  • Awesome song from an Awesome Band. I miss the $.99 per gallon gas as it shows at 1:54 of the video. :>) We will miss you REM.

  • REM are so so so underrated! They are simply amazing :D

  • I miss the fear of getting caught...

  • Fuck you REM, really. Only because I was born in the wrong generation i will never have the privilege of seeing you live.

  • @CocoBSM I know how you feel. I'm as gutted as you that they split when they did. You never know, they may reunite in the future, hopefully :)

  • masterpiece! in my Top 5

  • whats the difference between the british version and the normal one?

  • Love this, thank you for uploading!!! x

  • Sorry, REM. I can't. To many damn mosquitoes...

  • MERAVIGLIOSAA...oggi riscoperta grazie a dawson's creek...♥ pure il testo e il videoooo!

  • "These things, they go away"

^Sung directly before the shot of a gas station with prices of 89 and 99 cents at 1:54.

    Coincidence?

    Great song, by the way.

  • One of the most emotional and beautiful songs I have ever heard.

  • Agreed. This song never fails to stir me emotionally

  • 1 of the most underrated and overlooked songs of all time

  • This is my favorite song!

  • According to Chris Martin this is the greatest song ever written.

  • @nbmufc94 My name is Chris Martin. I saw yer comment and I said to myself , "Yea...Pretty much." And I'm also a huge r.e.m. fan. Actually met and talked to M.Stipe at the 40Watt Club in Athens. Just wanted to comment on yer comment....Since I saw my name.

  • This is one of those songs, the ones that makes you cry. Longing for people and places you've never met or been. Thank you REM. You remain in my top 10, always! marthie vd merwe

  • I decided as a young kid, and still stand by this....this is the song I wish to be played at my funeral....this will be my goodbye...

  • Anyone notice how cheap gas was in the video? lol Those were the days!

  • @TIAAVENDEALANTIN These things, they go away,

    Replaced by everyday

  • forever :)

  • A hundred years from now, people will still listen to and adore R.E.M., whereas few will remember and appreciate soulless music like that of the Beatles

  • @sanderwiener ahahahahahhaahahaha brilliant!

  • @sanderwiener What The Fuck are you talkin about?..I agree that a hundred years from now people will still listen to and adore REM but..Your're calling the Beatles souless?..You need your ears unblocked man..Peter Buck and Mike Mills are massive Beatles fans..Peter Buck and Stipe were driving in a car one day when the Beatles song "Tomorrow Never Knows" came on the car stereo..Stipe asked Peter "What's this its great?"..Buck said "its the Beatles of course"

  • @smasherhits Michael Stipe once said that the Beatles are like elevator music. Dunno if that's a good thing or a bad thing.....Just thought I'd throw that out there. ( I like the Beatles)

  • Es tan hermoso el sonido en piano, llevaba como dos semanas con ese sonido de piano en la cabeza sin saber su nombre, hasta que encontré su nombre y grupo <3 me encanta (:

  • R.E.M. Meets George Martin. Mm...

  • jason vorhees needed some night swimming lessons ;P

  • Beautiful Song. R.E.M. Thank you for being the soundtrack to defining moments of my life. Thank you, you will be sorely missed. There will never be another R.E.M.

  • meh....its an ok song

  • I have a belief that if I hear a song at the wrong time in my life I will never like it. It took all my 30 years before I heard this song and I fell in love with it from the first line. I've heard songs when I was a kid and something about it wasn't right, the timing wasn't right in my life. I would have heard that same song years down the road and realize how good it was. It sounds weird, I know, but I honestly think if I would have heard this song today, I would not have liked it then.

  • @diskman01 THIS. You have to grow into some music.

  • for some reason I just discovered this. too young to remember it, but i think my life is changed

  • how I wish it was the longer version! probably the very first thing that brought me straight from being an occasional member of the audience to a filmmaker.

