I knew of Keith in 1962 at Henry Wise Wood High School in Calgary..then saw him at a high school reunion years later then again at the Chum 50th in Toronto...way to go Keith.
The Norma Frazier Version is the best and it keeps getting banned from Youtube. Stewart, Crow, even the writer Cat, all of them suck besides Norma's version.
Reguardless of all of the renditions of 'First cut is the deepest', one and only one, Keith Hampshire can and will aways deliver this masterpiece with his rustic & soulful vocals that this lyrics well deserves! Sorry Rod, Cat (thank you even though you wrote it), Linda, Sheryl, give it up, you are no match!
Well we will aways have our favs, mine is Keith and yours is Rod. It was witten by Cat Stevens who first recorded it then it was picked up by Keith and broadcasted to Canada and United States though CKLW 'THE BIG 8' out of Windsor across from Detroit, which was more acustomed to this one. However, Rod is a good artist should have made it #1 in UK and he was 3rd to have recorded it then Linda, then Sheryl. But like I mentioned 'We will aways have our own favs' and it has emotion!!!!
Not bad for a bloke of his years. Great backing also

It was Keith Hampshire's rendition of Cat's song that I first heard on the airwaves...and I have always considered it #1.

Indeed, his version is the best. I remember watching the Keith Hampshire Show on TV. Thank you for posting.

Rod Stewart is the one who put this hit to Number 1 in UK pop chart in the 70's!!!! Keith sings poorly and lack of emotion!

Hi, you should try to hear an original of Keith's song. It has far more power and feeling than this version. It is a Canadian classic.

Keith sounded just as good in 2000 as he did in '73!

His is the definitive version as far as I'm concerned- even today with all the cover versions...
