I always thought and still do, that the Indian leader knew what Hawkeye said, he knew the whole story being played out, and knew the honor that both Duncan and Hawkeye showed in offering themselves for the girl.
@deanernet each of the main characters, that dies during this sequence. does so--- accepting their fate. Do so with honor. Even the girl that jumps to her death. I also think the Indian leader knew, if he let Hawkeye go, Magua would be taken care of sooner than later. And Magua had his own ideas about honor.
@CKabayan it's a type of tomahawk that many tribes in eastern north and plains have i don't know the name of it yet but all i know it's a type of tomahawk, i've seen many including as decorations for traditional dancers at powwows
@CKabayan The Iroquois basically had two types of war clubs, the ga-je'-wa and ga-ne-u'-ga-o-dus-ha. The first was typically made from a type of ironwood with a large ball at the head. It was about two feet long and the ball was five or six inches in diameter. The second, which means 'deer-horn war club', was often an elaborately carved and painted hardwood club. On the bottom were sharpened deer horn in points of three to four inches.
Wow this is soooo different from the book. it was Cora and Uncas who loved each other!! And Magua stabs Cora in the heart and then Uncas tries and kills him. This ending is pretty good, but would've been better if they kept it the way the book was. Authors know what they are doing!!! :)
@decabba Not true. Magua hesitates to kill Cora at the end of the book, it's one of his henchmen who killed her... Magua then kills that henchman in anger and is then killed himself. In the book he grows to want Cora as his wife.

6:22 that look Alice gives Magua...that LOOK. For a girl who was only a teenager at the time, she managed to capture so much heartbreak in just one look. Absolutely beautiful movie, one of my all time favorites!
@TeHNyboR I couldn't have put it better, absolutely love the movie, Jodie May...well lets just say, I had tears at that end bit. The muic is awesome, can't get enough of it, I keep playing from 6:03 onwards...

One of the greatest scenes in movie making, in my opinion. The scene with Alice, done only through music, not words, is incredibly emotional.
