miss some parts. THANKS!!!
