My fiance is Romani. Before we met, I was relatively ignorant as to his history, all Romani history in general. The "standard" idea of Roma is as gypsy beggars, thieves and nomads. I am shocked, appalled, disgusted at what I have found. It makes me ill. Our future child(ren) will be raised Romani, yet It is very disheartening to know that there is such prejudice against a culture that most people don't even know truly exists. Perhaps, someday, it will be different for our babies.

There is many Rromani discriminated here in the States. there are colleges that do not allow one to make Rromani studies a major, jobs who do not hire but claim it under the table because of there fear of Rromani. there is States that have the laws on the "books" but not openly enforcing it.
The best part is; even the criminal element (that every race has) did not start off that way; like many minority immigrents they began trying to do honest work, either traditional crafts and arts or employee jobs. I know thousands of families that in the older days they were the first to be fired, before the other minorities, even the African American.

At this time I do not think that the old laws hold. I believe that the status crime statutes of, I think, 2003 (do not quote me on this date) rendered the old anti-Gypsy laws null and void.
However, they were in force and enforced for over a century. They got away with it because they defined us as a lifestyle. They used the word "Gypsy" but, for the most part, outlawed the sort of traditional things we did.

I have been in Romani activism for some time now and know things that keep me awake at night and fuel nightmares. I am close in touch with the news coming out of EU. I also have personally experienced the normal, for us, racism in America... something that most Gadje deny occurs.

I actually have seen some racism toward the gypsy culture recently. I was talking with a co-worker about this subject last week and she went off on gypsies being thieves and shit. I became really angry but didn't lose my cool over it, but I told her that same thing "research what you are talking about before you open your mouth." There was one law that I do not know how they got away with it:
The law stated that unless we paid a hefty fee, we could not describe ourselves as "Gypsies." Basically, we needed a license to be "Gypsy."
These laws varied from State to State and the rigorousness of their enforcement also varied.
I checked my link to a partial list of them, by State, date, and number, and the page is sadly down.

I also questioned this point in it. I tried looking it up to verify that she was correct, but found nothing. I'm not sure where she got that info; I'd like to know. Izabella, would you care to fill us in? I'm just curious. You have my support, this was a really great video. I wasn't aware of this issue before but you sparked an interest in me to learn.

I actually have seen some racism toward the gypsy culture recently. I was talking with a co-worker about this subject last week and she went off on gypsies being thieves and shit. I became really angry but didn't lose my cool over it, but I told her that same thing "research what you are talking about before you open your mouth." I know hatred toward any race is wrong, and no matter what faith you have, there is never room for hate or justifying hate. Thank you for sharing this vid izabella!!

The people in Debate Faith are mostly bitter ex-christian Atheists. They have no respect for history. As a Gnostic, I can attest to the kind of suppression that existed and still existed... especially with smaller groups. Be strong my friend! :)
