I have a belief that if I hear a song at the wrong time in my life I will never like it. It took all my 30 years before I heard this song and I fell in love with it from the first line. I've heard songs when I was a kid and something about it wasn't right, the timing wasn't right in my life. I would have heard that same song years down the road and realize how good it was. It sounds weird, I know, but I honestly think if I would have heard this song today, I would not have liked it then.
how I wish it was the longer version! probably the very first thing that brought me straight from being an occasional member of the audience to a filmmaker.
This song came out during a very confusing time in my life but this song is the glue that helped me be true to myself and my first love!! Since he and I love this song while swimming late nights as young confused teens!! Wow reliving it is pretty cool. Rest in peace Jamie. Always will be my true first love!!!1
You guys don't have any idea of how much jelause i feel for you. I born in 1992 and i couldn't live that magnifict age... i mean, the 80/90's decade i consider the best decade ever. Well,'til I got use of reason (about 94 foward), bands were bands, songs were songs, includes the real meaning of 'em... "it's not like yearsago" quoting what song says... now everything has change and this is the adolescense i'm living, i'm finishing... 00's started so bad, and i hope it ends very soon...
I remeber some talking head saying in the mid 90's that the 90's made the 60's look like the 70's. I had alot of fun in the 90's. There was still something then that is gone now and that is innocence. Everyone nowadays is forced to grow up so fast. I miss going to the corner gas station and hitting the right coke button on the pop machine and getting a highlife choking it back and thinking there is no place id rather be right now then here with my friends. Doing what kids do. Having fun!
I have said a dozen times, REM has to be one of the most under rated bands of my lifetime. I dont think they got nearly as much credit as they deserved. There aren't many bands that, no matter what they sing, make you emotional in some way. From elation to beautiful misery. I adore this band.

@leefoster222 I know about them :)) But underrated, yes, I really don't know how bands like Muse, Nirvana and Metallica are SOOO praised and R.E.M. stands somewhere in a shadow.