18 years of REM in a heartbeat

  • cool

  • Fav R.E.M tune, so much meaning and his voice is sooooo, good lol :D

  • This song came out during a very confusing time in my life but this song is the glue that helped me be true to myself and my first love!! Since he and I love this song while swimming late nights as young confused teens!! Wow reliving it is pretty cool. Rest in peace Jamie. Always will be my true first love!!!1

  • amazing!!!!

  • You guys don't have any idea of how much jelause i feel for you. I born in 1992 and i couldn't live that magnifict age... i mean, the 80/90's decade i consider the best decade ever. Well,'til I got use of reason (about 94 foward), bands were bands, songs were songs, includes the real meaning of 'em... "it's not like yearsago" quoting what song says... now everything has change and this is the adolescense i'm living, i'm finishing... 00's started so bad, and i hope it ends very soon...

  • @Martinbrufal2 Shame. Please hang on in there. It's who you are not when you lived. Just listen to the music and enjoy it. x

  • I remeber some talking head saying in the mid 90's that the 90's made the 60's look like the 70's. I had alot of fun in the 90's. There was still something then that is gone now and that is innocence. Everyone nowadays is forced to grow up so fast. I miss going to the corner gas station and hitting the right coke button on the pop machine and getting a highlife choking it back and thinking there is no place id rather be right now then here with my friends. Doing what kids do. Having fun!

  • Stripped to ur bare skin, nothing to hide. free from life's grinding wheel. This song brings me back to what I stand for, not what I have become.

  • this song is beautiful. (did anyone else notice that the beginning of the song sounded similar to a bo burnham song? no?)

  • 9 people need to go nightswimming....

  • I'm pining for the moon

And what if there were two - but there will never be two REM's - since 1982 - thanks for the memories and the music

  • this clip feels so human

  • i just love this song...i can't get it out of my head...

  • nice piano melody

  • Masterpiece.... hat's off ppl!

  • Beautiful!

  • one of the most beautiful songs ever. rem 4ever

  • miss you singing this even if it was badly x

  • I have said a dozen times, REM has to be one of the most under rated bands of my lifetime. I dont think they got nearly as much credit as they deserved. There aren't many bands that, no matter what they sing, make you emotional in some way. From elation to beautiful misery. I adore this band.

  • @jackswife17972 your mostly correct , accept for the part about be under rated ..R.E.M is not ...

  • @jackswife17972 I totally agree with you. They are often regarded as: "oh, yes, that band that plays Losing My Religion". No, really :/

  • @tidusN1 i know its pathetic now in this day and age where no one knows them anymore. they didn't just play losing my region .. they redefined rock music and their mark will always be there without them i'd probably be dead now....

  • @leefoster222 I know about them :)) But underrated, yes, I really don't know how bands like Muse, Nirvana and Metallica are SOOO praised and R.E.M. stands somewhere in a shadow.

  • @jackswife17972 Wow how eloquently stated, I couldn't agree more. I remember vividly when I was in high school (1980) and I heard these guys for the first time. I got chills then and now @ 47 years old they still give me chills. Many times I find myself as you say getting very emotional when I listen to their music..........great lyrics; great musicians. I wish I could have seen them in concert one more time before the break up. I guess I'll have wait for a reunion tour.

  • great song from great band

  • one of there best saw them in amsterdam and they started with this i can remember being very stoned and very happy so i will always remember that night and smile when i hear this !! REM !! i gonna miss you !! you will go down as one of the great bands of all time !!

  • Just a terrific, terrific song. I would say probably R.E.M.'s best.

  • i was 21 summer 1994 camping with my family, this song was on. the stars were high in the sky, warm night so we decided to go for a swim, me my father my mother and my cousin Jako... as we swam away in the dark water.. all of a sudden a croc grabs Jako's genitals and snaps them off!!! now his name's Carla!!! augh augh augh augh

  • Please tell me for goodness sake who the nine people are that did not like this song?

  • this is the 21st time I've listened to this song today. obsessed? yep.