I WAS AT "THE LEUCADIAN BAR"....N. SAN DIEGO COUNTY. I WAS LOADING THE JUKE BOX WHEN SOME CHICK ROLLED UP AND ASKED IF I EVER HEARD THIS SONG? (I JUST FINISHED PLAYIN' AN REM TUNE)...AND "BAM"...SKIPPED IT FORWARD FOR THE X-TRA .50 CENTS AND BY GOD IF IT DIDN'T PLAY NEXT. THIS IS SURREAL. GREAT NIGHT ALL AROUND, AS IT TURNED OUT....JUST 1 BLOCK FROM THE PACIFIC OCEAN!!! I LATER EXPLORED REM, THEY HAVE A TON TO OFFER BESIDES "HEY, WHAT SONG IS IT ON THE RADIO?"!!!
When I first heard this song, it took me back to the summer of '89. I was about to turn fourteen and was staying with my dad, who managed an apartment building at the time. My brother and I would go out at night to the pool sometimes and swim. The lyrics took me back there immediately. "September's coming soon/I'm pining for the moon". And I remember leaving my favorite T-shirt on the water's edge, too.
"It's not like years ago...These things they go away, replaced by everyday." To me, this song is about losing/missing the "specialness" of being young.
Thirteen years ago I found this track on an old music cassette. The summer of my first kiss, this song became the soundtrack of those fabulous days. Every night, before going to sleep, Rem's piano led me into a different world. Thank you very much Rem for your music.
the song is so ambigious and deep[no pun intended]-it can be taken literally as him thinking back to night swimming in a lake.It could also be seen as a take on the aids epedimic and the nightswimming being a metaphor for sex and the big risks involved. ''I'm not sure all these people understand
nightswimming in crete with this song constantly in my head. a generation of memories with their tunes. a timeless legacy for all their friends. thank you atheneans. will miss you
I was a kid when this was new. Then, I panned it. When I was 25, and I finally came to realize that the old days of school and college were past, it broke my heart. Now I'm 31, and after having failed at taking back a slice of my youth this past summer, it's so very poignant still. Thank you, REM. For everything.
This song still gives me good bumps. Diving off the back of a boat, no moon, deepness of the water unknown, this song playing on radio, Felt eternal. Thank you REM for your brave music and being part of the soundtrack of my life.
How I remember the summer of 1994 - I was 22 years old, almost done with college, working at a summer camp. On the last day (evening) of camp, before everyone went their separate ways, a few of us sat on a dock drinking beers and smoking a little grass and generally enjoying the evening. It was a beautiful star filled night, then a friend turned this song on his car stereo..I remember floating on my back, looking up a the stars, this song in the background -as if the stars were singing to me
@wmchase65 I know how it feels. I was 22 in 94, too, and I had the summer of my life. I used to skinny dip in a huge river by nights, me and some friends, and then sit by the fire, talking till morning. This song is so right.
I managed to have the same circle of friends to this day. :)
@wmchase65 gosh, massive bout of nostalgia hit me when i read your comment! miss the 90's :-( such a wonderful decade full of memories i'm sure for many people.
@999duhast - no question, the 1990s will go down as the greatest decades ever...I turned 20 in 1991, I am glad I was in my 20s during this era...don't know if the world will ever return to the peace and prosperity achieved during this decade...at least we have our memories, and music!
@wmchase65 definitely, well spot on my friend, doesn't matter how much time passes we can always put on our headsets and be transported back to one of the best decades of music. Take care mate, have a nice life :-)
@MyDadIsWhatillNeverB ....now I am 40 years old, and I firmly believe that if I live to be 100 the 1990s will go down as the greatest decade ever. Sure, the 1990s still had its fair share of screwed up things and events, but overall it was a rare era of overall global peace and prosperity which may never be duplicated again...
@wmchase65 It was a cool decade agreed, but hardly one of peace, Chechnya, Yugoslavia/Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Iraq, etc etc. All told it was one hell of a bloody decade.
@FordPrefect23 Sure, I agree, and no decade is without "problems"..but "all told" I would gladly exchange the 2000s for the 1990s...To me, when those f**ks flew those planes into those towers, the world changed forever...
R.E.M. has been my companion since my early teens, every album is unique AND a work of art. I think that part of appreciating REM is situational, kind of like describing to someone younger the decade you grew up in. Basically the society REM is describing is the generation before mine, before everyone got in another's business. No cellphones, no internet, much less regulation, much more conservative, skinny dipping with his girl. Nice image.
R.E.M. helped me get through my teenage years and early 20s. They gave me something wonderful to listen to when most artists were (and many still are) creating rubbish. Needless to say, I'll miss them as a band. That being said, I can completely understand Michael, Peter, and Mike wanting to move on to something else after 32 years. Goodbye, R.E.M. Thank you for the music and best of luck with any future plans you may have.
R.E.M., you will be missed by everybody that enjoys phenomenal music. 30+ years of changing the lives of people just with music is what you guys did best.
Bill Clinton was EXACTLY CORRECT when he said 'He didn't have sex with that woman.' He was correctly taught by Catholics (Yes, I know he's NOT Catholic.) that "sex is only penis in vagina," not felatio. What he sinfully did with her is called 'improper contact.' SO, Why is it that we can't have the American version of this video?
TOP SONG ..Used to play this song to my pregnant wife, after he was born and we played it, he was in a trance like he remembered it from the womb or something, maybe he did???
last night the temperature was about 100 degrees, so me and a couple freinds snuck out and went skinny dipping in this random persons house whose family went to utah for the week , we snuck in the back gate and went nightswimming while we watched the lightning flash all over the sky, and this was our themesong.
Always liked R.E.M but never really appreciated them as much as I do now. I'm glad I was part of a generation when songs like this filled the air waves and burst out of HMV stores as you walked by......It really was something special. I'm not saying there's no talent around these days, but there aint no magic either...
This was not written by any one in REM.Michael S was on PBS and introduced this song as the most beautiful lyrics he had ever heard, And gave credit to the author, not himself. I wish I could recall who that was. Any body know this one?
@terminalblue I read from Peter Buck that Michael S. wrote the lyrics; dunno about anything else. Maybe Peter was mistaken, maybe Stipes was talking artistically? Dunno.
Awesome song from an Awesome Band. I miss the $.99 per gallon gas as it shows at 1:54 of the video. :>) We will miss you REM.