  • My favourite ever song by my favourite ever band :)

Thanks guys, for providing the world truly amazing music for the last 31 years...it's a real shame I've only been here for 15 of them , I would have loved to have seen the other 16...:)

  • One of the happiest songs I have ever heard, I was having a bad day until I heard this :)

  • Thank you for American culture!

  • One of my fave songs ever

  • I WAS AT "THE LEUCADIAN BAR"....N. SAN DIEGO COUNTY. I WAS LOADING THE JUKE BOX WHEN SOME CHICK ROLLED UP AND ASKED IF I EVER HEARD THIS SONG? (I JUST FINISHED PLAYIN' AN REM TUNE)...AND "BAM"...SKIPPED IT FORWARD FOR THE X-TRA .50 CENTS AND BY GOD IF IT DIDN'T PLAY NEXT. THIS IS SURREAL. GREAT NIGHT ALL AROUND, AS IT TURNED OUT....JUST 1 BLOCK FROM THE PACIFIC OCEAN!!! I LATER EXPLORED REM, THEY HAVE A TON TO OFFER BESIDES "HEY, WHAT SONG IS IT ON THE RADIO?"!!!

    THANKS FOR POSTING

  • wonderful band, i love their songs, michael stipe 's voice is so sexy enigmatic, brilliant band

  • Gonna miss this band. Can't believe they broke up. But all good things must come to an end and at least they broke up on a high note.

  • not a good version,missing the violins

  • REM we love you. Don't go. Unless you go to Occupy wall st. com.

  • This song it's perfect

    I love REM

  • REM...you'll remain in my soul forever, my children will grow up with your songs in the background... :)

  • When I first heard this song, it took me back to the summer of '89. I was about to turn fourteen and was staying with my dad, who managed an apartment building at the time. My brother and I would go out at night to the pool sometimes and swim. The lyrics took me back there immediately. "September's coming soon/I'm pining for the moon". And I remember leaving my favorite T-shirt on the water's edge, too.

  • "It's not like years ago...These things they go away, replaced by everyday." To me, this song is about losing/missing the "specialness" of being young.

  • This song and the untitled song, track 11, from Green are my 2 most favorite songs from REM.

  • Thirteen years ago I found this track on an old music cassette. The summer of my first kiss, this song became the soundtrack of those fabulous days. Every night, before going to sleep, Rem's piano led me into a different world. Thank you very much Rem for your music.

  • dont worry after a few years they will have a reunion concert....

  • It's not like years ago. Good bye R.E.M. This was one of their best for sure.

  • the song is so ambigious and deep[no pun intended]-it can be taken literally as him thinking back to night swimming in a lake.It could also be seen as a take on the aids epedimic and the nightswimming being a metaphor for sex and the big risks involved. ''I'm not sure all these people understand

    It's not like years ago

    The fear of getting caught

    The recklessness in water''.

  • THANK YOU R.E.M. AND GOODBYE :...(

  • Keep your ads. I won't watch this vid here. Damn... waisted 30 secs of my life telling you this!

  • I remember seeing this song on tv when I was about 10..Now I am 28 and music from this era will always be my favorite.Thank you R.E.M...

  • This song is one of my favorites songs of all time, thanks R.E.M. for this, this reminds me when life was easier and less complicate.

  • this song is truly beautiful.

  • nightswimming in crete with this song constantly in my head. a generation of memories with their tunes. a timeless legacy for all their friends. thank you atheneans. will miss you

  • I was a kid when this was new. Then, I panned it. When I was 25, and I finally came to realize that the old days of school and college were past, it broke my heart. Now I'm 31, and after having failed at taking back a slice of my youth this past summer, it's so very poignant still. Thank you, REM. For everything.

  • I almost wish I had only become a fan recently. So many good records to go and search for! :)

  • I want gas to be 89 cents again. I want a slurpee. I want a girl to swim with. I guess I want in to be 1996 again. I would settle for 1999.

  • i can listen to their albums all day/night long non-stop. thank you and good bye R.E.M.! you guys will be missed! i am from hong kong.

  • This song still gives me good bumps. Diving off the back of a boat, no moon, deepness of the water unknown, this song playing on radio, Felt eternal. Thank you REM for your brave music and being part of the soundtrack of my life.

  • How I remember the summer of 1994 - I was 22 years old, almost done with college, working at a summer camp. On the last day (evening) of camp, before everyone went their separate ways, a few of us sat on a dock drinking beers and smoking a little grass and generally enjoying the evening. It was a beautiful star filled night, then a friend turned this song on his car stereo..I remember floating on my back, looking up a the stars, this song in the background -as if the stars were singing to me

  • @wmchase65 I know how it feels. I was 22 in 94, too, and I had the summer of my life. I used to skinny dip in a huge river by nights, me and some friends, and then sit by the fire, talking till morning. This song is so right.

I managed to have the same circle of friends to this day. :)

  • @wmchase65 That sounds amazing aha

  • @wmchase65 That's probably because of the grass.

  • @wmchase65 gosh, massive bout of nostalgia hit me when i read your comment! miss the 90's :-( such a wonderful decade full of memories i'm sure for many people.

  • @999duhast - no question, the 1990s will go down as the greatest decades ever...I turned 20 in 1991, I am glad I was in my 20s during this era...don't know if the world will ever return to the peace and prosperity achieved during this decade...at least we have our memories, and music!

  • @wmchase65 definitely, well spot on my friend, doesn't matter how much time passes we can always put on our headsets and be transported back to one of the best decades of music. Take care mate, have a nice life :-)

  • @wmchase65 i came here to reminisce that same night. well said brother

  • @wmchase65 you made me spine shiver... even though I was born in May of 1994 I wish was around your age in the 90s...

  • @MyDadIsWhatillNeverB ....now I am 40 years old, and I firmly believe that if I live to be 100 the 1990s will go down as the greatest decade ever. Sure, the 1990s still had its fair share of screwed up things and events, but overall it was a rare era of overall global peace and prosperity which may never be duplicated again...

  • @wmchase65 It was a cool decade agreed, but hardly one of peace, Chechnya, Yugoslavia/Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Iraq, etc etc. All told it was one hell of a bloody decade.

  • @FordPrefect23 Sure, I agree, and no decade is without "problems"..but "all told" I would gladly exchange the 2000s for the 1990s...To me, when those f**ks flew those planes into those towers, the world changed forever...

  • @wmchase65 Almost the same exact thing, man. Summer camp in North Jersey. For a us a boom box cassette player in a clearing on a starry night.

  • @wmchase65. I like this comment-that's something to remember forever. Good night, good company, good grass, good music. Brilliant

  • Did it, loved it and very much love the song which reminds me of it.

  • Goodbye REM...<3 thanks for everything <3

  • R.E.M. has been my companion since my early teens, every album is unique AND a work of art. I think that part of appreciating REM is situational, kind of like describing to someone younger the decade you grew up in. Basically the society REM is describing is the generation before mine, before everyone got in another's business. No cellphones, no internet, much less regulation, much more conservative, skinny dipping with his girl. Nice image.

  • Thanks for the great music, R.E.M

  • R.E.M. helped me get through my teenage years and early 20s. They gave me something wonderful to listen to when most artists were (and many still are) creating rubbish. Needless to say, I'll miss them as a band. That being said, I can completely understand Michael, Peter, and Mike wanting to move on to something else after 32 years. Goodbye, R.E.M. Thank you for the music and best of luck with any future plans you may have.

  • I just told my kids 3 days ago we would go to see them someday. So much for that! Thanks for the great music R.E.M.

  • Thanks for all the great music and memories. You'll be missed. :(

  • Thanks for the music REM!

  • Hasta siempre, R.E.M. y GRACIAS por hacerme tan feliz!!

  • Thanks for 30 years of great songs I will listen to the rest of my life!