Now I'm 31, and after having failed at taking back a slice of my youth this past summer, it's so very poignant still. Thank you, REM. For everything.

I want gas to be 89 cents again. I want a slurpee. I want a girl to swim with. I guess I want in to be 1996 again. I would settle for 1999.

It was a beautiful star filled night, then a friend turned this song on his car stereo..I remember floating on my back, looking up a the stars, this song in the background -as if the stars were singing to me
wmchase65 4 months ago 178
@wmchase65 I know how it feels. I was 22 in 94, too, and I had the summer of my life. I used to skinny dip in a huge river by nights, me and some friends, and then sit by the fire, talking till morning. This song is so right.
I managed to have the same circle of friends to this day. :)

@wmchase65 gosh, massive bout of nostalgia hit me when i read your comment! miss the 90's :-( such a wonderful decade full of memories i'm sure for many people.
999duhast 3 months ago
@999duhast - no question, the 1990s will go down as the greatest decades ever...I turned 20 in 1991, I am glad I was in my 20s during this era...don't know if the world will ever return to the peace and prosperity achieved during this decade...at least we have our memories, and music!
wmchase65 3 months ago
@wmchase65 definitely, well spot on my friend, doesn't matter how much time passes we can always put on our headsets and be transported back to one of the best decades of music. Take care mate, have a nice life :-)

@wmchase65 you made me spine shiver... even though I was born in May of 1994 I wish was around your age in the 90s...
MyDadIsWhatillNeverB 3 months ago
@MyDadIsWhatillNeverB ....now I am 40 years old, and I firmly believe that if I live to be 100 the 1990s will go down as the greatest decade ever. Sure, the 1990s still had its fair share of screwed up things and events, but overall it was a rare era of overall global peace and prosperity which may never be duplicated again...
wmchase65 2 months ago
@wmchase65 It was a cool decade agreed, but hardly one of peace, Chechnya, Yugoslavia/Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Iraq, etc etc. All told it was one hell of a bloody decade.
FordPrefect23 2 months ago
@FordPrefect23 Sure, I agree, and no decade is without "problems"..but "all told" I would gladly exchange the 2000s for the 1990s...To me, when those f**ks flew those planes into those towers, the world changed forever...

@wmchase65 Almost the same exact thing, man. Summer camp in North Jersey. For a us a boom box cassette player in a clearing on a starry night.

R.E.M. has been my companion since my early teens, every album is unique AND a work of art. I think that part of appreciating REM is situational, kind of like describing to someone younger the decade you grew up in. Basically the society REM is describing is the generation before mine, before everyone got in another's business. No cellphones, no internet, much less regulation, much more conservative, skinny dipping with his girl. Nice image.

LookingForTheUpsides 4 months ago 4
R.E.M. helped me get through my teenage years and early 20s.

Bill Clinton was EXACTLY CORRECT when he said 'He didn't have sex with that woman.' He was correctly taught by Catholics (Yes, I know he's NOT Catholic.) that "sex is only penis in vagina," not felatio. What he sinfully did with her is called 'improper contact.' SO, Why is it that we can't have the American version of this video?
jamb15767 4 months ago
I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky.

Any body know this one?
terminalblue 5 months ago
@terminalblue I read from Peter Buck that Michael S. wrote the lyrics; dunno about anything else. Maybe Peter was mistaken, maybe Stipes was talking artistically? Dunno.
Kojak7snap 5 months ago
@terminalblue No, it was written by R.E.M. and it is semi-autobiographical.