  • RIP REM - Your memory will stay with us forever!

  • Beautiful music...the next generation stopped listening. Let's not stop listening to this. Cheers from Iceland.

  • R....E....M you made me. And this was my first song I ever listened to... R.E.M everyone. Lest we forget......R.E.M

  • I am so sad to hear... what a waste. :( :( :(

  • @TheMissyhaven12

A waste? - they have given 30 years and some of modern musics greatest albums. What exactly did you want?

  • @Waltiswicked you are right...

    Maybe 30 more... :(

  • shit, band from my youth..gone ..still thx for great tunes to describe the decades we shared

  • this is the sadest day of the entire decade :(

  • Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night... good night r.e.m.

  • loooooooooooooooooveeeeeeee this song!

  • was i the only 15 year old who liked these guys these days since they are now gone

    sadly R.I.P R.E.M.

  • @sebastiaanmohr i think so. kids these days have no idea what legends these guys are. so good on you.

  • Goodbye, best band in the history of history. You will be remembered in the hearts of everyone.

  • R.E.M., you will be missed by everybody that enjoys phenomenal music. 30+ years of changing the lives of people just with music is what you guys did best.

    R.I.P.

  • My favorite REM song hands down. I am sure going to miss you guys.

  • It was this song that got me interested in R.E.M. It changed my life. Thank you for 31 years of the most amazing music anyone will ever hear.

  • One of my favourite songs by REM -I'm sad to see you go.

  • R.I.P. R.E.M.

  • September's coming soon

    I'm pining for the moon

And what if there were two

Side by side in orbit around the fairest sun?

  • Bill Clinton was EXACTLY CORRECT when he said 'He didn't have sex with that woman.' He was correctly taught by Catholics (Yes, I know he's NOT Catholic.) that "sex is only penis in vagina," not felatio. What he sinfully did with her is called 'improper contact.' SO, Why is it that we can't have the American version of this video?

  • I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky.

  • summer's going fast, nights growing colder.

children growing up, old friends growing older.

  • summer's going fast, nights growing colder.

children growing up, old friends growing older.

  • TOP SONG ..Used to play this song to my pregnant wife, after he was born and we played it, he was in a trance like he remembered it from the womb or something, maybe he did???

  • one of mi fav band

  • last night the temperature was about 100 degrees, so me and a couple freinds snuck out and went skinny dipping in this random persons house whose family went to utah for the week , we snuck in the back gate and went nightswimming while we watched the lightning flash all over the sky, and this was our themesong.

  • R.E.M. + John Paul Johns = greatness, this song is the proof of it.

  • muy bueeeeeeeeeenoooooooooo

  • There was a time that REM was my favourite band, I guess this was the time.

  • dolcissima!!!!!

  • hmm this song was on a movie where a guy died and i cant remember the damn name of it >.< love this song:D

  • One of the best songs ever.

  • You know it's a good video when you can't even see the dislike bar :)

  • wonderful!!!!!!

  • R.E.M SO AMAZING. THIS SONG REMMEND ME GOOD THINGS. LOVE HIM

  • am going nightswimming tonight...always in autumn for some reason?!

  • R.E.M

one of the best there is

  • REM is the greatest band ever.

  • Always liked R.E.M but never really appreciated them as much as I do now. I'm glad I was part of a generation when songs like this filled the air waves and burst out of HMV stores as you walked by......It really was something special. I'm not saying there's no talent around these days, but there aint no magic either...

  • This was not written by any one in REM.Michael S was on PBS and introduced this song as the most beautiful lyrics he had ever heard, And gave credit to the author, not himself. I wish I could recall who that was. Any body know this one?

  • @terminalblue I read from Peter Buck that Michael S. wrote the lyrics; dunno about anything else. Maybe Peter was mistaken, maybe Stipes was talking artistically? Dunno.

  • @terminalblue No, it was written by R.E.M. and it is semi-autobiographical.
